When a Flight Crew Trusts a Plane Too Much

- The experienced crew in charge of XL Airways Germany Flight 888 failed to handle a routine plane stall. Could they have placed too much faith in the plane's computer system?

@@lu3a379 He just making a joke
"How should we tell them the computer is off and it's switched to fully manual"
"Ah a small single line of abbreviated text should do it!"
😂😂
@BrantheBroken I mean when you're in the middle of an emergency situation it could be hard to notice a small error message st the top of a very crowded screen
It was manual, they just didn't use the trim to recover from stall. Error clearly said - 'use man pitch trim' on top of the attitude indicator which a pilot must have their eyes on. That's how they fly at night, based on the attitude indicator.
They should also get an audio warning with an ECAM message telling them that their flight controls are degraded and has lost their protections
so we should ignore these loud alarms then
If that’s how small the warning was, I’d have missed it too
No, there is also a warning that says DIRECT LAW on the upper ECAM screen - which would set off a single beep to alert the pilots of an ECAM warning too. They didn't mention this though.
@@Username-ww2cd maybe they made that warning that you are talking about after this accident, so that's why the pilots didnt have it
these planes have just the worst display design. Seriously, a child would know better. It's a miracle people dont die on half the flights.
They are pilots or aviation fans with flight simulator skills they have years training so they should understand it
ok,actually there's no need for the text warning, they're a very trained and experienced crew so they should ignore auto-pilot and switch to manuel mode when a plan doesn't respond very well.
Why is this titled like a meme
Because why not
Skillz n
Jqja
Skillz That's why I was thinking
hahah
"computer is no longer controlling the plane" "info that doesn't match up" how do you tell this to the pilots? with a tiny ass "use man pitch trim" text.
Yeah, that was a huge oversight on the part of Airbus thankfully it's fixed now.
Yes
There was a lot off issues with regards to automation on airbus. Manual passover was one “feature” that comes to mind. If a pilot manipulates any of the controls the auto pilot will disengage just that input. So if you rested your feet on the rudder inadequately the autopilot disconnects without a bell or warning. Aeroflot 593 is a good example of what could go wrong.. well that and putting your teenage son in the pilots seat
The designers were thinking that when an alarm sounds, the pilot will start looking at their instruments to figure out what the warning is. What they didn't take into account is two things: 1. during certain instances, the text becomes unreadable (IE, when the aircraft is shaking), and 2. pilots can become tunnel visioned on certain issues (in this case the stall), and won't check to see what is going wrong with their plane.
What's been found since then, is that certain warnings should have a verbal warning as well that's both authoritative, and clear. While this wasn't that unusual (Terrain Terrain, PULL UP! has been used for decades), other warnings have since become verbal in both military and civil aviation. "Check gear! Check gear!", "Flaps! Slats!" and so on are all now in use for this purpose.
@@jaybrooks1098 this isn't something that only Airbus did, Eastern 401 crashed because of a partial deactivation of the autopilot, and they where on a Lockheed L-1011

That is it. I am walking from now on.
bogeysbaby they crashed the plane by stalling it as a test, which is the dumbest thing i've ever heard because stalling always ends in crashes unless your at really high altitudes and you can save it. its practically impossible to stall a plane if you know its limits.
+theoretical physicist to me its easy to recover from a stall, in FSX, only i dont think IRL it would be to hard unless your at like 2,000 feet. your doomed when you enter a flatspin
dontlookatender yeah but for large jet airliners its harder.
They did the test to see if the plane would automatically prevent stalling, not how it would react to a stall
You have a higher chance you're a woman. Think about it.
So basically the pilot didn't understand how to fully operate the aircraft and relied on the computers to work for him. Noice.
JR yep
Must have been a malenium kid
If you, as a pilot, are going to perform stall tactics, I would do it at a higher altitude, so that you, as a pilot, would have more time to recover. If this pilot is a test pilot, he should have known that perhaps the pitot tubes were blocked and giving out false signals.
Robert Brown huh what
JR so basically you didn't watch or pay attention to the video
It’s baffling that three experienced pilots decided to perform a low speed test at a dangerously low altitude of 3000 feet when the normal altitude for this test is 10,000 feet.
I don't think the pilots had a chance, the computer flies the plane, pilots are only there to take the aircraft of the ground, and to land the aircraft. Once the plane is in the air the computer flies it.
Wow, that's scary. 😮
It’s crazy how the pilot sounds so calm and he knows he is about to die 😢💔

Let me answer for all the comments - AIR NZ LEASED THIS TO XL AIRWAYS!
What is that
i am so lost
Thank you
Yea I did see the logo
Asma Aziz It basically means the aircraft is owned by Air NZ but Excel was effectively renting the aeroplane from Air NZ. This was a test flight before Air NZ took the aeroplane back after excel was finished with it

TH-cam: hey watch this
how did your flight go?
Oh God.... No answer 👁️👄👁️
Been 1 month rip
Dude’s plane definitely crashed
me !😩
Ok here’s the problem: when you add full power in a jet with underwing engines, the nose pitches up. In order to recover from the initial stall, the pilot should have pushed forward on the stick without adding power.
Uh.. this is every aircraft ever because of the thrust-drag couple
Even on an airplane with a high mounted engine like the Lake Buccaneer that has it on a pylon as high as the tail.
Adding power is a part of every stall recovery. It just didn’t work because the stabilizer was trimmed aft. It was essentially the opposite of MCAS.
@@calvinnickel9995 The stall recovery techniques for large transport category aircraft are not the same as small piston engine aircraft. The angle of attack must be reduced first, and then power is added gradually to increase airspeed during level off. In some cases you may even have to reduce power to prevent an overspeed during the recovery and then add power.
That and the fact that the horizontal stabilizer was trimmed at 12° nose-up overpowered the elevators

I remember this. Was really horrified seeing an Air New Zealand plane in something like this. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think it was on some sort of "Training Flight" before it was due to be handed over back here in New Zealand? Our Nations Airline has a really good safety record. Seeing the Air New Zealand tail end just floating among the waves was chilling.

So who else is watching this right before a flight? :D

That plane was air New Zealand in the video but they said it was a different air line
The plane was undergoing an acceptance flight with a German airline that had just leased it from air new zealand. It was not a normal flight, there were only the pilots and a few other passengers on board, they were testing the aircraft before it was put in service.
Really?
Something like that. This video clip is not the whole episode, if you want the whole story you should google something like Xl Airways flight 888 crash or something.

Why is it Air New Zealand
The aircraft was Air New Zealand's aircraft but was leased to another carrier in Europe. When that lease ended, Air New Zealand was to take it back and part of that is to do the test flights. But prior to the test flights, it was repainted as well
It was just given to the German airline like a few weeks or months ago.

And this is why you fly a boeing.
Yus
boeing is less electronics so pilots do more work and errors like this dont happen
Less electronics will increase strain on the pilots, thus they will be more likely to crash.
And the electronics did not malfunction the pilots did.
I totally agree with you what you are saying you have made a good point. The problem with the Airbus is it does everything for you and pilots do little and are dependent on these to work and trust the plane too much. With a Boeing this issue won't happen however a lot of skill is needed to fly that plane. only for this scenario is where you could possibly say Boeing is better than Airbus imo

That's bull shit full stick forward should be enough, no pilot is trained to use trim in stall recovery... So sad
Actually they are.
get your facts straight, most are trained to do that if not all
I use the trim to recover from stalls in X-Plane.
Every pilot (ok me and those guys who flew with my FI as well) is trained to use the trim if input via stick doesn't work.
BUT you have to react very fast if you stall in 3000 feet. That's why you don't stall in that low altitude with such a heavy plane. So the pilot error happened before: stall in low altitude.
+00PiggyCosmonaut I was never even talked about trim during stall recovery training, because it hardly ever is so aft that you would need to use it to recover.
Plane:
Plane: i'm about to end this whole man's career
Why not let the stick temporarily override any trim when a certain (very heavy) force is applied to it?
