My great grandfather was killed in action on hill 70 near loos. My dad and me have researched this and there is maybe a blue on blue action by British artillery because they couldn’t get up quick enough. He died on the 26th September 1915 after gas was released high turned back on British troops as the wind turned direction.
I was lucky, if that's the right word, enough to see a veteran of the Chosin Reservoir speak at my community college. There was a veteran of the conflict in Viet Nam there as well, and the contrasting experience of the two men was a formative experience for me - to say nothing of their dedication and sacrifice.
There was plenty of static warfare in WW2 as well, often underlighted though because it was less glamourous than chasing off into the Sunrise/Sunset with tank-divisions ofcourse 🙂 Looks better for the cameras than having to fight your way through a blown to bits city between civilians.
Sadly my GT GT grandfather private William Wilson of the Norfolk regt sadly got killed at the battle of Loos. September 25th 1915. Sadly his body was never found. R.I.P heroes.😢✝️🙏
I just tried to purchase a copy of your book on Amazon but couldn't. The only option available was the kindle version, but for some reason I couldn't buy it.
London Irish Rifles took the town in this battle. Their main battle honour. Look up Sgt Edwards, the captain of the football team kicked a football into the German trenches and the battalion stormed forwards relatively successfully.
General haig should have said my troops are not moving forward without artillery or support fire. Gas should have been fired by artillery or mortars or a last resort
If I had been a soldier or NCO I would have advised my my OC or Co don’t move without fire or artillery fire. Ohh gas is getting used. Action on wind changing direction or no wind. We could sustain casualties. Would recommend as a NCO fire or artillery fire and use gas as a last resort. This is by a NCO in His Majesty’s army
Interesting lecture … excellent content. But it’s a shame the speaker doesn’t speak in normal tones? He speaks as if there’s no microphone and he’s addressing a crowd 50m away…it’s hard work !
Your complaint is a strange one, and to make it does not reflect well on you. While the Western Front has inspired so many books and so much analysis, I find it interesting that the conspiracy to use Loos to remove French in favour of Haig has never been properly examined. Of course, criticising Haig is not fashionable.
@@mhollman8650 Some facts are trivial and irrelevant and even rude to point out. It's a freaking LECTURE, just put on a nice picture of some flowers or something and listen. I didn't mind myself, perhaps I concentrate better than some other people.

A good insight into the role of topogpahy in battles
great war veterans and korean war veterans know the horrors of static trench warfare their memories must never be forgotten
Ukrainians are busting Russian Orc trenches pretty much the same way… Jump in and work down the trench with frags

Lost my G/Uncle Harry Martin White G/326 6Bn Queens Own Royal West Kents at Loos Oct 14 1915 killed by shellfire and his body was never recovered.
Just bought your book on loos and gas by foulkes. Thank you.
If the British had good thinking they would have brought up artillery and fire support before starting the attack and wouldn’t have needed to use gas

O
A rather rambling presentation I'm afraid.
Doyle STOP rocking side to side like an elementary school boy, very distracting and unprofessional.
Osteoarthritic knees. I have to do that myself. They call me "Surfing Teacher".

The bouncing back and forth IS distracting. How is that anything but factual ?
