Crazy to see how fast both heaters build up co ppm... sunflower used to be my main overnight heater due to its reliability and relatively smaller footprint. And I have even used both of these heaters at the same time overnight on real cold nights. Scary to think how dangerous it could have been. Good thing we usually don't sleep much and fish for the better part of the night...I guess the pee breaks saved our butts..lol. Thanks for doing this Clayton!! Very good information!! 👍

Ya last season I thought the vents in a quick fish 3 would be good for air for a sunflower. I was wrong. Luckily I woke up to pee as the flame was lifting off the burner due to no oxygen in the space. I felt real funny and couldn't really think lol. Dodged a bullet that nite and approach the whole thing much different now. Keep up the good work and hard fishing brother! Peace from the INW

Many years ago my buddy and I were fishing overnight and drinking way too much whisky. Both passed out. I woke up in a bit of a stupor to see the sunflower burning, but not in the unit. The base of the flames only started about 6” above the top of the unit. Drunk me thought that’s weird, better have a dart. Tried lighting a smoke, and as you mentioned, the lighter wouldn’t work. That’s when I realized what was happening, so I woke up Jonny and opened the door. Almost instantly the flames from the heater disappeared and the heater began normal operation. Scared the snot out of us being so close to having never woke up again.

In our HAZMAT operations and general alarms in which we attend, the TLV (Threshold Limit Value) of CO is 25PPM which is the “Safe/Unsafe” zone of a general 8 hour workday. Anything above 25PPM we will immediately evacuate that area. Key to remember is CO is slightly lighter than air so the CO will be mixed evenly with a fan making the myth of “keeping the monitor low” a complete myth. Think ahead and stay safe 👨‍🚒

My uncle was fishing all day and he thought he was running out of propane bc his sunflower was dying out. He opened the door to his tent to run out and get something and the flower instantly fired back up, bc of lack of oxygen in the tent. Play safe everyone! Also in Winnipeg a couple died from their heater. They weren’t getting the proper gas/oxygen mix which will produce more CO2 than usual.

What I'd love to do is retro fit a small slide in camper specifically for winter camping and just use it as a base camp while its on the truck as i fish all day with the snowmobile. I could litteraly go and fish and travel anywhere and be comfortable sleeping at the same time.

This is an extremely important topic. Thank you for addressing it. What’s I also find terrifying is the breath(second hand smoke) of a smoker can be as high and even higher than 100 PPM of carbon monoxide. Many people smoke in their huts and although it’s not a sustained exposure with smoking it’s scary how potent the co level can be just from smoking.

very interesting stuff, it would be interesting to see any of the other levels inside the tent. maybe if you had a friend that does Hvac work and has a combustion analyzer that can check oxygen levels, see if you could borrow that. as a Hvac person myself it would be really interesting to see. CO while it is dangerous is only part of the story. O2 or deprivation is another part and is equally as dangerous. im not sure exactly of the numbers on it but I know lack of oxygen for a prolonged period of time can lead to brain damage and in sever situations even death.

Carbon monoxide is similar to mercury in the fact that it is extremely difficult for our bodies to process or displace. Once CO binds to the hemoglobin in our blood, it takes up the "slot" that oxygen uses. CO is also 240x more attracted to your blood than regular oxygen. Be safe everyone.

I WILL NEVER USE A SUNFLOWER AGAIN!!!! When my wife and I first got into ice fishing we used one in our 8x8 pop up our first time out . After about 4 hours we both felt dizzy, natious, breathless and began to fall asleep. Recognizing something was wrong and getting close to dark any ways we decided to pack up and hike it off the ice. By the time we got back to the car approximately 1km we both felt much better. It didn't take long to realize that the heater was the cause. We had no hesitation about returning the sunflower and spending the extra money to upgrade to the Buddy. Although the sunflower definitely kicks more heat we have found a good trick is to use a thermal electric fan on top of the Buddy to circulate the heat. Lots of videos on TH-cam on how to set up and worth the extra $100. I have no doubt that if we had fallen asleep I would not be writing this right now. Hi Clayton, great video. As the more who are aware of the dangers, the better. I do want to bring up two points. I think it's important to discern that while the Big buddy does have the low oxygen shut off, the regular buddy does not. This can't be overlooked. Someone may bring their little buddy out, forget their Co detector and think of your video and say to themselves, "it's okay because there's low oxygen shutoff". That would still be a stupid decision as like you said, one shouldn't rely on low oxygen shut off alone but hey, you never know some people right. This bad decision maker may take out their regular Buddy and think they're safe.
That was my main reason for commenting but I have a curiosity as well. I was happy to see that you finally mentioned that both tents had their vents closed. That was a very important factor I was curious about until you did mention that. I am really curious what the experiment would show with vents open though. I will certainly do the experiment myself and by no means expect you to do this for us but I just thought it would have been the next logical test. I always hear people say that they'll leave their heater on but of course keep their vents open. So I wonder if it would have kept the ppm down in both cases. Would the Big Buddy have turned itself off or would the open vents be suffice to maintain proper oxygen levels? Would the sunflower heater have set off the detector or would the open vents be enough to keep the ppm down below that point? Would be very cool to know.
Anyway, I love your videos man. I have a couple overnight trips coming up within the next couple weeks that I'm very excited for. I love watching your videos for ideas during the ice fishing season and I love watching them out of season for the nostalgia they bring while waiting for ice.
    Keep up the great work!
0h I forgot, wood stoves are also a real carbon monoxide risk as well. Just as much as the propane stoves.

I use a big buddy heater and just had a massive fireball blow up in my face a couple days ago from it. Second degree burns on my face and hands. Completely my fault. I using a 20# tank connected to one side that didn't have much lp in it so I brought a few small tanks for when it ran out. I was just about to fall asleep when I started to get cold. I noticed it was going out so I decided to add a small tank to the other side of it. In my sleepy state my stupid self didn't turn it off first. It didn't go on easily and leaked for around 2-3 seconds which was enough to make a large fireball. So just so nobody else does what I did. Make sure you TURN IT OFF before adding or removing lp. I got really lucky. Thankfully my burns even though second degree aren't too bad. Stay safe out there.

Hey Clayton, I have some follow up qeustions on your Big Buddy heater. When you are camping or during long sessions, how often does your heater shut off on you? In this video it cut off after an hour, but I don't think I've ever seen you mention this in any camping video. Do you ever get up multiplke times in the night just to get heat again? What can someone do for ventilation to prevent this with a sunflower or Buddy heater? Great video. Would love to see a follow up with the sunflower and how things worked if you vented the tent a little. Maybe also compare temps in the tent and how they related to the amount of venting.

OSHA standard in the states is 50 ppm for 8 hours. So anything throwing more than that overnight is not safe. Good job showing the detectors that show levels. People need to be aware of what they're exposing themselves to in a shanty.

Yup, those heaters can be quite scary if people do not know what they are doing when they are ice camping! ALWAYS have a carbon monoxide detector when going winter ice camping! Stay safe out there this ice season!

It is worth mentioning, there is a difference between a Carbon Monoxide Detector and "personal" Carbon Monoxide Detector. One is meant for your house the other is meant to be carried on your person. I am not advising either way but it does mention in the instructions of the House Detectors, that they are not meant for Marine applications (I am assuming inside the cabin of the boat) or small rooms. The instructions also mention not for use in less than 4 degrees. Do your own research folks and look out for each other.

I am very sensitive to being in the hut with my Little Buddy burning. If I fish for more than 2 times per week I get a very congested head and pain in my lungs. I am told that it is from the burning of the ethyl mercaptan in the propane which makes SO2 and then converts to sulfuric acid upon contact with water of moist membranes. Are you bothered by this and what is there to be done about it? Like filtering air in the tent.

We have a 20 lb cylinder with a sunflower heater and we use all the time. We dont ice camp but fish for 14 hours sometimes but with the two vents in our eskimo shelter and the fact that I am opening and closing the door often because I pop holes all over there is no chance of co2 poisoning happening but it makes you think.

With the popularity if winter camping seems like Mr. Heater could come up with some sort of direct vent version of a portable heater that could be vented out a door or window of the tent with a flexible pipe or something.

Great video but now you have more experiments to conduct. For instance, it was steamy in there because you were running it on high with no vents open. If you weren’t running it as high with vents open would the ppm get that high? I use my Mr.Heater all the time in my garage on low and never a problem. Granted the garage is bigger and not as sealed as the tent you were using.

I've run my double buddy heater for 12hrs straight in my enclosed trailer while ice camping and I could never get it to register anything above 0ppm. It's not 100% air tight, but I've got to imagine that it is at least similar to what you had set up with that hub shack. Great safety moment for those new to ice fishing/camping. CO2 is the invisible/silent killer.

Great video Clayton! My wife bought me a Forensics Detector CO detector that goes all the way down to the 1 ppm detection. Last year I noticed myself getting a headache and “woozy” at 6.5 ppm. Opened up door a bit and vents and cleared right up. Home CO monitor can help, but highly recommend getting a personal CO detector if you camp out on the ice!

Awesome video buddy. One cannot express enough how important it is to be cautious and be safe when doing overnights. Even when fishing in a tent during the day for a long period of time it is nice to have a CO detector just in case. We just got off the ice from an overnight in -40 with the diesel heater. There’s definite pros and cons. But all said and done. I also trust the buddy heater systems. PS thanks for the shout out.
