    I get a little tired sometimes of the "Niche Snob" term thrown around, so here's a chat about that..
    Having a limited picky taste, doesn't make you a snob.. Personally I am glad I don't think everything under the sun is great, I'd have no money left and a ridiculous sized collection. To point out too that I dislike just as many Niche as I do Designer...

      Agreed. There are some INCREDIBLE mainstream fragrances!! Actually One Million is technically a very well constructed, extremely complex and obviously well planned out fragrance. Wether you personally like it or not, is a completely different question. Personally, I don't think I could ever make a simple recreation of One Million...the way it transitions from the fruity opening notes to the woody dry down is not easily done!!! Not to mention all the CAPTIVE molecules, training and hardware the guys at IFF and tools they have to play with - HUGE ADVANTAGE over "niche," perfumes. Many niche perfumers LOVE making perfumes. Some "niche," perfumers are kids that come from rich families and wanted to make "their own business." Some "niche," fragrances are terribly simple. Example; one "niche," perfume used a SINGLE material in one of his perfume; Oud Synth 10760 E. Thats it. I SWEAR if you smell it...you`ll probably agree. ONE single, mainstream material.... he put it into a fancy gold bottle and sells it for like $350. Which one is the better fragrance? One million, which has something like 300 materials in it...and took millions of dollars of research and was put together by a man who made perfumes for 40 years....one made with hundreds and hundreds of hours of research to create? Or a "niche," perfume created with a single, cheap material?

      We know you're not a niche snob Pete after all it's all about the fragrance. I think we all begin with designer fragrances like you did. I remember you telling the story of your girlfriend that was repulsed by one of your first colognes and that that might have turned you off a little into buying designer fragrances. I can understand I get that from some people that are commonly around me that smell some of my designer fragrances. They say some are to alcohol smelling or synthetic. Now I'm starting to get Into niche like acqua di parma and bois products. Thanks for your opinions and views on the fragrance community. Keep reviewing on designer fragrances when you get the time

    Your laugh at 14:38 literally made my day! Again, you are a true joy to watch and your descriptions are exceptionally wonderful. I remember falling in love with Tonka Bean and I diluted it down because it was a cemented paste in the bottle I purchased. I went to go sniff it before going to bed one night, and accidentally spilled maybe almost a drop's worth on my shirt. This was diluted, mind you... that night, my room was completely enveloped with a Tonka Bean aroma and OMG... it was POTENT! Gorgeous, but just that 1 itty bitty drop had my room smelling like sweet hay wrapped in vanilla and a slight mustiness... LOVE that ingredient.
    I also love the fragrances that you connect with. And I did sample the Tuscan Leather and OMG... I used up nearly all of my sample, already. I'm a HUGE lover of leathery and suede fragrances and I will spend hours and several pages of trials making variations of fragrances with leathery notes. It's just one of those distinctive notes that you, in my opinion, either connect with or don't. There's almost no in between, you know?
    Worked on a few formulations this past week testing out Cocoa Absolute paired with Dark Aged Patchouli. It's an interesting combo and now I may go add some Tonka Bean and Natural Maltol because of this video. YUM! 😊😊😊😊😊 Possibly even tinker with adding a leather accord... hmmmmmm 🤔🤔🤔 off to the laboratory, Dexter style!

    • @FragranceView
      @FragranceView  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Glad you enjoy Tuscan Leather, it's one in my collection that I get the most negative comments from people around me though.. a lot of people say it smells like an ashtray.. Thank you, will check out the link now!

    • @AloraDillon
      @AloraDillon 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I remember you saying that in your video. Your barber stated something to that effect, as well. 😋 To me... and of course, this is my opinion... I don't wear fragrance to please others... I wear it to please me and my mood. Fragrance, at times, is like a medication I must have in order to help my mood... kind of like coffee, I drink coffee because I LOVE the taste and it lifts my mood... which in turn, protects those around me from my attitude if I don't get my coffee dose!! LOL I'm not sure what types of ashtrays are in your area and I grew up cleaning at least 8 to 10 in my home as both my parents were hard core smokers, but I don't remember ashtrays EVER smelling like Tuscan Leather. However, if they did... I would have never cleaned them! LOL
      The fragrance I get the most negative reviews about is Fendi (the original formula). LOVE that spicy, dark scent. Was told by my boss in the military that it smelled like bug repellent on me. I told him that it must of meant he was a pest and my fragrance was working if it kept him away. LOL... However, for that reason, I now try to wear fragrances that do not offend others, but still please me.
      As you stated, it's about YOUR nose... what resonates with you. You can't force yourself to like or dislike an aroma no matter if it's from fragrance, food, or just the air around you. If it connects with you, it connects... and if it doesn't, then it doesn't. It's our prerogative!
      Hope you have a lovely day! ~ Alora

    Don't stress yourself too much about it Pete. And don't think badly about the people giving such feedback. Many people are just frustrated about the fact that many niche fragrances are simply not accessible for them, and will also probably never be, and they project their frustruation to you, telling stuff like you are a "snob" and such. People "wish" to see people with a refined taste like you like and promote mass-production scents, so that they can buy and enjoy them also. As I said, I think it is the unconcious dissappointment from not being able to own the fragrances that you enjoy most, that gets translated into bullying. Take care and do what you want to do, and like what you want to like!

All the flankers get talked to death but these originals are really very solid and classy. Chanel Allure actually really surprised me with how much I love it. Dior Homme too. I like it better than the Intense. I’m also enjoying Gucci Guilty Absolute, Encre Noir A L’extreme, Tom Ford Ombre Leather (LOVE) and L’Occitane Eau des Beaux. Thanks! -josh

    Great video Pete! Like what you like my man. I have mentioned this to you before but, I don't know if you remember. Definitely try out Electric Wood from Room 1015. I think it would be one you really enjoy. Really smooth Cedar note with some iris in it. It also have a lovely resinous quality to it. I think it is either Benzoin or Myrrh. But, it does have an Ambroxan note in it that may throw you off. I also have one more suggestion. It is from the house of Berdoues. It is called Ruskaya Kozha. Beautiful juniper opening with a slight brown leather in it that dries into a lovely benzoin and cardamon fragrance. Really good quality scent for only 80 USD. You can get it off of FragranceNet for 55 USD. A steal in my honest opinion. Also, performs like a beast off of my skin.

    @mysty0 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    I just watched a video of yours from 2yrs ago "Designer Frangrances - First Impressions" and we seem to have similar tastes but I do like some bolder tones while you seem to like sweet. Hugo Boss Hugo, Aqua Di Gio, Tommy original are scents that leave you with nothing to complain about but they lack so back in the day I used to use them for layering to give my Chanel Allure lift and presence. On that note the original Allure was my daily and I haven't worn perfume in ages but bought a bottle for my son and learn, to my disgust, the formula has changed 3 times since 2008. Are you able to clarify what happened? Was it some European Law? Scarcity of certain oils? I'm at a loss why Chanel would take Allure and change it into the train wreck it has become, spraying it gives me flash images of scenes from Final Destination as scents crash into each other violently. What was Boyz II Men has been swapped out for the Soggy Bottom Boys and nobody seems to notice, its like they've been conditioned to think its great because of all of the praise it received pre-2008 and they're afraid to speak against the grain. Niche Snobbery? No! Free thinking individual! How could anybody like what Chanel Allure has become if not pre-conditioned to like it?

    • @FragranceView
      @FragranceView  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      It's probably due to restrictions on materials possibly, or simply cheapening the formula cost down with alternative cheaper materials. Or a combination of both factors... they never tell you the real reason why.

    Seems to be an issue in reviewing fragrance, at least from my perspective; being honest about something you don't like is taken by many viewers as "negative" or that you must be judging, when in fact, it's simply a matter of personal taste. Sometimes I avoid reviewing something I don't care for, for that very reason... But then, what is really the point in reviewing, if you can't be honest?
    There's a phrase that the negative response of people is actually a reflection of themselves... Sounds about true for those calling you a snob.

    Peter, I loved this video topic. I completely understand your point of view. I've never considered you a Niche Snob, Just someone who has a refined nose. I wish I didn't enjoy so many frags. Thankfully I don't need (or want) full sized bottles of everything I enjoy. Anyway, I have a theory...
    The male frags from Designers may not appeal to your nose because perhaps those perfumers are getting it right for the opposite sex. I find myself not liking a lot of the Designer frags that the ladies love smelling on me. Sauvage, for example I am not a big fan of, yet the ladies love when they smell it on me.
    On the flipside, Designer female frags seem to appeal to your nose better than their male counterparts which may be the result of the male nose being the actual intended target as well.
    I am not that aware of many "unisex" Designer frags on the Market (would love to test this theory on your nose), but by you stating that you prefer more Designer female frags over Niche Female frags would make sense to me because many Niche frags are Unisex. Just something to think about.

      Based on the Fragrantica forums, the reason it's so expensive is because it was discontinued at least in the US, I know it used to be sold at Ulta. Kiehl's Vanilla and Cedarwood may also be discontinued too.

    Well said Peter. It's also possible that some people feel threatened or are afraid of becoming disillusioned with increased awareness of the industry, which you seem to have in abundance. Chemical names and the idea that brands may be playing consumers are uncomfortable thoughts that may not jive with peoples' self-generated fantasies regarding perfume (not that there's anything wrong with a good fantasy). But in response to the potential threat, the natural reaction is to deride, deny and defend, as is so common with taboo subjects. Personally, I just think many people lack the perspicacity and diction to clearly articulate their ideas, and merely default to using the word "snob" without deliberation. Perhaps discerning, vigilant or forthright are more appropriate descriptors? BTW, I had the exact same reaction with Bottega Veneta PHE. Check out the parfum edition. I find it to be a little better on my skin.

    There are MANY categories of fragrance I dislike or are just “meh” and very few that I love. I tend to be drawn to more unique, mature scents over what is traditionally considered “appropriate” for a younger woman. Those things being the case, 80% or more of the fragrances I love end up being from niche houses. Not because I’m a snob, but because niche fragrances generally are more to my taste. Designer fragrances, especially releases over the past ~10 years, tend to be more mass-appealing and girlier/sweeter than I usually like.

    • @FragranceView
      @FragranceView  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I think the term Snob is totally miss used personally... Some people get butt hurt because you don't like they're favourite designer scent and just brand you a snob instead

    • @danlightened
      @danlightened 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      They're are sickly syrupy sweet and way too flowery or have this lipstick sort of smell, which I'm not fond of.
      My ideal scent on a woman would be tea, pear, peach, ylang ylang, dark vanilla, musk, ambergris, sandalwood.
      None of those sharp florals.
      Crisp top, soft, mellow, creamy, salty, breezy drydown.
      Although for winter, some heavier notes like myrrh, frankincense, spices could be a good addition to it.

    • @FragranceView
      @FragranceView  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Nope... doesn't really apply Offshore. You do have to worry about pressure in terms of maybe opening up a blind flange for example. Or if a pipeline is leaking, you don't want to get your hand anywhere near the hole.. but that worry is more for inshore divers like working on a reservoir or something like that.
      It's not something I have to think about a lot offshore, you just don't put your hands and fingers in any gaps or holes!!

  • @sticmatic
    @sticmatic 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Hey there. Thank you for sharing some insight, again, into the industry. I'm wondering if there may also be confusion around Niche having more naturals in it. "Artisan" is another "category" (yeah, ludacris to even do this), I got introduced to, lately, brosing creatingperfume dot com... Are you an artisan? =) And do you really think that naturals create more of a life on their own in a way that they may be developing more "special" new chemicals when combined than synthetics do? I have the feeling that this view is just wrong - yes, they are just more complex, so it's kinda "more" going on there, BUT that distinction still didn't make so much sense to me in the 1st place. because: A molecule is a molecule, 100 different molecules are 100 different (interacting) molecules, and 10.000 are the same! ....and they just interact with a more chaotic result as in creating increasing entropy. Which makes it less controlable - therefore harder to find a decent forumula, if that makes sense? Natural is interesting, but not per se "better", know how I mean ¿? =) Distillation or however creation of those ressources tend to have contaminations, more, what's again "interesting" =)) cheers, greetings again from germany

    • @FragranceView
      @FragranceView  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      There's different ways to approach blending, and different preferences, some prefer naturals.. some prefer synthetics, some prefer mixed media. All personal taste and subjective arguments for each.

    • @danlightened
      @danlightened 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah, it totally makes sense. Many common aroma chemicals like linalool, citral etc are the major the components that constitute an essential oil. There maybe another 5-6 or a 100 components but they not aromatically desirable or not give a clean scent one is looking for. I believe synthetics are used by companies to increase the consistency in smell and eliminate the noise.

    I play with perfumery and ever since I started doing that my smell scent has changed so much you can't smell fragrances the same so your taste on fragrance is just different from every one else because you don't smell the fragrance as a fragrance you smell the notes and you pick up notes so easily in many fragrance they kind of basically smell the same when others wouldn't even notice it so it's not being a snob it's just what happens when you do perfumery

    Designer fragrances in the perfume industry is what Pop music is to the Music industry. In general MOST people are going to enjoy it, but it doesn't really reach you on a emotional level. Yes, agreed. Plus niche snobs probably use that position to cover up their anosmia. The truth is most people just don't have senses that are that developed. That is exactly why passing sommelier exams are notoriously difficult. Another giveaway of fakery is copy pasting Fragrantica notes and not actually relying on your own senses. It's totally fine to includes notes no listed on Fragrantica folks, hint hint.
