I've read that they are looking into extending the Merseyrail network beyond Ormskirk and out of Southport towards Preston and Wigan, replacing Nortern services on those routes. Plus a new cord at Burscough so trains can run Southport to Liverpool via Ormskirk. Possibly using hybrid units to save on electrification costs and make the project more feasible. Also the new units now being built to replace the 507/8s will be dual voltage, as any future electrification could be 25kv overhead system.
It's only what I have read online, these are Merseyrail's aspirations.
I live in the south, where our 3rd rail network is a little more extensive. Like the trains from Templecome, my services terminate at Waterloo. Unless I go to Epsom, then it's also Victoria, and now, since the new timetable, every half hour to London Bridge.

Hi Neil, thanks for watching and your comments. In Templecombe we are getting a bit worried by SWR and it's policy about not keeping spare parts for the ageing 159 fleet, water pumps and the like! Regards Pete

theghostontheline And to think, at one stage Stagecoach SWT won awards and other TOCs would visit Salisbury to learn their secret to reliability.
Having watched train services on the internet. it seems more of the EMUs are failing. One day there were four or five failures just in the morning peak.
I liked your comment re Southport.
I'm visiting the area soon (Birkdale), with a view to moving there one day. One of the attractions is Merseyrail and it level and frequency of service. I can't drive due to health.
