I've heard stories of my great-great-great-grandparents traveling the trail in the covered wagon. They brought along two dozen chickens. Most of them were egg layers. They did not want to take up space in the wagon with cages, so they chained each Chicken around its neck, similair to a chain gang. They forced them to march single file all the way from St Louis to santa fe. It was a long miserable walk for the chickens
