I hope you found this helpful to listen to, I can’t wait to see where my style goes from here! 👉 I’d love to know your thoughts on the edit today as well? I have always loved editing videos and want to get more creative in the future 🥰 I had so much fun making this. X
Hi Emily! New subscriber here 😊 I never comment on TH-cam, but I just had to ask where the earrings you’re wearing in this video are from? I’ve been looking for something similar for ages! Hope you can help 🤗🤗 lots of love from Norway ❤❤
I am actually old enough to be your mum, 58 to be exact. I was in my 20's in the 80's when everything was loud and over the top. I will be forever grateful that social media did not exist back then because nobody needs to revisit that time in fashion. It is only in the past few years I have "discovered" my style. That said I think we all have to go through a crazy stage to get there. You very much remind me of my daughters who are about the same age as you. I have fallen in love with the more classic style of dressing lately. I went from a banking career to working in fast fashion for three years in my early 50's. The "rainbow vomit" seemed to suit my crazy personality and I pulled it off. NOW I have purged that and settled into a more classic, neutral almost ageless style. I love denim jeans and linen tops. I too discovered daughters of India during the plandemic and have just one of their dresses. My penance for spending time in fast fashion is to now run an opshop on my days off work in a shoe store. It is a real eyeopener on just how much clothing is discarded from fast fashion stores. I think when we are young and money may be tight is when we just buy what we can afford. You have reached the point of good styling a lot quicker than me but I will admit I had a lot of fun with fashion but I regret the waste that causes
Ah yes, I remember the '80s. Spent most of twenties in Sydney and fashion definitely was loud. I think a lot of bands and the music of the time had a big influence, especially the more glam rock era. I tried the Buffalo Gal look but felt ridiculous. Tube skirts, ski pants tried 'em all. At 68 I still don't have a set style but definitely don't wear anything that makes me feel silly or uncomfortable. Like yourself, jeans and linen is my go to a lot of the time. I too have volunteered at an op-shop and it's worrying how much fast fashion ends up there, yet it's still being peddled to the masses. I manage to find some good buys from the op-shops, both high end and on the more mass produced side. I think too that it's always worth a look at these places to see what's out there before buying new. We never know what treasure we might find.
Interesting to think back on old photos of myself and remembering favorite clothing pieces that especially felt like "me." I loved flared pants, ponchos, the whole 70's vibe was my thing and still is. Remembering our favorites over the decades is a really great idea to keep in touch with our real style essence.
I think I have found the answer to finding your style. I have a bohemian skirt I bought for $2 at the opshop. It is a beautiful cotton skirt with a great print. When I wear it people say to me "that is a really nice skirt". Same with a printed boho dress I own, people compliment the dress. Last week I wore a simple black tank, denim skirt and tan belt. I layered some necklaces and threw on a pair of tan slides, People complemented ME not my clothes. I was told "you look really good today" by people I see all the time. So, as much as I love looking at cool bohemian prints, people don't think they look good on me. So take note of comments you may get from people because it could save you a lot of time and money shopping for the wrong clothes
I think we have to be careful though, people notice the unusual, the colourful or non-mainstream silhouettes more, Doesn't mean they're not your style.
Emily, I like how you looked in London. Style is influenced by fashion, but also by the personal evolution. I am glad that you really liked your clothes and felt good
I love how you put your pregnancy and baby before your personal style. That is such a big change to the "confusion" you described that you had before. I find that very grounded.
This video was so esthetically pleasing and beautiful! I love hearing about your style journey. I just turned 40 and have definitely been guilty of trying to be the fantasy style person and it definitely is dangerous, you made me realize to slow down and think of my style more thoughtfully ❤
🙏🙌❤️ thank you so much lovely. I spent a long time on the edit and had a lot of fun making it. I’m so happy it got you thinking! ❤ Fantasy self is such an easy one to get tripped up with, especially with social media showing everyone’s dreamy highlight reels.
This is so incredibly helpful -- thank you so much for sharing your journey! :) I'm working on pairing down my wardrobe and this really resonates with me. Thanks again!
Loved this video. Great styling tips but I especially enjoyed the glimpse into your life changes. Thank you for the time and thought you put into this!
Hi Emily, this was fascinating to watch. I am in my 50’s and still trying to pin down my personal style. Unfortunately, the last 15 years have been significantly hampered by my weight gain. I cannot wear clothes I want to wear because they either look awful on my large frame, or are not available in my size. There’s a reason models are thin! And don’t get me started on “plus size” models who only have curves and lumps and bumps in the right places. Anyhow, I love your channel and am still hoping to learn and apply as many tips as possible, in spite of my weight!
I really feel for young women. I can’t recall any confusion with my personal style, before I got into YT and Instagram. I’m born 1969 and I am on a style journey since I’ve survived cancer two times. I wanted to help myself, so I got into YT and Insta, and quickly drowned in it. Now I can’t find my way out, it’s already deeply rooted in my head, that something with all of my clothes is wrong. I quite never feel good, I shop way too much and I think about it all the time. For comparison, before that era I’ve spend 40+ years feeling awesome in my clothes, ever since I was a little girl. I’ve always been very conscious about clothes, while never having the littlest doubt in my style. And I know, I’ve had style. I was also „known for my personal style” before all of that.
Wow thank you for sharing this, it’s such an interesting insight and I don’t think I’ve heard anyone say this before, but I’m almost certain you’re not alone in feeling this way. In my video coming out next week I actually talk very briefly about the feeling of “never fully feeling satisfied with my wardrobe” - so I know this feeling well. Social media has had such an impact on our lives, maybe this is something else it has impacted- our ability to compare to others. Congratulations on beating cancer twice - what an incredible feat. Sending you so much love as I’m sure it’s changed your life despite recovering ❤️🩹❤️❤️❤️ x
Thank you so much Emily! I am transitioning climate and have tried some things just because I like them on others but they are not me. I see from your video how I can find myself again. I am very similar. Classic, minimal, simple, lots of black and white with accents of camel and tan. I am really glad I found this video. On to watch the next one. Thanks so much.
It was wonderful to see how you honed in on your own sense of style. Very interested in learning more about the silhouette, color (palette), cut (vibe/essence) and how the right piece can make you feel (confident/sexy/etc). Also, great editing.🎖
Thank you so much lovely! 🙏🙏💕💕 great suggestions, i'll note all this down 🥰 I''ll be talking about more of my style journey soon and getting into the details of my colour palette and silhouette preferences too. I hope you enjoy whats to come xx
I’ve just discovered your channel and am loving it. I moved from London to Melbourne in my early/mid 20s and then from Melbourne to country Victoria in my late 20s. That last move is where I noticed the biggest shift in dressing. I had to tone down my ‘dressiness’ quite a bit because Country Vic is just so casual and not necessarily in a stylish way. I didn’t want to stand out like a sore thumb but I also didn’t want to loose my excitement in getting dressed and feeling good in my clothes. I’m still working on it and try to have pieces that can be dressed up and down using accessories/shoes etc.
I love you Tashira...talk about foundations... literally and otherwise...I think you were on to something with the teaching foundation...look how you used the makeup foundation as a teachable moment with sharing your journey and inspiring us. I do believe that it was a divine calling in your case because all the adversities helped to "slide" you into your place(one of your places) in your life. Keep prospering...keep inspiring... keep your head up... Keep entertaining us eh...❤
Beautiful photography, editing. And so cool to see your journey to style that’s right for you. Thank you for sharing personal details that affect style (or lack of interest in style.) I like the homework assignment.
Loved this video Emily. I was up early this morning and couldn’t get back to sleep so enjoyed listening to your journey. Can you do something on what to wear on hot hot days like we’ve been having here in Sydney!
Aw ❤️🙏 it’s hard to sleep in this heat isn’t it? Thanks for watching! And glad you enjoyed it. I have been thinking about doing a summer outfits video for the heat but I have a lot of other topics lined up at the moment. If I get time I might bring out a bonus vid 🥰💫 xx
What a fun video and love the homework! I too get caught up in French girl style lol, tho that has brought me to a place where i feel comfortable and myself in red lippy 😊. Thank you from another Emily (in Auckland, where it is also very humid)
Oh wow! I love that it has got you confident to wear red lippy! Totally worth getting caught up with it then 😜🥰❤️ you were drawn to it for a reason and that’s okay, 🥰 like me too, I’ve taken parts of the French girl style into my personal style now but I also now know not to overhaul my whole wardrobe to French girl style 😛 Nice to meet you 👋 🥰
Nice video! I think it was also just the style back then. I saw a lot of looks you showed that were very in style like the preppy and then the boho. If we were dressing back then like we do now we would have looked really out of place.

You’re fortunate that you’re thin & tall because basics look nice on you. Us short curvy girls look like we’re not trying hard enough in basics. We have to put more effort into looking fashionable.
