Thank you so much for posting this video!! It has helped me so much! I got a stool that was lower, flipped my bench pin so it would be flat instead of sloped, kept my saw blade at a 90 degree angle, and BAM! I actually sawed something beautiful!!! Please keep the tutorials coming!!
This is the best learning channel :-) Love your way of making it completely understandable why/why not to do things a certain way. It does inspire to make something myself with enough confidence to believe even a first attempt on a simple piece might come out acceptable to amatures.

Thank you, Andrew! I can't wait for tomorrow to try out all your tips. I've shied away from curves because it seemed so hard. I really liked that your blade broke once. It's great seeing a teacher run into a problem and then show how to correct and explain why it happened. When the instructor does everything perfectly, I am discouraged because I know it will not go that smoothly for me. Now i know blades break even when a expert is sawing. I will curse less the next time i break a blade. Your calm demeanor has taught me to stress less
This is a long video but every tip he gives is golden! Seeing him encounter a problem--even a broken blade and the need to fit the new blade into the middle of the project--and solve it was great.

What a wonderful instruction on scroll type cutting for a beginner like my self. I've got every single piece of equipment I need for smithing but I'm going through every video and some a few times before I even start. I've been cutting opal for years and tired of sending my stones out to be set. This is a natural progression

Thanks for sharing this with us. Outstanding.
Instead of "waxing" the top of the piece you are cutting, since the shavings will stick to it, wax the underside of the metal. You'll still lubricate and be able to see your lines.
Good tip but I feel that the shavings/lemel would get stuck to the underside and scratch the metal

Great lots of tips for my memory bank. Cheers. Can I ask why do u turn your bench hook back around at an angle, after u finished cutting flat pieces Andrew? Sorry it's prob a basic answer but I'm just starting out trying To learn myself to work with some metals like copper and silver and also coins. I started making wood rings but I want to broaden my horizons so to speak. Love your channel, it's so helpful to me and many others.. Merry Christmas from Ireland, do I hint a Welsh accent there? Or somewhere close?
Andrew, when you say the "teeth will cut in a downward stroke ..'in theory'," does that mean it doesn't always? I find it drags a neutral (doing nothing) on the way up and cuts on the way down- always. When you say, "in theory", does that mean it is not consistent? Or is that an expression? Thans so much for all your amazingly generous and spot on videos!
So if you add another sheet of metal to make two shapes of the same size, would you use the same size saw or would you change it for the doubled metal thickness?
I really, really enjoy your teachings. I wish you would position your camera showing from above of the work so that we can "see" everything you are doing and not just listen to your explanation and then see the final project. Thanks soo much.
I use 3/0 blades but If I use the glueing metal together method for say making earrings do I need a different blade as I would be making my metal temporarily twice as thick

Wouldn't an electric jig saw with a fine blade be good for curved or odd lines?
I understand the need to cut on the waste side but do you have a video explaining exactly how you file down the metal to the sketch line? What I'm interested in is what brand and type of file you use for fine work? My files get clogged continually when filing soft metal- brass, silver etc. so perhaps I'm using the wrong type of file. Any help you may offer will be appreciated.

when you 'drew' the shape on the sheet metal I suspect you used a scribe not a pen is that right?
Yes, I used a scribe as the line is a lot finer but don't mark the meal too deep.
Andrew, I read on one of those jewelry blogs that annealing your metal would make it easier to saw. Does annealing the metal make it any easier for a beginning to learn how to saw or is there no reason to do this? Thanks for all your great videos.
Hi, I would have thought it would make no difference as annealing only affects how the metal bends and moves and has nothing to do with sawing. First thing I have heard about it.
My Tutor also said the metal is easier to pierce when annealed
Annealed metal is easier to saw, try it and you will see for yourself.
even the best can screw up sometimes and you blamed yourself not the tools, very nice to see great stuff, like the videos very informative very helpful, how is the engraving going ?
