I love how much the songs make this musical seem like a feel good coming of age story when you don't know the plot.
this song is so funny and cute until you know what theyre doing lmao
I know this is a fairly older vid but the musical is pretty dark.
First off: in this video, Evan and Jared are forging fake emails between Evan and Connor in an attempt to make it seem like the two were friends despite them not knowing a thing about Connor. ("Re! In! Ven! Tion!" Literally reinventing Connor's personality)
Now the excruciatingly difficult to describe plot, I'll try not to spoil more than what's given in the very beginning:
The title and make plot point stems from our main character, Evan, being assigned(from his therapist) to write letters to himself everyday. It usually starts with "Dear Evan Hansen, today is going to bea good day and here's why..." But it seems Evan disregards this template by going "today is going to be terrible" or something like that.
Evan Hansen is a senior in highschool with severe social anxiety. He has exactly one friend named Jared(the guy making all the kink comments)- who doesn't even seem to consider Evan a friend. Evan gets a cast on his arm(as seen in video) from 'falling' out a tree and Connor signs it under the guise of "Now we can both pretend we have friends"
Connor Murphy is a senior with his own kinds of mental illness- he has anger issues and seems to be addicted to drugs. His family, along with the school, see Connor as some sort of monster. So yeah, his family isn't very supportive either- speaking of family, Evan has a crush on Connor's sister Zoe. Awkward.
Now, Connor, after signing Evan's cast, sees the letter he printed out for the day. It mentions Zoe in that weird crush-like way and it pisses Connor off. He storms off with the letter and we don't see him for awhile.
Next day, Evan is into the office and meets Connor's parents. They inform Evan that Connor committed suicide not too long ago. They pull out EVAN'S letter and have it to him. They're convinced it was a suicide note from Connor to Evan since all the letters Evan writes are usually closed with "sincerely, me"
Evan, obviously struggling sure to the situation and his own anxiety keeps trying to tell them that No, they weren't friends. However, they think he's in denial and further believe that when they see that the only signature on Evan's cast is Connor's. Evan gives into the pressure and just says that they were friends.
No harm done, right?
No, because now they want toinvite Evan over for dinner to try and learn about the guy and Evan has this god awful incapability of saying no. Jared dines the whole situation hilarious because he's an asshole and the whole musical Evan is trying to make people think more positively about Connor and who he was and is trying ridiculously hard to not get caught up in his lies.
It just drives into angst and chaos for there but
