    Congrats on 2k! As a Singaporean, it was nice to hear your background in Singapore and SG's JP community/gaming industry! We live in exciting times for the internationalisation of industries invovled in otaku/weeb culture

      Yea the JP community in Singapore is wild. The doctor I go to in my neighborhood apparently went to Singapore for university for her medical degree and she can't speak English much either. Tbh I don't know how she even went to university full time there like that but she graduated so that was pretty cool.
      Bit by bit it does seem like Japan really wants to actually put more foucs on pushing weeb/otaku culture stuff outside of Japan too (took them long enough to realise this...) so for sure it does feel like stuff is slowly getting more international which with all the global creators into anime stuff too that's p cool

      @@overworkedsalaryman Used to work in a JP firm with an SG branch, and some of my JP colleagues actually want to live here long term and send their kids to SG's public schools. In their view, it was for better English exposure, which they claim SG's Japanese school wasn't doing a good job at. Pretty interesting to hear these perspectives from them and their views of raising their kids outside of JP!
      While still an emerging market compared to Northeast Asia, I feel like SG's scene for indie artists/developers is growing at a steady rate, and is also a growing destination in SEA for JP companies/indies to market their stuff to - now that much more Gen Z and Gen Alpha folks are consuming otaku culture compared to my time as a millenial. Excited to see more of your content here as otaku culture evolves further!

      @@lebocharp Yea Singapore's public school system does prolly the best job in asia even till today it does feel like. The Japanese education system and lifestyle locally would prolly cause people to forget most of the english they learn and the Japanese school in Singapore is pretty much modelled almost fully after one in Japan and they interact so little with the rest of the country that it does cause them to not really know much English it seems.
      Though it does feel like the scene there is growing now more at least more so than before. I remember it being that there was barely any indie content there when I was around so that's pretty cool to hear that there's more of that now!

    100% agree on DS, the overall experience is what makes it so special and unforgettable.
    Also agree on Rimworld, it's a standout in its genre/niche because it was executed so well. The comparison to DF is interesting because the Steam port should (eventually) bring it much closer to Rimworld in terms of UX and accessibility, while still offering the incredible depth that Rimworld simply doesn't have. However I still think Rimworld will offer a more cohesive and enjoyable experience overall, which only serves to highlight just how well Rimworld is designed and executed upon.

    • @overworkedsalaryman
      @overworkedsalaryman  5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I do own the DF steam port and I do enjoy it a lot more since playing with a tileset does provide some level of clarity the og didn't have that I enjoy but as you said, Rimworld does feel more cohesive and enjoyable and I feel like like a large part of the success it enjoys is due to how refined the systems are so it isn't too intimidating for newcomers while providing sufficient depth in story telling for people who are fans of the genre.
      With DS it always struck me as having people be more divided on whether or not it's good because of the type of game it is though tbh I'm not sure if that impression I have is true or not but either way I do think it is a very fun experience

    I was surprised to see Koe de Oshigoto get mentioned. That was actually one of my first manga ever, and it really eases the reader in since the main girl also had no idea how anything worked at the start. Will have to try the IM@S game since you mentioned the character building and the first two games. I'm an old Chihaya fan.
    Interesting to hear bits about your story about how you got to where you were. I commute many hours a day so I watched your entire channel this past week (and thus the comment frequency). Good luck on your comiket and inevitable 3k subs video.

      Yea Koe de Oshigoto was a fun read since it does show a lot of the behind the scenes of the VN indsutry especially of how the smaller firms that used to make up the bulk of the industry back then went about work. It felt a lil rushed toward the end but it was a fun read tbh, really wished it went a lot longer than it did.
      Glad you enjoyed the videos so far though, long commutes sound like they can get quite rough but even then good luck and hopefully the videos help make it a lil more entertaining at least. 🙏

    Thank you so much for all the work you put into your videos and for striving to entertain us!
    Personally, the longer Illya keeps going, the less interested I am in it. And not *just* because the fan service is drying up. I think it sort of suffers from the same problem that most Fate and Fate spin-offs have; they end up taking themselves way too seriously for how silly their premise is. It's way more engaging for me when they have fun with the characters then when they lean heavy on the gravitas. That being said, the Case Files of El Malloi anime has to be my favorite of the fate spin-offs. *That and Cooking with the Emiya Family.* Small stories with lower, more personal stakes are harder to find in the Nasu-verse, and I appreciate them more.

    • @overworkedsalaryman
      @overworkedsalaryman  5 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      If anything I'm glad y'all enjoy the videos! Filming outdoors in English always spooks me a little maybe more so than it should so I'm glad it at least pays off!
      With Illya I can see that being the case yea. For me what I find interesting about the later half is more so how the tone has shifted over the years mirroring the shifts in the genre itself over time more so I suppose. Idk if this has anything to do with Type-Moon itself exerting any form of control over the IP though. It was mostly a doujin thing and that's prolly the parts where it was a lot more fun and whimsical intially but it was certainly on the company's radar for quite a while as well so idk if the shift was a part of the original artist's taste or something related to Type-Moon indirectly or otherwise so it'd be cool to know if they ever do mention it.
      But yea it does feel like with how serious the original series was especially the levity of the other series in universe does make the IP feel more interesting since it does as a result have more breadth that people can enjoy

    Thank you taking my questions i really really love vns and eroge as a medium. I have read quite of those and absolutely had a blast some of them were the greatest piece of literature in terms of writing , music and quality such as umineko, subahibi, euphoria, kara no shoujo, 999, saya no uta, white album, utawarerumono these were so so good and their osts i still listen to them such as yoru no himawari, kara no shoujo, blue bird lamentation etc. As for voice actors a particular stood out to me the most because of their after game notes which you get as rewards after completing the game. Nemu's Voice actress from Euphoria told in her after game note that this was her debut role i felt so bad like omg she really had a really hard debut. She also sounded so different in her normal voice which was not as high pitched when she voiced Nemu. As for female artists i knew that because euphoria also had all female team lead i think so it's not surprising. Many mangakas i love are also females even ero ones too.

    • @overworkedsalaryman
      @overworkedsalaryman  5 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I guess for people who are more into the space in general the number of females working in key positions really is less surprising huh 🤔
      I see so many people on the interenet even till today get surprised by it at times that it's hard to gauge how well people know it.
      Though yea so many of the visual novels you mentioned do bring back quite a lot of memories. Saya no Uta especially was like a gateway for me into denpa kei contents in general which is done in a pretty unique style. The fact that they had the game notes for Euphoria like that is pretty cool though. Love when they add the behind the scene thoughts of the devs or seiyuus in so we get some insight into how they went about with their respective titles.

      @@overworkedsalaryman i think not only visual novels but gaming in general declined in Japan atleast console gaming that's why PlayStation moved to America (and got ruined) ahem. As for denpa novels I think companies didn't want delve into them that much maybe because it was a risk factor. Btw one thing I noticed in eroge office title by clock up they actually self inserted the clock up office into game cause in game you can see posters of game euphoria I think it's set in the time period of when euphoria was being developed.

    No way, i wasn't the only one who heard the singaporean accent in your voice heh
    Also i can add to that discussion of workforce gender presence in the eroge creation. One of the examples i can give is, lets say a hypothetical "Beauty isn't skin deep (yuri)" game that the art team had a specific member setup (atleast during the first project i worked on the CGs), it was only 5 people big, 3 males and 2 females (though it would grow exponentially by 2016). Each of the artist had a specific role to work onto their allocated CG pile, one would focus on the atmospheric setting of the novel, thus designing soft pallete CGs with only the minimum of affectionate connection between the characters. One would focus on the 'standout' CGs -as they called it- which focused on having an emotional impact ongoing between the characters, and one (me in this case) to be behind the passionate scenes, which would be more of a softcore or a play-state type of mood. the more experienced female artist of the team, would sit in a call with the others and point out design or anatomical discrepancies, give tips on polishing the art or highlighting certain zones (not always the naughty stuff, sometimes you want focus on the background, as the backdrop is key into how the player perceives the current situation to be, and can be very distracting if not done right. The experienced artist was also the one responsible for the more.. hardcore stuff CGs, and would basically supervise the whole art quality.
    In order to be able to carry out to her standards effectively, each of us were given crash courses on CG poses using 3d modeling tools (the -good- bad old days of maya model keyframing....) and how to draw bodies with semi-realistic proportions and what kind of curvature to pay attention to. the female team member was actually placed in the role of the soft pallete slice of life CGs, as she had a great deal experience in making shoujo doujinshi, and thus was more tailored to subserve the 'ordinary beauty theming". In specific to the male members, they had to learn the external anatomy very thoroughly and to focus on certain angles, like half tilt shots with both characters at a near perpendicular angles, or to never direct the characters face towards the screen directly, but just slightly below, among others (even had like a homework of sorts... imagine having to browse for ecchi fanarts or even official works on the internet every week and learn from how they drew specific scenes using specific angles and why this works to accentuate emotion or sensual stimulus -or just go monke mode and try to brute force it- haha there totally cannot be a job like that.... i totally did not have that surely).
    It does depend on the demands of the team in question, but since our doujin circle had two experienced workers with proper high production eroge portfolio backing us (the experienced artist in this case, and our director), there was a higher than baseline standards, for a doujin work that is this is likely to be standard in bigger companies maybe.
    It might seem off to people in the other adult oriented industries, but they definitely know how to use the artist's viewpoint to the advantage over here -if the team director is not a crippling alcoholic that is.- You can more or less have the artist either use the keen awareness of their own perspective to give the players a similar 'in-the-moment' feeling, or you can have an differently gendered artist use the knowledge of what is alluring to the characters in question, and make that be a focal point of the art. Of course, there is overlap and exchange of this roles, as one grows in experience.
    Yes i know, i seem to sound overtly confident, despite having worked what really amounts to the tutorial stage. But having worked with another doujinshi circle before that one, i can immediately notice how a properly experienced person carries themselves in these matter. it almost seems like a semi-professional audit, the way they tackle and fully take advantage of what could be initially considered limits/lack of regulations in the system.
    (Also yes, the game i mentioned here does exist, but of course not directly in that name, but that was the working name during production. A nice tidbit is that, this is one of the few circles who made a habit of releasing their content in both physical and digital copy, but the digital copy would be altered in pre-production to have a kit unlock feature, so the western releases can have the uncensored version 1without having to make a re-release of an asset update- )
    Anyways, i will shut up now 🤐

    • @overworkedsalaryman
      @overworkedsalaryman  2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      That's interesting though to hear about the way that they got the rest of the team to pick up drawing the female anatomy if anything XD
      But yea in situations like this if anything a mixed team tends to functionally work a lot better as they understand better the anatomy of the gender the target audience is into better though it's always funny how people usually assume that only doods draw lewds for doods etc. That and as you mentioned those who are experienced especially if the tools used are similar across time too since they'd prolly have found work arounds for limitations as well I'd imagine.

      I found those to be pretty fine. They do have their bad points tho for sure so I can get not liking them like how IBO telegraphs deaths further than the Voyager 1 sends phototage back to Earth but overall within their genres I'd say they do stand out in an interesting way.
      Though I could very well be wrong since if it was that good Hoshiai no Sora might've actually gotten a second season instead of having to try to fund it indie.
