That's a common theme in Hokuto no Ken. So many good people or people that have turned things around and start living a better life get killed
I feel like that's also kind of what gives hnk its charm. Ken's journey sets him into learning the value of life and its fragility. It gives him the capacity to grow as a person and learn to have the capacity to understand even the worst of the monsters like souther. Not to mention even bring out the best from the worst kind of people at their final moments.
