I've followed this guy from when he was 18 doing 3min shows. Best in SG in my opinion and I follow the scene very closely. Writes his own material. Doesn't do the usual accent-stereotypes. Please support him. Cheers
First, this guy is really funny and I will be looking for more of his stuff for sure!! Second, someone here lamented not being able to make certain jokes if you’re not of a race or culture and it forced me into having thoughts... (how dare you, good stranger?😤 Trying to be lazy and listen to stand up before bed here... Rude of you AND my brain.) It’s not that you “can’t”.... it’s, why the need to? Every race/culture can talk about everyone else-if it’s harmless, not overly targeted to any one group, and if the jokes are genuinely funny, not just aping stereotypes well-known to lead to hateful shit. I feel like, leave the more touchy stuff to each race-if you care about others and your own career. But racial jokes that aren’t racist, lazy, or in some way gross usually won’t get you called racist. There’s a reason some comics can push the line so far and still be so well-loved. And of course, there will ALWAYS be hecklers and people who Karen about things. Always SOMEONE who thinks you were handpicked and Satan-sent. That’s just the public publicing. Just roast your own the hardest and most often, and don’t use slurs. “Write what you know” is solid old advice... you’ll be funnier bc your material will be more true to life, so it’s not only culturally sensitive, it’s just good comedic practice anyway. Every race/country/religion/orientation/disability/cultural group or subgroup, likely has their own excellent comics like Jinx, already making the kind of jokes you’re talking about-as people from other groups, we should just go watch *them* and let *them* get the attention for making jokes at their people’s shared experience. We can each do that with our own experiences if we choose to be a comic or even just being funny with our friends, etc. Cultures are hilarious and strange and wonderful, all of them. Who better the storyteller than someone from that culture? So again, it’s not that we can’t... it’s asking ourselves why we would feel the need to? And if it isn’t something truly unique and creative, free of all malice, and genuinely funny without relying on an old, tired, negative trope, why would we want to?
