  • So you're in the market to train with power, but which should you buy? Should you pick up a power meter with a cheap "dumb" trainer? Or should you shell out for the smart trainer with all the bells and whistles? There are a lot of opinions on this matter, but hopefully, this video will give you the perspective you need to make the right buying decision that you need!

the ideal training is indoor, where you can have all the tool, space, time for your advantage, you cant do proper 20 minute ftp intervals in road with its traffic, but you can do easily 6+ hour endurance zone indoor and if you bored, you can watch tv while pedalling.

Thanks for the video. In the process of looking at smart trainers due to zwift racing/events. On my old cyclops fluid 2 and would prefer to save up for power meter pedals first, so when riding outdoor is possible post pandemic I have them, but races and events will take points away or not score me if I do not have a smart trainer. On a tight budget as freelance photographer and what I can afford is the budget friendly tacx flow which is out of stock now due to demand and supply issues. Do not want to get the $500usd for wheel on the Snap or M2 if direct drive are not so much more and put the money to better purpose in photo business or publishing my first book. Keep the zwift advice videos coming.

    Hey Sarah! Great video.
It seems the pandemic and the resulting shut down of racing and the rise of virtual racing and training has launched the indoor trainer market through the roof.
The manufacturers were pretty much overwhelmed earlier in the year and are now just catching up on back orders and new goods.
I started with a basic “dumb” trainer waaaaaaaay back in the 1990s and I still have it! But, of course with all the new features available, I bought a Wahoo kickr as it it’s just fine for what I do.
Buy cheap, buy twice or on the other hand “buy once, cry 😢 once” 😂. That’s what I learned when I first started doing Triathlons back in 2012.
You’re so right! It’s a very complicated field out there. It took me months of watching DC Rainmaker and Shane LamaMan to even understand what was available. In fact, watching their channels is how I found YOU my dear!❤️
They not only have the best independent analysis of trainers and power meters, they review watches, and other equipment as well. They are so good, the manufactures routinely interact with them as they objectively review products.
They both have great senses of humor and are totally committed and dedicated to putting gear through real life testing. Cant go wrong with them.
One thing I’m about to do that might help some other folks is I’m going to put a power meter on my old spin bike along with a speed sensor. Actually, the speed sensor is not really needed. I want this option so that my road bike can take a break and also just because I want to see what happens.
I still use my old trainer on a gravel type bike I keep in an extra room at work so I can ride at lunch or immediately after work on Zwift.
It has a Stages Gen 3 power meter on it.
I was able to find the power calibration curve for the old trainer on Zwift and how to set the resistance via the old instruction manual I found online in pdf format.
The comparison to road is close enough and I get a great workout.
One of the things I love about Shane is that he usually includes how to do things at a very basic level or at the supreme level and a few ways in between. His dedication is just unreal.
Anyways, that’s my lil 2 cents.
Love your channel and I love the way you think and talk. Your lighting set up on this video was very interesting.

Certainly some interesting times we find ourselves in. More and more people are going to be navigating this landscape and it's both easier and more complicated than ever before to find your way. Shane and Ray are key ambassadors for endurance sport and are invaluable resources. It is very cool to see how people can generate creative solutions as well. Gone are the days of being 100% at the mercy of manufacturers to generate usable data. Hopefully, an unintended "benefit" of these times is more ingenuity and creativity! Love the comment, have a great day!

Great video. One thing I don't see many people talk about is how having a power meter on your bike can keep your indoor numbers consistent with your outdoor numbers when you also use a smart trainer. By pairing your online platform to use your power meter as the power source instead of the trainer, your numbers will be consistent. Platforms like TrainerRoad take it to another level by doing power smoothing to get an even better experience of blending the trainer response with the bike power meter. Have you tried this at all? Thanks for the great videos!!

I've used power match on trainerroad, it's definitely a great feature. My PM and smart trainer track within 3 watts so I just let the trainer transmit power as there is still a lag with power match, but I always recommend people use a backup on a head unit or watch that takes all their primary data sensors and use that data to feed trainingpeaks/todays plan and they can use Zwift or TR to feed strava with a prettier file.

I have to admit, I never put power meter into the dumb trainer/smart trainer quandary. Now that 2020 has brought more indoor training for me, I'm no longer commuting to work and my long summer cycles. Typically, with the miles I do, I average 10k miles per year, I go through a set of pedals per year as we get all weathers in one day here in Scotland.
Great video again - thank you.
Have to then say, based on Shane's Lama - I'm almost heading to the Elite Direto as an upgrade to my dumb Novo Force.

2020 has certainly been an interesting year. I guess if there is a "positive" that has come out of it, there seem to be far more people entering the world of cycling as an outlet. Hopefully, a good portion of these folks is here to stay. Ironically I make a video like this in large part, with them in mind, then I remember that the whole manufacturing crisis and closures are going to make some of these devices almost impossible to find.🤦‍♀️

@@EverythingIsPhotogenic I've known of at least 10 people in a small circle of friends that, despite trying for years, have finally taken up cycling. Me, I was never one for indoors, but it is feeding my cycling habit during our lockdowns. Hopefully all supply chains balance out and 2021 is just a great year for two wheels.

Welp...you cleared that up for me. I primarily am riding inside and I have the Kickr Core, and even if it's sort of kind of in the ballpark correct, that's good enough for my purposes. At least now I know if I ever decide to ride primarily outdoors again a power meter would be something I would think about getting. Thank you for clarifying everything as usual! Personally I was wondering what Teddy uses. He makes good recommendations.

    Comprehensive!
I am in the market for an indoor trainer now after 2 crashes 6 weeks apart on the road. First one o came unclipped whilst doing some sprints and when over the bars loosing balance. Then a few weeks ago a motorbike riders crashed into me from behind so now I have some injury to my back.
I don't want to ride outdoors again after I get well. Perhaps only mid o end of next year or so so I am really looking at getting an indoor trainer in January sometime .. I had the option of getting a indoor trainer in June this year so I opted to go for the Quard Dfour. Really enjoyed my riding and the structured training and made some good gains in 3 months ...
I am more specifically looking mid range for now which is still interactive and smart ... Elite Suito seems good ... there is also Magene T300 which is made in China. They had a good review on there Shimano left hand power meter by GPLama. The Gravat2 also got a good review. Here the T300 goes for the same price as the Suito however the spec is better ...
Anyways I am still looking at options and it's really limited here in terms of choice. Any recommendations on websites for used indoor trainers in the USA? I am sure the market must be massive there and people are always upgrading

I am glad you are on the mend. Crashes are definitely no fun. Maybe with some time your perspective will change and you'll want to head back outdoors, but for now there is zwift. People swear by gravel, safe, off the beaten path, no distracted drivers and much softer surfaces lol. In terms of used trainers, the market is a little dry at the moment as a result of covid. I think people are still trying to get their hands on new trainers so aren't letting go of their old ones as quickly. I would recommend joining some facebook groups and checking the marketplace. Having a name and picture attached to these sellers is quite a bit more trustworthy than a craigslist. eBay is tough because the shipping is usually prohibitive unless you find someone who can hook you up with free shipping. Check for refurbished too sometimes you can get a killer deal especially if it's a model back. Sometimes Amazon will surprise you too, third party sellers who might fulfill through amazon will have good deals and you can take advantage of Amazon's free shipping. You have to be a little more diligent now in your hunt than has been the case for the past several years, but you'll find something that fits your budget and feature set for sure, it will just take a little extra patience. 😉

@@EverythingIsPhotogenic hi there. I have found one and should get it today or tomorrow so I have to learn many new things. That's one of the reasons I have also been following your channel - you are really jacked up when it comes to IT stuff ! One explanation is a full serving and no need for a second helping elsewhere ! Haha
Now I need to learn how to set up these direct drive trainers and the best way to calibrate or to do spin downs. I don't think I will setup on zwift at first. Probably look at some free app. I think I saw one called RGT. I need to soft pedal for a month or so and relatively short sessions. I can't remember if I saw an initial smart trainer setup or a new to indoor riding set up on your channel so will browse. I do see that you had some months off of making vids when growing to see anything useful ...
Anyways ! Thanx for the comprehensive content

I managed to get lucky and found a fantastic deal on a second-hand trainer. Where I was at at the time, I could put the money towards that, it would allow me to train to power and make use of training. Whereas I knew that even if I got the power meter, I'd have to pay another 2-300 for a bike computer that would work with it.

Hi Sarah, another very interesting video, and from my experience I have found that having a power meter is one thing, knowing how to use it correctly is another thing. One the subject of accuracy, have you had any feed back as yet from from a rider who owns a GIANT' that comes supplied with one? I'm the market for a new TCR. And yes, I'd defiantly recommend Shane Miller (GP Lama) for tips.

    • @EverythingIsPhotogenic
      @EverythingIsPhotogenic  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Hi 🙂 never used a PM that cane equipped with a bike. I can't imagine with the trickle-down technology that they would be outside of the typical window of accuracy. I probably would use a pedal-based system myself anyway, I like the metrics and the ease of maintenance and hot-swap capability of the aftermarket power pedals, but I think they've provided a solid value for customers in including it. That has always been Giant's model. The whole has always provided much more value than the sum of their parts.
