Ron Laflore did not start playing baseball until he was in Prison. Thanks to Billy Martin for getting him out of jail & on the Detroit Tigers & talk about fast.
I love everything about this video. As a baseball mom, from Little League to Travel ball to Highschool, you got a great coach! Kyle really knows his stuff!
When Ruth went to England, he tried out Cricket and reportedly hit some of the longest balls that his instructor had seen. His instructor who was a noted Cricket pro wanted to train Babe up as a Cricket batsman and thought he could in a short term be one of the best. Babe asked him how much a top Cricket player made and was told about the equivalency of $250 a month. Since Babe at the time was making $80,000 with the Yankees, he said that he was going to stay with baseball.
That was great, Diane. Happy to see you enjoyed your introduction to the sport. Do go to a game sometime when you're here during baseball season perhaps at Fenway (Boston) or Wrigley (Chicago). Big difference between watching a game on television and in person where you can see everything going on beyond what you see on camera.
He said baseball goes back to the early 1900s, but it actually goes back to the mid 1800s. It was significantly different at first, and originally called Base Ball (two words), but mostly recognizable to a modern baseball fan. The rules to baseball had settled close to what we have today when the first professional team was formed in 1869. The first major league was formed in 1871. It was replaced by the National League in 1876, which is half of what we now know as Major League Baseball (MLB). The other half, the American League, was formed out of a minor league and it claimed major league status in 1901. The two leagues cooperated throughout the 20th century, but did not formally merge until the year 2000. There are quite a few professional and amateur teams and leagues across the country and around the world, but MLB is generally considered the highest level, certainly in the United States at least. And Canada, there is currently one Canadian team in MLB.
Baseball surged in popularity in the latter 1800's when the US switched down from a 6-day work week, to a 5 day, plus a half-day Saturday. The city Fathers didn't think it would be morally good to have everyone loafing about on the Saturday getting into trouble, so they encouraged men to go to the parks and play baseball.
I never liked baseball but the best thing about it is how good you are is completely up to you. You don't need another player to make you look good. You can either hit, catch and throw or you can't. With other sports like football you need someone else to let you be your best, a quarterback is only as good as his receivers.
With baseball hitting it's important to remember that even the best of the best of the best only get a hit around 30% of the time. Hitting a baseball well is very hard.
Thanks Diane! I really enjoyed today’s video. You seemed like you were having a lot of fun. I burst out laughing when ED made the comment about you regarding bases. 😂
Hit the ball. Throw the ball. Catch the ball. Run the bases. The four fundamental baseball skills. Plus, you have to learn the mental part of the game.
Diane.. Just know that, when I giggle at your exploits, it's in good humor. I love seeing people try new things. And, you remind me of a little kid in this one. But, as he said... That's when baseball is the most fun.
Way back in the 90's I worked in defense. One day we had a company softball game instead of a work day. It was the first time I ever wore cleats. I came to bat, assumed the opposite of the stance illustrated here (legs together, not apart) and when the slo-pitch pitcher lobbed his first pitch, I stepped into the swing, made contact, and the giggling behind me became one drawn out Woooooah! The ball went so far it ended up on the other diamond. I also caught a right field fly ball while I was running away from it with my back turned. The moral is: always play with cleats!
Yay Coach Kyle! Thanks for helping our Irish kid learn about an American sport 🎉🎉 You'd be a great teacher for the young children. - Oh & thanks for not bashing our visitor with the throwing machine balls😅
He could have given her a big wiffle ball bat and a rubber ball, with some gentle tosses. That's how we played in elementary school. She could have hit that I think.

Ah, you're in the city I grew up in. Lynn, Lynn the city of sin You never come out, the way you came in You ask for water, but they give you gin The girls say no, yet they always give in. I lived in Southern California and Las Vegas and was always surprised by how many people would recite that little ditty to me when I told them where I was from, I had always thought it was just a local thing! I'm surprised to see you there, its not really much of a tourist spot. There are some interesting places though, High Rock Tower and the Stone Tower in Lynn Woods are cool. There's also Dungeon Rock, where many believe a buried pirate treasure is deep in the bottom of the cave and a man died in a 1638 earthquake trying to dig to it. Much of what he dug out also collapsed and now there's a deep hole at the end of the tunnel filled with water at the bottom. It is known that way back then pirate ships occassionally sailed up the nearby Saugus River to avoid British naval ships. The old burial ground on Wetern Ave. has graves dating back to the 1600's. Lots of bars and pubs in the city, talk to the locals, some aren't the safest places to be. Lots of great eating places, and don't forget to try a roast beef sandwich, they're among the best in the country, and Brothers Deli on Market Street is a great place for breakfast or lunch. Enjoyed the reaction very much!
That was a fun video. The Babe Ruth style bat came from the 1920s, where the thinking was that heavier bats equaled more power, thus more home runs. Later the theory came into vogue that lighter bats resulted in faster swings to give more power. The pros use wooden bats. The ball comes off much faster on metal bats, so the pro players use the older style wooden bats as a built-in handicap. At the pro level, using metal bats would result in more hits and skew the game away from pitching and defense. Oh, and Rounders is generally recognized as the precursor to baseball.
Great video! Baseball is the best sport. Thank you, Kyle, for helping Diane understand and practice some basics of the game. Diane, you did great, showing your athleticism. And you showed real curiosity about this wonderful game and coordination in doing the some of the basics. Thank you, Diane!
Such a fun video! Just goes to show how much skill it takes to make baseball look effortless. On a side note, I was just in Louisville Kentucky a few months ago and got a chance to hold one of Babe Ruth’s actual game used bats at the Louisville Slugger museum.
What a fun video. I've heard softball is even harder than baseball when it comes to batting because they have even less time to react to the pitches due to the reduced distances. Both require such quick reflexes.

Sometimes I forget or didn't fully realize or think about it, that a lot of people in Europe probably don't even think about the basics of baseball. A lot of terms and expressions (like the bases she mentioned) are baseball related. I'm not even into it myself, I guess I just kind of took it for granted that most people knew the game and its rules, we did it at school along with other things like soccer, basketball, volleyball, tennis (maybe others). I think American football was more optional and only if you were on a team, but in gym we did a variety of sports.
Babe Ruth Memorabilia can go for some really good money. Babe Ruth most expensive autograph went for 800,000 dollars from 1933 signed baseball. There is a movie made about Babe Ruth playing baseball called The Babe(1992). some good baseball movies are bad news bears original and remake, the sandlot, mr baseball, a league of there own, angels in the outfield, mr. baseball, major league. I still have some baseball cards I collected as a kid. I would like to see You try some other sports too. Treat Yourself to some good sports concession stand foods like hotdogs, hamburgers, chicken fingers with BBQ sauce, pizza, nachos, fries, crisp chips, pretzels, cracker jacks, pop corn, ice cream, chocolates, candies, and Guinness.
Babe Ruth from baseball isn't Baby Ruth from the chocolate bar. Actual namesake story is a bit muddled but it's generally accepted that Baby Ruth was Ruth Cleveland, daughter of US President Grover Cleveland. Baseball's been around since the early 1800's, not the early 1900's.
Bat girl/bat boy are the volunteer young people who stay in the foul territory (left and right of the playing area) and retrieve bats after a player makes a hit, and many of the foul balls (balls hit into foul territory). Very good Diane. Starting young just throwing the ball with Dad is important for baseball. But the good news is you can become a baseball type girl easily. It is a 'talking game' perhaps more than any other. Thousands of stats are kept on it from many walks of life. Watch a few games next season. Just one warning. It can be a very boring game for spectators. Not like 'cricket boring' but still pretty bad.
Heh, You did all right, for all that the movements are unfamiliar to you. You should see if anyone's up for some wiffleball while you're there. :) Or when it's warmer, I guess really. Also funny what the instructor says, when I was a kid the rich kids had the aluminum bats and the rest of us still had wooden ones. Not so high-status in the reindeer games then. :)
Today is National Regifting Day. An idea to regift Chewie His teddies in some Christmas Gift Wrap to Enjoy the Day. learned some new terms today how to play baseball. When I was a kid I went on the field and played baseball with friends. Baseball fly at 90+ miles per hour when being pitched. I enjoyed getting to see You learn all the baseball positions. What was Your favorite position learning to play Baseball. Batter, Pitcher, Catcher, umpire?
@@DianeJennings Right, I was thinking how much Chewie likes to shred paper and teddies. Found some Christmas teddies at Wal-Mart I think Chewie would like. You looked like You did a good job learning all the baseball. I think You would make a good coach for a team.
As you've discovered, baseball is a game where "failure" is the norm. Hit the ball 3 out of every 10 at bats (.300) and you're a genius! The last player to bat .400 for the season was Ted Williams back in 1941. He wrote an entire book on hitting and always insisted that hitting a baseball was the hardest single act in sports.

Okay, that settles it. An Irish American here, as a suiter. 100%
Babe Ruth didn’t just have the Homerun record but also the strikeout record.
😮😮😮
What FUN! I'm impressed with the idea, to try sports (cultural group fun events - intelligent way to see a mindset,) as an introduction to different cultures. Would gladly introduce you to sportss followed by the more sedentary age group - harvesting deer, duck, fowl, gator, and tricking the wet scaled things to get out of the water and into our bellies.
P.S. You should use entire body during rugby war, including 😅a hand of well sharpened nails.
Well young lady. The most difficult thing in sports is trying to hit a baseball moving 90 miles per hour with a piece of wood that is almost the same diameter. Bravo!⚾️
Because it's a round ball and a round bat but you have to hit it square!
Cool!
That was a great video! You did great. Like everything, it takes lots of practice. I played Little League Baseball and played left field and wore number 14, the same number and position that Pete Rose played at the time. He was my favorite player growing up. In case you haven’t heard of him he is basesballs all time hit leader and recently passed away. He was banned from baseball for betting on games and was denied being inducted into the Hall of Fame. Coach Kyle was a good instructor. Take care! 🙏🏼
Very interestinggggg
Thank you!
Thankful Thursdays Video is Here Whoo Hoo! Christmas Party On! Music On! Food On! Baseball On! Thanks for Premiere bringing lots of Happiness, Celebrations, Cheer, and Christmas Vibes. Sent a Gift Wednesday and Today to Bring some Extra Joy to Your Day. Only 6 days left till Christmas. Not much time left to do some last minute shopping for Gifts and Food. Iam sure Chewie would like some of His teddies in Christmas wrapping paper to Shred. Happy Thursday
I bought some wrapping paper for him today thank you! Glad you enjoyed it. I just checked in on PP thank you so much for your kind gifts 🎁 🥰
@@DianeJenningsCool, gives Chewie some entertainment. Enjoyed it very much. Your Welcome Always Here for You and Chewie Merry Christmas 🎁🥰
@coachkyle11 killed it 🔥
My dog 💪🏻🙏🏻
6:44 only if you’re a “designated hitter”😂
Looks like you had a grand time!😊😊Coach Kyle was a fountain of great info and very personable.😊😊Its a great game for all!!😊😊😊 (oh! Groovy new intro too!)
Yes he was great fun!
She was my favorite lesson so far!
Baseball is one of my favorite sports. I'm a Red Sox fan.
Nice!!! I don’t know who that is entirely but I’ve heard of them
Very good Diane.
"They pitched a NO HITTER!"
Yup, that is considered exciting.🤪
@@sterling557 Too a baseball nerd it really is. I know just enough that is interesting to watch. For the casual fan, not so much.
Great idea!!
@@DianeJennings Right, I was thinking how much Chewie likes to shred paper and teddies. Found some Christmas teddies at Wal-Mart I think Chewie would like. You looked like You did a good job learning all the baseball. I think You would make a good coach for a team.
Fun time beautiful ❤ as someone who has played and coached ball since I was 6(over 55 years😊)that was awesomeness 🔥
4:12 Diane slowly integrating into the sporting fist bump culture
YahHoo! Another premiere! Will hafta watch at least twice, just to see the video without distraction! Clever one, that Editor is.
You're the best! Haha is she so smart!?
Happy Friday!! I'm looking forward this video.Have a great weekend.
Thank you! You too!!
Oh yeah can't wait for you to try ice hockey haha
As you've discovered, baseball is a game where "failure" is the norm. Hit the ball 3 out of every 10 at bats (.300) and you're a genius! The last player to bat .400 for the season was Ted Williams back in 1941. He wrote an entire book on hitting and always insisted that hitting a baseball was the hardest single act in sports.
