As they were formed in 1984, they have their 40th anniversary next year, and are one of the most legendary german power metal bands of all time. They shaped at least two generations of european metal fans. Their songs are mostly settled in fantasy worlds like the one from Tolkien

Blind guardian is number one power metal band for me. Probably no one can afford enough time to give a listen to all songs of all bands, but from what i know, they're the best at my taste. 😁

I'm glad that we have the opportunity to taste those various kinds of music and thousands of bands, millions of songs. Every one can find what he likes the most, just imagine the life of people 100 years earlier, they didn't have nothing of that...
What I'm trying to say, is that we have to be thankful for that opportunity and enjoy it, and not to compare whose taste is better. With respect 🤘🤘🤘
I was there! Blind Guardian stole the whole festival! Even blew Iron Maiden out of the water that weekend.

So they finally stopped singing? It's been like a decade since that show ended...
They always steal the festival. One time at Graspop, they played after Kiss in the marquee and lets just say, most people stayed and more came that didnt like Kiss. Needless to say the marquee was too small :), but Guardian sounds so much better inside it. First metal band I discovered on my own and still my favorite. Wont even call them the number one because they are in a league of their own. They transcended number one.
Yes man and I love Maiden, but I agree they crushed it this year... and I think Avantasia headlined the Saturday? Was my favourite of the whole festival
I saw them in Greece last year as they open for Sabaton (headliners) that night. i did not know anything about Blind Guardian i just went there for Sabaton that night, i have to say, Blind Guardian's fans went nuts, one of the most dedicated hardcore fans i saw for a band. I enjoyed Sabatons music and had a blast, however, Blind Guardian stole the show that night.
How´s that even possible?, Blind Guardian opening for Sabaton?... should be the other way around
That's sort of how I discovered Sabaton they were the second opener for Nightwish on their US tour back in 2015 I had no Idea who Sabaton was and walked away a fan
That absolutely must be an intoxicating feeling for a crowd that large to sing back your songs you've made back to you

@@Metzwerg74 Even being in the crowd is incredible when these singalongs happen. I remember bein a part of the crowd screaming "DEATH, DEATH!" in a Metallica concert years back. My soul left me, and i could only scream. As did every other 50000 human there! Amazing when a crowd is in such unison
These are the last two songs at the concerts. Usually the crowd sings for a few more hours. When you are walking over the holy metal fields of Wacken you can still here them. Any time of the year. 🤘
When I went to Wacken in 2003 there was a small group of people walking around singing "Final Countdown" with a marching drum

Blind Guardian has been around since the late 80s - and they're from Germany - so they're playing at their home field, basically w/ Wacken. I believe "The Bard's Song" is from 1992 album, but "Valhalla" is from their 1989 release 'Follow the Blind'.
I love the fact that you hear the crowd actually singing, not just yelling.
Oh wow! I never thought this would happen💀 Blind Guardian is amazing, they started out around mid 80s and they were a bit more thrashy, but still definitely helped develop powermetal as a subgenre! I love the singer Hansi so much because, well, his name is Hansi and he sure looks like one too! One hell of a voice though, they’re really fun so maybe to Mirror Mirror next

I was there in the crowd, singing happily along with everyone else! It's like the ultimative metal hymn. Everyone at Wacken knows the lyrics. And the Valhalla chanting usually goes on for several hours after the concert lol

The audience is chanting "Guardian" in the beginning of the video and he's talking about how "The Bards Song" was legendary quite often already. And it is, it's actually one of the most loved songs they ever published.
Blind Guardian are Headliners at Wacken every few years, hopefully this will stay like that for a lot of years.

In addition to the almost 40 years of Blind Guardian music, Hansi has worked with Arjen Lucassen, in his prog rock/metal opera project Ayreon, several times. One of the songs he is in, and a great intro to Ayreon, is The Day That The World Breaks Down.
Not from Berlin. They are from Krefeld.
Hansi is also the vocallist in two albums for his collaboration "Demons & Wizards" with the guitarist Jon Schaeffer from Iced Earth.

Guardian are legends here in germany, formed back in the early 80s. They are in one category with bands like Grave Digger, Helloween, Accept, Scorpions, Warlock & Doro Pesch when it comes to the german metal scene. Bands of that era sang in english because that was the key to be succesful at that time, that changed in the 90s with bands like Rammstein, Die Krupps, Oomph or Megaherz. By the way, have a look at Doro and their former Band Warlock, she is a legend, too, and is often called "Mama Wacken" as a nickname because she is such a strong supporter of this festival. She got strong connections with bands all over the world, for example: she is one of the few people that was personally so close to Lemmy, she got a bullet with his ashes as a present after his death as his personal last wish.
Smokey wasn't too far away with his explanation of "Valhalla", it is the great hall in Asgard, the city of gods, were the norse gods celebrate and worthy warriors are alloed to join after they died bravely in battle. Speaking of Asgard, I think you'll like the new song Feuerschwanz just released, it is called "Bastard von Asgard" and featuring Fabienne from Eluveitie.

Blind Guardian are the Gods of Power Metall^^. Nearly 40 Years in business now. Very diverse in their Style and very well known over the world. You never heard of them before? let me tell you: you missed something.
Unbelievable band. Very unique. Amazing singer, can sing any genre.
The Bard's Song, especially this live version, gives me goosebumps from my feet all the way up to the top of my head. Same goes for Valhalla obviously. I can only imagine how it must feel for the band, to have a crowd of tens of thousands of people sing your song with you.
Don't think there are many bands where it happens like that either. Iron Maiden, perhaps, but I don't think there's many more besides!

I have to admit I don't know a great deal of Blind Guardian but this was great!
They formed in mids 80's hansi kürsh it's the vocalist their lirics is about overrall fantasy story mostly fantasy literature like Tolkien or the whell of time saga by Robert jordan among others their genre is power speed metal. I hope You guys do more blind guardian is a Legendary band
Fun fact - Bard's song was a piece that urged me to learn to sing and play guitar. I was 17 back then. I went to music school and i would be in a very different place now if not for Blind Guardian. First of all.... I wouldn't have my son. It is incredible how a song can get a ship of your life to take a course into unknown waters, that decades later still have impact. I guess i owe them a beer xD and Virgin Steele honorary mention
Dudes, it s the most epic GERMAN speed metal band...it s not power metal. Their break through was Tales from the twilight world in 1990. the next big thing after this was Images and Words from Dream Theater.

Playing Skyrim made me want to listen to Blind Guardian
If you want more check out banished from sanctuary, battlefield, precious Jerusalem, imaginations from the other side, nightfall in middle earth or really any of their songs. Their vocalist also had a project with Jon from iced earth. If you liked Valhalla you'll probably like Battlefield or Precious Jerusalem, both of them from the album "A Night at the Opera."
Blind Guardian is definitely an extremely popular metal group, they've been around just as long as Iron Maiden and they're basically the Iron Maiden of Germany. Not the exact same genre of metal - more power metal. I have 20 of their albums/b-sides like The Bard's Song that I'm aware of and I'm sure there are more. But yea I'd say their reach in the US is probably not that broad unless you're a metalhead.
Can't forget Somewhere Far Beyond, the album this is from, either.

Blind Guardian is kind of like that one best friend you made in grade school who's still awesome. Just nobody else knows them and they aren't in any of your other friend circles. :) Just awesome musicianship and songwriting with transcendent qualities and no gross masculinity or weird darkness, and great singalong choirs. For a live video you should do "Mirror Mirror" next, or any of the videos from their new album like "American Gods" or "Violent Shadows". Or just listen on your own because BG react videos are not that popular ;). They have amazing songs in thrash/speed/power/epic/whatever sub-genres of metal going all the way back to the 80's.

My favorite album from Blind Guardian is Nightfall In Middle Earth. The entire album is awesome!
Looks like you are pretty new to Blind Guardian... so this is coming from somebody who is a Guardian fan for 30 years+ ... whenever there is a Blind Guardian concert, you can measure how awesome it was by one metric... the amount of words that Hansi sang by himself during the Bards Song versus the amount of words that the audience sang... the less Hansi sang himself, the better the consert! I was there during the GREAT POWER OUTAGE on their DORTMUND RUHR ROCK HALLE concert in 1996 (or 1994, can´t remember exactly).... EPIC!!!!!
UNEXPECTED COMMENT. Even inside the metal circle/genre, this band was underestimated. Fan fact, the producers of the Lord of the rings trilogy asked them to wrote the score for the films (cause of their brilliant work at "Nightfall in Middle-Earth") and those typical germans refused......
I'm pretty sure this "fact" is just a rumour that surfaced from the wet dreams of us Blind Guardian fans when we heard there's a proper LotR film in the making :😀
That is actually far from being true. Hansi always wanted to do this, and when LotR was in pre-production, they sent their stuff to Peter Jackson, but never really got an answer. Which makes sense, even from a fan's perspective, as there still is a difference between writing (legendary) metal songs and scoring a full Hollywood production (compatible with mainstream audiences all over the world)
The "Bard's Song/Valhalla" videos (there are several versions of the same gig from dif. years) are great of course, but you should also check one of the fan-made videos of "And Then There Was Silence" - about the Troyan War and Cassandra :) The song "Under The Ice" from the same album "A Night At The Opera" is also about Cassandra's fate.
NEVER have I EVER heard of these guys but, I believe it's safe AND necessary to say that this shit is BUSSIN'!!! 🤘🏼💙🤘🏼

In terms of timing, from memory, they are at it for at least two decades. Maybe three.
Viking is a verb, it literally translates; "to go pirating"
Blind Guardian were (and are) spearheading the European counter movement to American fantasy metal bands like Rainbow or Manowar. BG stripped away large junks of the masculinity and added more musical virtuoso, a sub genre that became known as Epic or Symphonic Metal, some also call it Power Metal. While the European scene quickly saw various peaks of cheesiness as well, they always stayed true to their recipe and refined it. In fact, I believe that even until now, most band members have (or at least had until recently) regular jobs when they return home.
Their lyrics are rooted in (known and unknown) fantasy tales or sometimes historical topics.
When Blind Guard headlines at Wacken. And they round off with Valhalla, the Chant continues for hours. "Valhalla - Deliverance, Why've you ever forgotten me."
I'm so glad you got around to BG. They are one of my favourite bands and it's good to see other people enjoy it too ❤

Fun watching you discover Blind Guardian - they are amazing and have a range of music, but mostly Power Metal. They have been around for sooooo long and as so famous in their genre.
we were still chanting valhalla when the band was long gone and everyone was walking back to their tents....
The German culture is heavily steeped in Classical Music, most grew up listening to Beethoven, Wagner, Chopin, J S Bach, Schumann etc, you'll notice their brand of Power Metal is epic and bombastic. They also grew up in the beer halls where everyone would sing songs at the tops of their lungs while banging their beer steins on the table. It's no wonder this translates through their music and crowd!
I first heard the Bard's Song probably 25 years ago and it just STUCK! Heard it years later on a party, I could sting it. On a different party someone began it, no instruments, nothing, still could sing along. It's just a great piece of music.
I posted b4 and I'll post it again....travelers through the Wacken area nowadays reporting that it still echoes "Valhalla" 🤘🤘...

Blind Guardian is one of the biggest bands in Germany which is touring internationally. You can say that The Bard Song is their antheme and every Guardian knows the text by his heart. So this video is from the Wacken Festival in Germany 75.000 people.. i would guess, that there are around 30-35.000 of them in front of the stage. :D

I been listening to Blind Guardian for more than 20 years, thank you guys very much for doing this, especially from an artist's perspective.
Personally, I prefer the "older" work by them (Albums "Battalions of Fear" to "Imaginations From The Other Side"); 1988 to 1995. I think the album "Follow The Blind" is a flat out masterpiece.
Songs like "The Martyr", "Banish From Sanctuary", and "Another Holy War" are bad as f***.
Their later work is more "rockish" and less thrashy/chunky.
"Vikings" is a word for people who come by ships and plunder foreign lands, however it was used specifically for the norse people between the years 700-1300

Blind Guardian is probably the 2nd biggest metal band from germany after Rammstein. Very different genre though, they are one of the biggest Bands existing in Power Metal.

Germany Wacken Open Air. A tiny little village of 5.000 polpulation is "conquered" of 75.000 metalmeads for 4 days. A Mecca for all metalfans in Europe Most of the older people go to vacation on those days. To much people in that quiet tiny village.
Was there and beside their show at Loreley St. Goarshausen (they played Nightfall in Middle Earth in it's entire) it was the best Guardian show I went to.

Y'all look like you would like punk hardcore! Listen to my hometown band Sunami. It has a lot of rap elements in it but in a heavy hardcore punk version! Listen to both contempt if cop and weak die first.

just a little correction for you as it is an interest of mine, from what I understand of the concept of the Viking belief of Valhalla, it was not just a place that Vikings would go if they died in battle. it was their version of heaven so first and foremost you had to worship Odin, The Allfather essentially The God of all Gods in Norse mythology. They also had to live an honorable life otherwise they would go to Helheim (Hell) instead and lastly you had to die honorably in battle in order to gain admittance into Valhalla.
