Something i learned from my teacher is before you start, put thumb tacks in a straight line on the inside of the bown starting from the bottem and going to the rim, and when your triming if you hit a tack, that means stop trimming there, and you should get about a 1/4th inch thickness all around .

I am right with you! Trimming causes me great anxiety and I HATE IT!! I have destroyed SO MANY bowls that I love...I am considering just adding a coil foot to my thrown bowls and foregoing the trimming process all together (except the sides to make them meet my added foot)
@neonxblondie Or flick the botton/sides to hear how thick it is. A low "thunk" means it is thick, and a high "think" means it is thin. Flick it before you ever start trimming, and flick it a few times in the process of trimming. =]
ebetz50 I am not an expert by ANY means and have yet to successfully trim a foot on a bowl...but my instructor also has us “test” by gently pressing the middle. When you feel it give a little bit, it’s time to stop. She also has us do the middle before the outside so we can determine the depth. That way we can trim the outside to match the depth of the inside. Just a different technique but it makes sense to me (at least in theory...like I said, trimming is NOT my friend 😂🤣). The first thing she has us do is use a needle tool to mark where the outside of the foot will be, then the inside of the foot. Then we scoop out the inside, get the depth, then do the outside. Basically, in almost complete reverse of this video. Not knocking this way at all...just presenting a different technique. Every teacher has a different way of teaching.
Yes, smaller corrections as it gets closer to center. Note how far she moved it the first time, and then how little she moved it the second time. And you and I will likely move it more than twice to get it right.
Why do all these video's on pottery for beginners always have the camea in the wrong place ? It should be over the shoulder then we can see what you see, the right way, instead of infront or to the side, which makes us see the opposite way round 😤
Actually, i think the monotone comes from being so focused on what she's doing that she doesn't have a whole lot emotion in her voice. It takes concentration to sound enthused. She's making art.

If you go through the bottom make it a happy accident. Slap a piece of wire mesh in the hole and call it a succulent planter or an orchid pot!

Very nice - will help me a lot. I noticed that you tapped the bottom of the pot while making the foot. This must help you determine how deep to go.

Leather and leather hard are the best to trim at!
