  • One Religion, Two Countries: Classical and Neo-Confucianism in Korea & Japan
Dr. John Goulde, Professor of Religion, Sweet Briar College
It isn't a surprise that Korea and Japan adopted Confucianism in different ways. Discover which country used it for bureaucracy and governance, and which country preferred it for academic study.

Since there was ancient civilization North of North Korea with Stonehenge and waved sword only mostly found in Korea and North region, there as a culture that had religion, language, culture, metallurgy. If that is the indication, the recent discovery of the red mountain including the Godness statue wearing a Bear necklace (Bear is symbolic for women in Korean culture at that time there was Bear nation and Tiger nation and Bird nation(the root of ancient Korea has bird at top of their totem poles) and most likely Bird nation took Bear nation's princess(VIP woman) as Bride) that dates back 7000 BC. Fast forward to about 700 AD, After writing was more prevalent, the numerous books from China indicated they learned everything from 'north' civilization. Thus, most historical documents indicate China's civilization was derived from this civilization. The Chinese books indicate 'north' civilization just 'north civilization' without a name. However, Korean calls in "GoChoSen" which means ancient (go) Cho (bird) sen (nation) of the old Korea. This first civilization of east Asia was so large that its people moved out to both east and westwards. The same or exact same artifacts are being discovered in North Italy to Ireland and Finland, to east all the way to Mexico, and along the traveling route, same or similar artifacts and languages are found. By the way, the next nation was called "Gogyro" which means hook which the ying-yang symbol came from, it means 'order or harmony via governing' set by GoChoSen. And following after GoChosen was the nation name of "Go (old) gyro (hook)' the 'hook' part 'gyro' became 'Korea' in the present day. It's interesting to find "Mississippi" "Michigan", etc and its meanings are the same as Korean! "Mi" - means in Korea is 'freshwater or river'; "chi or ci (si)" - means in Korea 'fish' - sippi and gan - means in Korea 'place (home or house), Again only in old GoChoSen languages. Note that in linguistics, it's very hard to not only match the sound but also the meaning. If I follow the logic, unless there was a large population and civilization with the resource and advancement of culture only can have the means to explore in the motivation of necessity or curiosity. And the people from such civilizations can only expand and overlap o ver further expansions It may be worth studying the "yo-dong" civilization and first nation of Eas Asia (or maybe the human Sapien Sapien) "GochoSen" more in-depth. It can bring together the puzzles of where nations come from and why there was a road before the silk road that was well-traveled with premium horses and carts with carts at least 5000 BC before the silk road.

It was a really good title, however, the lecture was not like what I expected.
    I don't get some points.
Mongol, Kithan, nor Jurchen were chinese. If they were(are) Chinese, Huns were(are) Europeans.
They stayed beyond the northern terrirory of Korean Peninsula and main land China.
They rushed to conqueor main land China, when Chinese dynasty was under political conflict.
Did Korean people have strong relationship with Chinese dynasty to eager for protection?
No such diplamatic relation existed, as I know, or let me know the detail.
On the contrary, People and Dynasty at Korean Peninsula protected main land China not by its will.
For Korean Peninsula was always a primary target by those intruders because rear attack from Korean Peninsula had been critical.
That is why Korean Peninsula suffered from a lot of struggles with foreign people.
Luckily, Kogyro and Koryo had really strong military power.
So It was not easy to conquor Korean Peninsula because only few succeeded to grab it for thousands years.
Only exception was Ming Dynasty at ImJin war.
Kim Si-seup did not learn confucianism learning at temple or by monk.
Monk groups or buddhist temple schools were once called elite at Shilla, however, no more since late Koryo.
Yes, he did enter a temple, only for his own buddhism belief and asceticism.
He became a monk in his later age.
He studied forgotten Korean buddhism tradition and left beautiful buddhism books!
    .
    .
    .
Let me make story short for [One Religion, Two Countries]
    Neo Confucianism is not Confucianism.
It was a thouand years ago that people already accepted that classical confucianism could not be an answer to new social/economical environment.
Will such norms as "respect for elders", "man first-woman next" and "loyalty to friend" give solution for distribution of wealth? No!
Neo Confucianism is an laborate manual to run a state as well as speculative ideology.
Japan followed Neo-Confucianism sincerely (they took over it at ImJin War) and succeeded to enter modern country,
however, Chosun failed to follow Neo-Confucianism since ImJin War.

He makes it sound like the Chinese were the "protector" for korea.🤣
They did so to protect themselves. They did not want the 3 kingdoms to unite, like today's korea.
Chinese came to help( not much of help btw) korea during the Japanese invasion, only to protect themselves from the Japanese.
Anyhow, it was enjoyable for the most part.

      朝鲜日本皆中国子,朝鲜孝子也,日本逆子也。----《朝鲜王朝实录》
Korea and Japan are all sons of China, Korea is a dutiful son, and Japan is a rebellious son. ---- "Records of the Joseon Dynasty"

The tribute system made China the Father, or protector of the nations. If China didn't want Korea to unite they wouldn't support Silla in their wars of unification. The Japanese at that time was not a threat at all.
