Do yourself a favor and watch Utopia, world enough time/the Doctor Falls, classic who (a lot of great masters to choose from (deadly Assassin specifically is a great one to look at)), or like the rest of Doctor Who as a whole, because it sounds like you saw this trailer and watched series 12 and that's it. Honestly whoever you like best is your choice, but it's insulting (and a great disservice to yourself) to discredit so many great performances in the role of the Master/Mistress.
@@vullord666 I've seen Utopia many times since it was first broadcast. Eric Roberts was the only crappy master (whom I also saw first time around 25 years ago). What I'm saying is that no-one can really ever come close to Roger no matter how good they are.
@@johndoyle486 That interesting because although I agree that Roger is by a country mile the best Master, the only other one I found even remotely threatening (campness aside) was Eric Roberts. Certainly agree there are flaws in that performance, but he never seems like a lightweight like the rest do - he feels like a real threat. John Simm nearly got there in World Enough and Time as well.
He was a marvelous actor with great range. Apart from the series about Walter Raleigh in the 1950s he never seemed to get the big starring roles he deserved until Dr Who. Damaris Hayman once said only people with absolutely no malice or darkness in them, like Roger, could play a villain so well. Other people hold back for fear of revealing their dark sides.
That's almost right from Damaris, but I think there's more to it. I think people who appreciate the best life has to offer know exactly what they have to lose, and the better you can understand how you can be hurt, the better you can understand how to hurt others.
Fun fact! In real life John Pertwee and Roger Delgado were best friends, apparently his premature death in Turkey in a car accident while shooting a film was a major factor in John Pertwee deciding to call it quits playing Dr. Who.
Saw Roger Delgado in an episode of the Persuaders. He played a card game player but Roger Moores Brett Sinclair won all of the money from him. Another episode that Roger Delgado was in was an episode of Randall and Hobkirk deceased. I think he played a French Hotel manager. Roger Delgado was a fantastic actor on screen and a gentleman off screen. Rest his soul.

Just finished reading Roger's excellent biography by Marcus Harmes. One of the very few people in the, sometimes, egotistical world of the acting profession who was wholly liked and respected by all of his peers. No-one had a bad word to say about Roger Delgado. Although I'll always see Hartnell, Troughton, Pertwee, Baker as the Doctor etc (I'm no fan of the show in its current form, but that's another story) I will always see Delgado as The Master. His shadow looms large over those who took up the mantle subsequently. Mind you I think that Peter Pratts emaciated Master is the most visually chilling and disturbing, and most certainly the creepiest. I used to wonder who may have played the part originally had RD been unavailable at the time. Two actors who were both around at the time sprang to mind. One was a late swarthy Polish born actor, very active in British TV and films for years, called Vladek Sheybal. Always thought that he had the right looks, demeanour and pedigree for the role. The other actor that I considered was a British/American actor called Torin Thatcher. Although mostly acting in USA and by 1970, aged 65, he was on the wind down as far as his acting career was concerned, his dark looks and often mercurial villainous performances within the fantasy, horror genres of the 50's and 60's would have made him an ideal Master I believe. Thatcher died in 1981 and Sheybal in 1991. Neither appeared in Classic Who during their long careers. Notwithstanding, Roger Delgado enhanced the Whoniverse perhaps more than any other actor and I place him at least on a par with the first four Drs and Nicholas Courtney.

I was particularly disappointed in the scripts (thought Capaldi was wasted in the role by that stage) and the direction the show was taking but there are a myriad of reasons I don't watch it now. Perhaps it's best not to go into those in any detail.
