Yes, overthinking can ruin you, but so can coming home at all hours of the night (and morning!) with no plausible explanation beyond "things are crazy at work" to the wife. Wives aren't stupid, and very few jobs keep you at the office around the clock. Unless you tell your wife that you've picked up a night shift somewhere, which she will almost certainly verify one way or another, staying out all night and coming home at 7:00AM is highly suspicious behavior.

Ok. Cool happy ending but, I say this in the real world if your spouse is doing some out of the ordinary things, you do something out of the ordinary in placing a tracker on them and just lay back and watch the show. I did it and it payed off. I was not driving all over town. The tracker did the work and when, I asked little questions and things did not add up. I was there waiting and it was BUSTED. Surprises are fine and dandy but it is also risky in causing a lot of confusion. Like here.
