Jan Křtitel Václav Kalivoda (Johann Baptist Wenzel Kalliwoda in German) (February 21, 1801 - December 3, 1866) was a composer, conductor and violinist of Bohemian birth.

Back in the 19th century, Wenzel's symphonies were played quite often, but his chamber music seems to have been neglected. This string quartet, however, with its charming melodic ideas, shows that he was an excellent composer of chamber music. R. Schumann even held him in great esteem !

Another gem.
Kalliwoda was actually an excellent composer. nevertheless, his chamber music, when using traditional schemes, is rather conservative. Here, in the string quartet, he sues mainly the accompanied solo violin ' (sometimes cello, for expression variation) and, as s such, did not take in full account last Haydn and Mozart's innovations, not speaking of Beethoven. Nevertheless, his music is always full of distinction and inspired both melodically and harmonically. He should not be forgotten, and is one of thee past composers who have a présent modest and difficult rebirth, but nevertheless a rebirth. Perhaps at hat time, as a paradox, we g had too much geniuses who push in an unfair shadow more traditional but excellent composers. Even if you conniver Mendelssohn for instance, apart from rm the Italian symphony and his violin concerto, few of his high masterpieces such as for instance the oratorios o the Walpurgisnacht, or his last string quartet in f minor, or hs string quintets are actually well known.
