Norway 🇳🇴 is very cold winter time. Middle of February the average temperature in the south of Norway is - 20C / - 4F
❇️ ITEM 1 - COMFORTABLE WINTER SHOES
Make sure you have warm and comfortable shoes you will bring with you that will handle wet snow and cold temperature outside keeping your feet warm.
Options discussed:
- Timberland shoes - not a great option for Norway. I find them slippery, cold and not waterproof. No matter than I used all recommended liquids to make them waterproof.
- Hiking Shoes: Karrimore - RECOMMENDED

- MOON BOOTS - HIGHLY RECOMMENDED

Alternatively, snowboarding/ skiing BASE LAYER can be used
❇️ ITEM 3 - CLOTHES: WATERPROOF and WINDPROOF
Snowboarding/ skiing clothing will work perfectly.
‼️ also double layer hat and scarf / neck warmer
❇️ ITEM 4 - GLOVES: Wool Gloves + Skiing Gloves
My recommendation: use double layer of gloves:
- First layer: wool gloves. Can be mobile phone friendly. So you don’t need to take them off every time taking pictures and answering your phone
- Second layer: skiing / snowboarding gloves. To guarantee that your hands will stay warm all the time
❇️ ITEM 5 - BACKPACK
‼️ You don’t need ‘fancy’ bags in Norway. Especially winter time.
Make sure you have a good quality backpack. Waterproof backpack is even better
❇️ ITEM 6 - PAYMENT METHODS
‼️ To avoid double charges for international transactions I would recommend alternative payment methods to regular credit cards.
I personally use Revolut but there are plenty of similar options, for example Monzo.
If you travel frequently those alternative payments methods will save you a lot of money. It doesn’t matter if you are going to Russia, Norway or Hong Kong, you will be paying local prices in local currency
❇️ ITEM 7 - PHOTOGRAPHY Equipment & Accessories
‼️ Make sure you have enough spare batteries and also SD Cards.
The last thing you want to do on your way is to delete yesterday’s footage to film today’s one 😉
Also, GoPro batteries tend to uncharge faster when it’s cold. I have this issue all the time when the temperature goes below -15C.

If you go on a trip with a bunch of Scandinavians and you try to use what they dress up in or pack, to gauge what you need to bring, then be aware that many native Scandinavians seems to be slghly more resilient to cold related problems like frostbite (not much, but some). Had some buddies from warmer countries almost fall into this trap.
Also, if you are sweating when you moove (when hiking in the winter), then you have to many layers on, on longer trips this can actually be dangerous. Try to put one of the inner layers on your upper body in your backpack when mooving, and put that layer back on the moment you stop. (even just for a 5-10 min break)

I am just so excited to go to Norwat but also very terrified of the cold climate. I am NOT my best self when I am cold. I truly think this is gonna be the biggest challenge when it comes to adjusting with the new place.
I'm very jealous of your house: it looks roomy and comfortable and full of light. You made a good choice with it.
I find your tips useful. Dressing for cold weather is a bit of a science. Nowadays there are a lot of technical materials that are lighter and more convenient, but this only make things more difficult for the layman because these fabrics must be used in a certain way.
About the spikes: Never ever wear them inside, or your (or your workplace or the shop’s) floor is ruined. Even if there are stone or ceramic tiles). Every year there is always the one...

You've actually figured it out. You are the best and do not save money when it comes to clothes - it is important. Hope you get to experience a Norwegian summer too - it can get unbelievably hot when the winter is as cold as this year. You also have the sun 20 hours a day - it will be good - I think.

I personally prefer experience ☺️ last summer - Lofoten - it was one of the best trips I ever had in my life! Unbelievable and absolutely unforgettable! I saw midnight sun. So now hopefully I’ll see the Northern Lights. I’ll also spend a night in Ice Domes in Tromsø 😉 I’m sure it’s going to be fantastic!

Gloves where you have each digit seperated are not the best ones, you could for example use those light gloves and put on mittens on the outside, norwegian fishermen for example use wool mittens as wool does not loose heat when they get wet and they do get wet :-)

Mittens! Wool mittens or waterproof mittens with wool liners. Gloves make it so the fingers aren't warming each other, whereas mittens do. Good luck!
the best all year shoes are klompa (steel toe crocs)
I slipped on the ice and broke my leg in January of 2019. @ 04:02 the extra 30 seconds it takes to put on crampons (the metal spike things that fit on the bottom of your shoe) are worth the ~20$ as insurance against it happening again.
Good part with Norway... it's easier to make a room warmer than colder.
The white ones make you look even more cute!

Regarding the timberland shoes, you could use beaver fat/lard or other leather wax to make them waterproof.
I tried everything I could 😉 in Oslo - it will work, still extremely slippery though! Be aware.
Waterproof- no spray / cream / lard works against deep Norwegian snow 😉

As we say in Norway, it's only bad clothing, not bad weather. You seems to manage anyway. And it hasn't been so cold for about 10years in the Osloregion. For good or bad, people do they payments by apps or card. 👍👍

To be honest with you, I love how cold the winter this year is! So much snow, so fresh, and so much sun as well! It’s been like a week or so with no clouds at all 😌amazing! One of the best winters of my life. What a great country you have 😉

Dont dress to warm if you are going hiking ore cross country skiing, if you get to warm you start swetting and you get wet, then you have a big problem!
Better to start a litle cold and work you warm!

It's usually not that cold in Oslo. This winter was the coldest in 10 years. Usually the temperature in winter in Oslo hovers between -5 and +5 C.

It depends on where you are going. Anna is living in the inland central eastern Norway. In this place it will be snow and cold from late november to mid april (longer or shorter varying every year). In the coast it will usually will be more rain, wind and about 0°C. Anyway the key is wool and layering. Not one thick piece of clothing but multiple thinner. Wool is a must, especially in the innermost layer and if you are active and sweat or you in other ways are humid.
In the coast or when it's warmer than -5°C, I always use a waterproof outer layer. Your outer layer should be waterproof but preferably able to "breathe". Being able to let water-wapor out, but not let water-droplets in.
When it is very cold and you are not very active, fleece or is ok (not able to contain much moisture).
Foot-wear should be waterproof but "breathing" , going above the ankle and with space for woolen socks.
To make it simple: Wool, wool, wool and wool.

Absolutely! I’m a very ‘new addition’ to this great Norwegian society. Furthermore, I’m living in south Norway, rather close to Oslo. I didn’t discover this fascinating country well enough to provide any comprehensive advice about winter in Stavanger for instance or Hammerfest - which I also would love to visit ☺️

Anna Goldman Thank you for your "pin". Here is some more information, not connected to clothing:
Generally, cold/mild and dry/wet equals inland/coast in the winter. As for snow, it is a bit more varying. Hammerfest and Tromsø (in the coast) gets extreme amounts of snow, while other places also in the coast of northern-Norway gets far less snow. The west-coast (from Kristiansand S to Kristiansund N, don't get much snow and have "mild" 0°C, wet winters. The "legendary" coldest places in Southern-Norway are Nesbyen (not far from Anna) and Røros (not far from Trondheim), they are cold and dry in the winter and warm in the summer (like Siberia in Russia). Røros is a very fascinating and beautiful place (UNESCO world-heritage) with a mining-history quite similar to Kongsberg (copper, not silver).
Bergen is known to have a lot of rain all year but is one of the most beautiful cities I know.
One place that is very remote and extremely cold in winter, but definetly worth visiting, is Karasjok/Kautokeino (you can get there from Alta, don't visit in summer if you are afraid of some musqito-bites), and experience their indigenous sami-culture. Be prepared to be delayed by raindeer in the road in the winter. In the coast of Finnmark you will be delayed by raindeer in the road in summer.
Sami culture can be found from Finnmark down south all the way to Røros (three different sami-cultures: North-Sami, Lulesami and South-Sami. Close to Russia by Kirkenes there is also one skolte-sami settlement, Neiden with a small othodox-chapel from the 16th century built by St.Trifon of Pechenga).
Less internationally famous (and less touristy) places I recommend to visit in Norway: Helgeland (coast south of Bodø), Røros, small towns on the south-coast (in the summer), the Telemark-canal and Lillehammer (The rest of the Lake-Mjøsa district also have beautiful cultural landscape)
Kongsberg, where Anna lives, has a beautiful baroque church and a fascinating mining history, making the old road from Kongsberg to Oslo (still partially preserved) at it's peak one of the most trafficed roads in Norway with an importance that, in the 17th century, earning it the name "The Kings Road" (GOT reference intended).
Much focus in Norwegian tourism has been on the fjords, Lofoten and Viking-history all beautiful and facinating, but there are lot's of other history, culture and history worth exploring too!

Its a long country you know so it depends on how far north you are. Above the arctic circle the sun does not come into view for months. And the opposite during summer, its visible for months. Still doesn't make it warm though.
