GUYS you have to understand QUINCY JONES was a MUSiCIAN before he ever learned how to be a PRODUCER. Most of the music today in RAP/HIP-HOP (THERE'S A DIFFERENCE) is BEAT MAKING not MUSIC PRODUCTION. Bruh I’ll be 50 in October and just getting back into production after being 20+ years away. I appreciate this one. I felt like my stuff wouldn’t be relevant in today’s music.
Mane. . 48 and needed to hear this. I stopped for a year now just because I let the little stuff get in the way and forgot the most important part I make music which was a get away from stress.
I am 53 started with Kaway SX210 and then DX7 june Akai S950 (which had barely two 80 car lines display and a wheel!) we understand way deeper and appreciate way more!
Well spoken my brother I’m 46 years old from the mpc2000 to fl studio if you have talent what age gata do with t. I just had one of my loops from looperman called traper bellz used by Travis Scott on thank god Utopia Grammy nominated Lp . So I don’t think age should matter
I'll be 40 next year, I'm dating a woman I'm interested in long term and having kids with. My goals and priorities have changed because I know I have a limited time on earth. I still love music and I am making room for other things in my life. Growth and change everyday!
It’s really slept on how helpful it is to just listen to somone who’s in the position you wanna be in ive been listening to your videos at work and they are hella clearing things up about the industry for me especially your video on how important it is to learn engineering I wish more people in the industry did this.
There s a beatmaker here in France, he had his first placement at 40 for one of the biggest rapper in the french rap today who s 24. Then that beatmaker had placement for a lot of artists in a Quick time after his first placement. He started make beats at 30. So the most importanr as a music producer is your music not your age.
For me, I'm 52.. So right now I'm at this R&B Thug sound. And I ask myself if WHEN I get a placement, do I really wanna be in the studio full time with some of these younger artist. I just truly enjoy making music. Its how I clear my mind.
Keep pushin bro this might be the best informative/inspiring video for producers on TH-cam I just turned 40 and youngsters and even females be having negative shit to say about older musicians/producers I always felt that age doesn’t matter if your a true musician there is nothing that can stop the fire from burning In your body it’s clearly therapy 💯
Needed to hear this and I’m only 32 🙌🏾 I’m still on my path but I’ll get there soon! Love this video! I hate when people put age limits on life and especially creativity
Why am I just seeing this? Great video and valuable perspective brother. Creativity has no age limit. To add to that.. There are plenty of successful artists/creators that are just seeing success well over the age of 50. Also, you have 70 year old artists that labels no longer invest in re-inventing themselves, releasing new self-produced albums, getting residency and touring. Being a creator is a lifelong mission. Thanks for sharing this brother..... PS.. I think I missed you by 15 minutes at MixNik, lol.
I used to provide a producer with vocal tracks for use in commercial karaoke collections. That producer used Pro Tools and would send me a stereo file of the rhythm track and it’s BPMs, and a reference track of the original recording. I would have to reproduce all of the original vocals. I used Sonar on my PC and the Digital Performer once I got a Macbook. I simply set up my project with the rhythm tracks BPM and loaded the track onto an empty stereo track. After recording my vocals and preparing the tracks so that their start times matched the rhythm track, I sent the tracks as audio files, commonly called stems by many people today. That system worked just fine for us for years.
Bolo! 41 year old musician here.. brotha thank you for the compassion, thoughtfulness and encouragement in this video. This is a special message that can only come from someone with great heart.
46 years old as of June 2024, yes I use Reason (still). 0 placements but more than 30 years experience in music, former rapper and knowing various LA rappers (known and unknown). Got a whole family, a whole job but still loving to make music for someone...anyone to rap/sing on. Hell, even sync placement will make me happy.
The Alchemist has been making dope beats since the 90’s and look where he is now. Working with Kendrick, Drake, etc as an underground producer and I would argue making even better beats than his work in the 90’s. Could say the same about Premo and many more older producers.
S/0 to Bolo the producer I’m 51 and made tons of beats but samples aren’t cleared however I did get feed back from family and say I’m pretty good but need to sharpen the sound better I never stop until I need to take a break so I can find my method of melodies i do can say this suppose those are over forty -50 or 60 were to do live concerts would they or us OGs want to perform how would the fan base be like for those over their age limit ?
I’m 71 and love writing and producing! I started at 11yrs old! When I stop with music I’m dead. Traveled toured bands, night club house artist. Start recording on a 2track grew up with Prince JellyBean The Time ! Minnesota Funk kid
67 years old, I've been mainly in the Blues/Soul genre, because the studio I worked in for 23+years recorded mostly blues. I wrote songs that were recorded by blues artists like Denise LaSalle, Ann Peebles, Otis Clay, Robert Cray, etc, Never had the pleasure of major " Hits " but I have songs in movies, Sync licenses for TV shows, but that was then. I love the knowledge you are putting out, and the subjects you're touching on. Even though I placed blues songs on artists, I was working for a publishing company, and I was writing Top 40 type R&B, Jazz, Country, etc and turning them in, and they all were being shelved. I didn't have the knowledge to know they had no solid outlets for anything other than the Blues , so much of my work was lost, please touch on something in that realm. I also have gotten record deals to get some retired artists back in the game, but that was then. Today, with streaming and the digital market technology, there is no Music business like there used to be. There is in a sense, but it's a brand new business model, but product still generates revenue, it's just now how to position to be a part of the stream of revenue in a nutshell...Some don't have a clue and think because they run thru Distrokid or whatever they're plugged in, and that's not the case.. I'll stop here, but in closing I'm really enjoying your recent videos you're touching on the areas many younger and older people in music need to focus on, think about, learn, stay away from, and other. Much continued success to you, would love to speak with you at some point, if I get in your area.. Thomas Bingham ( look me up on All music, and I didn't post anything there myself 😊 )
Appreciate this video! I will be 50 in August and I feel like I’m making the best music of my life, and would put beats up against anybody. But I have honestly question myself about this very topic.
NOBODY in ANY OTHER genre says "I'm 40-50 yrs old STIIL makin Rock, Pop, R&B, Soul, Neo Soul, Country, Polka, Bossa Nova, Techno, House music." EXCEPT those in Hip Hop. WE BLACK PEOPLE are tha ONLY ONES that does this to OURSELVES in tha genre that WE created!!!🤬🤬🤬 WHY do WE self inflict AGEISM to OURSELVES in our OWN genre??? Nuff Respect to your vid Bolo. This NEEDED to be heard👊👊
Great video bro! I will be 44 at the end of the month. I have a wife and my kids are in their 20’s. I have a day job going on 22 years and my wife is very supportive. What I learned is things take time. I sound better than I ever did when I first started at 15. All I did and still do is study. Read books, manuals, (remember SCRATCH Magazine) TH-cam, then finally school. I am an artist but I am focused on music production and mixing. Worked with many artists and now working on sync music. I never thought my music would open so many doors. Especially when I got discouraged by so many people throughout the years. That respect is definitely earned through hard work. I feel like every year, God is taking me on another level in my music because I am learning new ways to do things better. I love making music. 💪🏾💯
For Years And Tears In All Genres Of Music Have Had Older Producers Audio Engineers Mastering Engineers It Is Called Being Seasoned And Experienced We Took Years To Learn This Stuff We Just Supposed To Stop Because We Are a Certain Age They Should Want Someone That Know What They Are Doing Good Video Man
This one was right on time and spot on my guy I'm 47 been producing since 15 and have had this conversation several times with all age groups great video we rockin wit you down here in San Antonio TX
Brooooo! Thanks for this! I stopped making music at 29 because I felt I was too old at the time. Got my doctorate, started a family. I’m now 43. In 2020 I bought a Tuff Shed and built a bad ass studio, slowly getting back into music. Even if I get nowhere, my kids now have an in house producer, ready to support their dreams if they choose that route.
I started learning production at 29 and I turned 30 this past June and felt like I started too late because the thought of me in my 30s and approaching 40 scares me a lot and everything is just moving too fast. But music and being creative is something I really enjoy doing.
Best video by far. The biggest problem is older folks following younger folks instead of standing on your truth to provide guidance to the young folks.
I'm 59 and doing sync film/TV music, games NOW, using Studio One. I have used MpC DAW FL Studio Also. After a life of touring, Playing guitar, Doing Sync music works for me and I'm so Interested in the art.
There’s actually an advantage to being older, if you have use the time. I am a formally trained multi-instrumentalist in Los Angeles and I play guitar, bass, keyboards and do drum programming for many “producers” who are half my age. The only reason why they consistently hire me is because I can play in 15 minutes what sometimes takes them all night to figure out. The Hiphop and R&B music of today is basically a very basic version of the music from the past, with added effects, reverse effects and filters. And the beats are the simplest ever. I just programmed 6 beats for a very well known Hiphop artist and it only took me a few hours. Everything is much easier now than it was in the past.
Dear Bolo. One of the brightest things about the globalisation is that I could find you. This video is the best in-depth and overall in one for me from all the stuff I have seen on You Tube for last three years, since I have decided to have more fun from the music. Thanks for the inspiration and positive kick in the butt to move on. Cheers from Poland.
i started in 1988 with radio shack keyboards and wires. i played and learned the sounds and how they sit in the mix. then got professional keyboards like Korg X Korg M1 yamaha DX9 Alesis Mirrage SQ10 Korg Kronos Roland flagship keyboards. started with 4 track cassettes laying tracs one at a time. mixing to not to distort the sounds. then went to DAT then there were sequences keyboards to stand alone Digital recorders to finally to DAW in 2004 thats my history. It comes down to your Ears and if it sounds great. or good to you. You have to live with it the rest of your life. Its born from you and grows along your journey
Bolo you’re under appreciated. Even the way you speak it’s almost as if there is no screen in between those that listen. That’s a talent that doesn’t go unnoticed. Thank you.
Thanks for this video. Gratz on getting the speaking gigs! One myth, or maybe it's a mindset, that I try to dispel among musicians old AND young is that doing music, in whatever way, doesn't have to be aimed at commercial success. Hell, it doesn't even need an AUDIENCE for it to be a valuable thing to do. People who do other artistic things like painting, photography, woodworking, whatever, sure, for some percentage of people who do it, they make some money at it. But for most of the people who paint or do photography, they do it for personal fulfillment. The best music is music that the people who make it feel a connection to and a love for. This includes million-selling records. When I was 10 years old, there was a big hit on top 40 radio with a chorus that included the line "you can't please everyone, so you've got to please yourself." I didn't realize at the time that the guy who wrote and sang it was Rick Nelson, who was part of a multi-generational music family. His mom and dad were Ozzie and Harriet, who before they went into television, were a big band leader and a singer. His sons later formed the pop rock band Nelson. Rick Nelson, who had had earlier fame in the 50's, boiled his creative philosophy down to "got to please yourself." That's stuck with me for 50 years. I can't know what other people are going to like, so I make music that I want to listen to. Maybe someone else will like it too. History is full of number one songs that the artists had to be talked into releasing as singles. Famously, Elton John thought "Bennie and the Jets" wouldn't sell. His management had to talk him into releasing it. Later on it let him fulfill one of his dreams as an artist: made the soul charts and he got to be on Soul Train. If Elton couldn't call that shot, what chance do I, a mere mortal, have at predicting what anyone is gonna like?😄 Don't get me wrong, everybody loves to be heard and get paid, I just don't want anyone letting a lack of commercial success (or lack of desire for it, even) stop them from doing whatever they love.☮
I'm 56 and still in the game as an artist and producer. My first record was nearly forty years ago and it still plays to this day and gets an even better response than it did when it was first a hit. The OGs who inspired me are even older than I am, and I'm seen as an OG. Music is a lifelong pursuit. If you are serious then it's something that you do until your last breath. I give thanks that I still tour and I still make music as well as I've recently added acting to my repertoire
45, a wife and kids, a full time job and side hustles. Still find time to create, the key is to leave your equipment on for the day, come back to it throughout the day, and work FAST. All of these years of experience, you know what you need to do. Get your progressions, play your parts, program your drums, arrange your track, work fast, don't second guess yourself. Everything won't be great, but a lot will be solid and there will be greatness.
I'm 49 and really just getting started! I have always loved music! I went from building sound systems to listen to the music on a high level, to building tracks, and making music.
awesome, wide wise words indeed, I am 57, been in the business since i was 14 owned 3 studios and i am making more money from music now than ever before, i am producing so much music and now i have the best studio iv ever owned.... in the attic of my house lol never say you are to old that is for sure... :-) i now help my 10 year old grandson produce music, such a joy and i am still learning to from him
I came in right at the end of analog when ADats & 8track tapes were still in use.(patchbay) It was when computer used to sound “computer” & once the program’s & processors got better it was really amazing to see how it all happened.
you work hard your whole life on it, it ain't like the nba fam where you must be in your physical prime. age never matters in anything in life as long as you are in health anything is possible and stop listening to ignorant people who create those myths nah mean.
That was great food for thought! I'm 60, and even though I've dabbled in making music for a long time, I'm able to spend much more time doing that. I have a great mentor who I'm doing one-on-one with who has been a music producer and DJ and is known in the music scene I supported for over three decades. As a DJ for over 20 years, and also a radio DJ for a 15-year period, I relish using my lived experience to finally get to create, both with software and hardware. I'm starting my second year in a music technology certification program at a community college, and will soon enter a music technology program at the the local university, my alma mater. I'm not bragging at all, but just want to encourage folks that it's never too late. Indeed, technology has made both music production and DJing so much more within reach. I know pros going in their 50s and 60s who are still at it, and I know a few who plan to retire. In the end, if it's something you want to do, I say do it before you have regrets about not doing it. Thanks for this, Bolo; speaking from the heart, like you did, is always a public speaking asset. Do it, to it! Peace.
I’m 34 but been on FL for 15 years. The music industry changed so fast in the last 10 years, it’s been hard to keep up. I am now switching to MPC 37, it has given me a new motivation 🔥💪🏾
My grand kids love being with me while I'm playing with Ableton. First thing they ask when they come over is "can we do music?" Bringing up a new generation of musicians makes me feel better than actually producing tracks.
Nuff respect youngster If it's okay, can I add one thing? Don't sleep on those old ass beats you may have forgot. I just checked my old Dropbox from the 2000's and there's 10 tracks I completely forgot about, and I ain't gonna lie, I kinda like them. They may not fit into my type beat 'niche' but I'm still going to upload them to my beatstars, youtube, tik tok, and the rest of my socials.
When i used to try and record music back in the 1990's I used to use Cakewalk 4.0d version on a 8088 based computer(MS-DOS, No Windows based computer). Had no sampler and all of my instruments was daisy chained together using MIDI back in those days. Audio wise all of the instruments was ran into one line level mixer called the peavy line mix 8. Loved it. And that was using the old stuff. Back then you had to pound out everything. Drum beats, Music chords and everything back then. I can only image how good the recording equipment is today.. I saw one of the new Kord Syns.. i was blown away... I miss messing with and recording music but the equipment cost way to much for me today.. Plus health issues and life can get in the way so if you are out they making music. Keep on rockin it guys. ALL of you!!! Great Channel Bolo.. luv how what you say and how you say it. I'm 56 myself.

Started learning in the pandemic. Took a year to settle on a genre I was happy to create in. I'm 41 and it was a lifelong dream to make music and released an album last week. It helped me escape alcoholism and gave me a hobby that fills my time. Thanks for making this video, it is really great to hear at 41 I'm not over the music making hill.
I'm 42 years old, and I make Gospel Rap music & Gospel hip-hop music for God & Jesus. We won't quit using our talents & gifts no matter how old we get. No matter if we are 40, 20, or 90 years old, we will always use our talents & gifts for some purposes. Because it's no quitting. Like Aliah said age ain't nothing but a number age ain't nothing but a thing. She was probably talking about relationships, but that can also go for making music too.
I can do sign this video. I'm 34 and I rap, produce, DJ, and engineer for other artists as a side job. I'll never stop, and I use everything from vinyl samples, splice samples, create the melody myself, whatever. The day I can't make music is the day I can be escorted to my grave.
Late 30's here. And my focus shifted as i've gotten older. It's no longer about trying to be some big Super Producer and more about working with younger artist and helping them Pop. There is no age limit, producers are meant to be behind the scenes anyways, not in the spotlight. Perfectly content working on a unique sound to bring to the right artist.
I am a sync music producer in my mid 40s. I got my first decent royalty cheque recently. Its definately doable. I also have a family to look after, so its not like I have all the time. No excuses. Plus Reason gang here. Love Reaaon synths and fx inside of Ableton but started out many years ago on Reason 1.1
Yessir! The industry tries to discourage artists as they age because we get wise and deserve higher pay. We have to remain steadfast and stay at this! #46
I'm about to be 40 this year, and I'm always feeling I'm too old to produce and DJ music. But I'm constantly trying to get out of my head on it. It helps when you surround yourself with other like-minded folks, in combination with some of the younger folks as well, so you don't feel too outta place.
Raleigh Simmons. I am over 60 and you just go with the flow. Encourage each other and as a older player producer you let the Artis / Musicians express themselves freely. They’re expressing emotions through Sound/Song/Words to be used to help someone in this world. Don’t let the money RULE YOU. I agree with you Bolo. Music is LOVE and LOVE is God.

I am so happy that you posted this! I may be a newbie, but at my age I feel great! -l have years and years of listening to music! That is my plus! I was always nervous about using
computer tech! Logic changed my life! I thought I was too old! You are right! Doing this lowers stress! I love it!!! I do have a mentor that is 26 and she is surprised at my progress! - I even have a little something on Spotify! -Yes, I even learned how to make my own loops on my Akai midis!
Love your content always!👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾🎹💻🎧🫶🏾🫶🏾🫶🏾🫶🏾
BoLo you have so much great music knowledge and experience. I'm 67 and love producing.
🔥🔥🔥🔥
Bruh I’ll be 50 in October and just getting back into production after being 20+ years away. I appreciate this one. I felt like my stuff wouldn’t be relevant in today’s music.
You’d be surprised bro. Hip Hop is lowkey back bro. It’s just more experimental and jazz influenced now.
Study Flying Lotus, Knxwledge, Madlib, Dilla, Pete Rock, etc my generation (millennials still learn from them) at least in the indie scene.
Mane. . 48 and needed to hear this. I stopped for a year now just because I let the little stuff get in the way and forgot the most important part I make music which was a get away from stress.
Just turned 53 and still chopping samples making beats and having more fun than I did at 23! Don’t care about making money I just want to create!
52 and been making music since I was in the 6th grade. The love for production has never stopped.
Quincy jones didn’t produce Michael Jackson thriller album until he was 50! The greatest selling album of all time
I am 53 started with Kaway SX210 and then DX7 june Akai S950 (which had barely two 80 car lines display and a wheel!) we understand way deeper and appreciate way more!
Well spoken my brother I’m 46 years old from the mpc2000 to fl studio if you have talent what age gata do with t. I just had one of my loops from looperman called traper bellz used by Travis Scott on thank god Utopia Grammy nominated Lp . So I don’t think age should matter
33 and still going! My day is coming!!! Some of the top producers and engineers in the industry are 50 and 60+ years old!
True!
💀💀💀💀💀 bruh 33 ??? Bro you deadass young talking about you old lol
33 you deadass young talking about you old 💀💀💀💀💀💀💀💀💀💀
I'll be 40 next year, I'm dating a woman I'm interested in long term and having kids with.
Dope!
For me, I'm 52.. So right now I'm at this R&B Thug sound. And I ask myself if WHEN I get a placement, do I really wanna be in the studio full time with some of these younger artist. I just truly enjoy making music. Its how I clear my mind.
42 here and just re kindled my passion for making music as a teenager, much respect big man 💯
Keep pushin bro this might be the best informative/inspiring video for producers on TH-cam I just turned 40 and youngsters and even females be having negative shit to say about older musicians/producers I always felt that age doesn’t matter if your a true musician there is nothing that can stop the fire from burning In your body it’s clearly therapy 💯
I'm 47..I use FL 24..And the new DAWS, VSTS, ETC...MAKES LIFE EASIER! 🎯
Good music is timeless and ageless! I really appreciate this type of material BOLO. This is powerful and motivational knowledge!!
Glad you enjoyed it!
I'm 48 and I still make hip hop beats, and I'm not stopping NO TIME SOON!!
As you shouldn’t.
@@Brother-SP Facts bro!
Double Nickel club here and a Grandpa!!! 😊
Reason is awesome.🙂
Thanks for this! 44 Y.O. on deck!
🔥🔥🔥
The Alchemist has been making dope beats since the 90’s and look where he is now. Working with Kendrick, Drake, etc as an underground producer and I would argue making even better beats than his work in the 90’s. Could say the same about Premo and many more older producers.
Correct!
I wrote songs that were recorded by blues artists like Denise LaSalle, Ann Peebles, Otis Clay, Robert Cray, etc,
Never had the pleasure of major
" Hits " but I have songs in movies,
Sync licenses for TV shows, but that was then.
WE BLACK PEOPLE are tha ONLY ONES that does this to OURSELVES in tha genre that WE created!!!🤬🤬🤬
WHY do WE self inflict AGEISM to OURSELVES in our OWN genre???
Nuff Respect to your vid Bolo. This NEEDED to be heard👊👊
There’s no age limit to great
Music. Never have a limiting belief
This is inspirational. 39 turning 40 this year. Getting into production for the love of the music. Great video
43 and I’m never quitting! I’m a freelance producer and I still make my own music as an artist for fun
For Years And Tears In All Genres Of Music Have Had Older Producers Audio Engineers Mastering Engineers It Is Called Being Seasoned And Experienced We Took Years To Learn This Stuff We Just Supposed To Stop Because We Are a Certain Age They Should Want Someone That Know What They Are Doing Good Video Man
51 and Still Chucking Away.... I've been doing this since 1987, I turned DJ n2 Producer/Remixer
I am 52....and you are absolutely right. ;-)
This one was right on time and spot on my guy I'm 47 been producing since 15 and have had this conversation several times with all age groups great video we rockin wit you down here in San Antonio TX
Just hit 50 years old and I'm still at it ....heavy co-sign on the video!
Hell yeah!
After a life of touring,
Playing guitar, Doing Sync music works for me and I'm so Interested in the art.
I just turned 45 a few weeks and I’m bout to drop my next project soon. Age ain’t nothing but a number bruh 💯
Keep it up
Dude, I'm 61, been a guitarist since '77 (R&B/Funk/Gospel/etc), been composing and producing on the Mac since '92 - all facts.
🔥🔥🔥🔥
what's your email? can you play some parts for me? how much for your services?
Thank you.
Thanks!
If Elton couldn't call that shot, what chance do I, a mere mortal, have at predicting what anyone is gonna like?😄
Don't get me wrong, everybody loves to be heard and get paid, I just don't want anyone letting a lack of commercial success (or lack of desire for it, even) stop them from doing whatever they love.☮
I'm 41, I got a channel but I'm always working. Still love doing it and always inspired by all producers and musicians in general.
Bro! I’m 51. Started on an ASR10. Truncating my life away! I love FL and just got the Mpc key37 and the evolution is crazy! It doesn’t end!
Bro I feel ya
71 here and *still* charting. Loved your observations about "effects that are in key" !!! Great video, sir.
Great video BOLO!! 52 and still doing it and love it.
Glad to hear it!
I'm glad I'm not the only old beatmaker 😂..I'm 50 been making beats since before computers and still use mpc stuff to this day
I'm 56 and still in the game as an artist and producer.
Peace.
This was a needed conversation, appreciated
Thanks!
😊😊😊
Nuff respect youngster
If it's okay, can I add one thing?
Don't sleep on those old ass beats you may have forgot. I just checked my old Dropbox from the 2000's and there's 10 tracks I completely forgot about, and I ain't gonna lie, I kinda like them.
They may not fit into my type beat 'niche' but I'm still going to upload them to my beatstars, youtube, tik tok, and the rest of my socials.
37 year old here! Been a songwriter all my life and started my production career last year ❤️
When i used to try and record music back in the 1990's I used to use Cakewalk 4.0d version on a 8088 based computer(MS-DOS, No Windows based computer).
The comments along with video are so inspiring, seeing all of these individuals taking steps into their passions 💪🏼 I'm in my early 30's less than a year into doing this professionally, and I'm very excited for what the future holds 🙌🏼
I’m 55 and only recently got back into recording music as an empty nester. Would love to hop on a call with you. Thanks for the gems given here! Doc E.C. Leader of NEW Old School Music.
Im 44 and still rocking bro! Nothing but creativity and love. Quincey Jones is my mentor and he did it well after 40.
Man I appreciate videos like this.
More to come!
I needed to her this more than you realize... The artist thing as ell a being a producer is very hard. And very mentally draining.
I'm 60 !!! Got the MPC 1 , getting stems , got my lap , just need technic 12 & Yamaha hs8... I just got the love for music 🎶 Peace Bolo 🤜🏾🤛🏾
