Now let’s pull up the long list of things Americans freely talk about that are considered taboo in South Korean conversations 😂 we are all similar culturally, not better or worse, but just shaped differently.
That being said, I agree with the commenter that some things are just inherently rude, even if they are cultural norms.

    • @MsM-t5n

Culturally, they have a lot of strange taboos. All Americans are not like as he said. Comparing cultures just because of his views, as superficial as they may be, should be respected, not put down. At least we can comment about the government whereas S. Koreans can't. They may ask "did you eat" but look how "thin" the majority of them are. As if we don't have observant mothers or aunts. The older S. Korean men and women, for the most part, usually gain more weight, I said usually because there are exceptions, a few. The S. Koreans do mock fat people. My military relatives traveled and were stationed all over the world (not to one country) and didn't make comparisons. I was told to travel to see how the rest of the world lives. This was before this commentor was even born. No cultural comparison input of any kind. By the way, his mother is still sending him money? Is he a student? TESLs get paid there; even tutors get paid well.

I guess just blurting out what you see about someone is rude because you don’t know what the other person has been through. It’s especially hurtful if the person has been trying to change.
If you are especially close to the person I think it is okay to tell them in private alone rather than commenting publicly.

I agree, this guys comments are idiotic. I mean, there might be something legit about what he has noticed, but the manner in which he explained it is awful. “Don’t be so sensitive” can be used to justify all sorts of harassment. Asian people would not stand for that. If there is something good about commenting on people’s appearance, and if Americans don’t like that, then our American problem is merely a problem of misunderstanding the meaning/motivation of the comment - a meaning which Asian peoples have taught and understood in their cultural past for reasons unknown to us.

There is a sense of community in South/East that doesn’t exist in the West.
So people would be naturally preoccupied about someone they don’t well enough and tell him that he/she looks too skinny, gained weight…It’s out of concern but it’s seen as being rude in The West (or by the western culture fanatics.)
This is why the west has more homeless, people throw their parents in nursing homes but would send them cards because you know they’re not rude.

Look, there is something to be said for both sides of his perspective. It shouldn't be "normal" to casually give your opinion about someone's appearance. However, most of the time, it's accepted as long as it's nice and not off-putting in a perverted way.
If you live in a country that has certain amenities, it's likely that you won't think about whether they have those things in another significantly established part of the world. Most people will assume that something they use regularly would be universal. Not necessarily thinking they're country is better, that's just their experience. His answers could have had a little more perspective. Things are not always black and white.
BTW, no one is being sensitive when being approached with comments about their weight. Even when our mothers say "oh you look like you've gained a few pounds".... that stings a bit, so someone that is an acquaintance or stranger is absolutely overstepping by saying that. It's not your business what someone else's body looks like, let alone you expressing that to them!

In Korean culture, so things that they know with in their self is rude and disrespectful they a willing to accept . Being rude and disrespectful doesn’t change just because ur in a different country. Right is right and wrong is wrong. And that has nothing to do with being sensitive.

The world is a lot bigger than you think, and cultural differences exist, so perhaps try to widen your own measurements of what's socially acceptable. Wokeness is not always needed everywhere, and each society can still naturally progress in its own unique ways.

There are cultures that adopt the strategy that certain things should not be said, and cultures that adopt the strategy that certain things have limited value but are easily talked about.
To people from other countries, it may seem like Koreans place too much importance on appearance. But in fact, in everyday life, a person's appearance often has only the same value as the appearance of food. And what ultimately governs the judgment of a person is his or her personality.

Korea is also changing in certain areas. There was a case where a person was disciplined for telling an obese woman at a meal with co-workers to control her weight and not keep eating. Of course, the remarks that were subject to disciplinary action were of the kind that can be found in pleasant conversations between friends. Anyway, it can be said to be a positive change.
However, this does not mean that the perception of fat women has improved. There was a time when fat but cheerful, good-natured female characters were popular. But now, especially for men, when they think of a fat woman, they often think of an aggressive, always depressed, and unsociable character.
