Thanks man, I’m “kicking it” at home with my first newborn off work until late October and wanted to start my business with a membership site and use that interaction to know what to build for my courses. Good strategy? Will definitely check out the checklist. Look forward to listening to this!
Summary 1. Not Including a Community ( Content, Coaching, Community) - they wil come for content, STAY for community - most important is the networks and community 2. A Confusing Name /No clear benefit in name( People need to get it.- Have a one sentence tag line/promise - benefit driven) 'Get access to A + B and community so you can x' 3. Not offering an annual plan option. ( a suggestion is offer a two month discount if paying annually- give people more choice.)
Thanks, Graham! This was really helpful! Brainstorming my first paid membership and got lots of valuable insight here. This is going to be a great membership! 🎉
No membership site yet but will in time once I have enough courses up. For now it's one Evergreen course for Beginner to Intermediate Guitar Players with more coming soon
Great video! Thank you for this @GrahamCochrane I’ve been wanting to start a membership for over a year around my English Paper Piecing niche, a quilt-making technique. Without much planning I tried starting one on Patreon but quickly grew unsatisfied with the platform. I wanted my members to be able to interact more with my posts and with each other. After a few months and four members, I decided to shift over to Kajabi. I’m in the process of doing that now. But this time I’m trying to lay a good foundation before launching it. I just downloaded your guide and am looking forward to planning and building my membership with it. Thanks again!
Great Video Graham! I have been thinking about doing a membership site as you know because I keep asking you questions about it haha! Do you think your membership needs a course inside the membership when you start? Or do you feel like you can just start a membership with just community, monthly training's and monthly Q&A calls without a course built into it?
Thanks G. Question, I used your affiliate for 28 days Kajabi, thank you, AND my question is regarding lead magnet. Do you prefer PDF for them to download or have you thought of placing this PDF as 1 or 2 modules in Kajabi (for the stickiness)? Any thoughts on the psychological pros or cons would be awesome!
Thanks for using my link! Great question - I just email them a PDF download but I've seen people create Kajabi products for their free lead magnets. Haven't done that myself.
Thank you Graham, as always, your videos are so useful. I am trying to build a community but I find it challenging. I might try the live coaching sessions 🤓 My membership is to acquire French the natural way. I am a friend of your Mum!
Thank you so much. I have several classes available in my online store, and was definitely listening to your videos on creating courses and/or memberships. I thinking I'm leaning more memberships. I can probably bring those classes over into a course and /or membership site. My husband and I already do Free Live TH-cam videos but eventually we would like to start doing those lives in a membership site. Would you recommend a lifetime often as well. I would be scared of this option because if it doesn't work out or if we decide to go in another direction those ppl have already paid for a lifetime of content... what are your thoughts?
Great advice!! We are building a community now, but our members are job seekers and not always keen on wanting others to know who they are. Any advice on how to build a community membership while still maintaining confidentiality? Thank you!!!!!
Good stuff, thanks Graham. I didn't think about how having 2 options (monthly/yearly) create such a shift in the potential client, thanks for this tip. Do you have thoughts on Patreon?
Great call outs man! Definitely like the membership model, such a tried and true method for passive income. I wanted to ask about content frequency when running a membership. How frequently do you put out new content and how can you set it apart from your regular free content? Just some questions that I had while watching this. Thanks again.
Great question. I typically release one core piece of content each month. However I try to have something to email out about each week. Sometimes it's the live coaching call. Sometimes it's a bonus video I uploaded. Sometimes it's an interesting conversation happening in the community I want to point them to, and sometimes it's a member win that I want to share.
Graham: Could you talk about folks like me who are just launching a TH-cam channel or course or membership community (all three, really), and viewers see 7 views, some course members are going to be the first ones in, there is no community because someone has to be the first member. And Facebook Lives! What if there is only one person in the room? Am I the only one worried about the crickets, about the atmospherics of being so small? KZ
You talked about naming. I have a studio that I run where I produce, record, mix and master local Houston songwriters and rappers. I am going to start a mixing only business. The name of the studio I run is One Fifty Music. I was wondering if you thought it would be best to do "One Fifty Mix.com" or my name JoshWalkerMix.com Or something like that.
Hey Graham!!! I'm Brittany Bruce and I'm a photography educator for beginners. I wanted to get your thoughts on my membership site! I recently started a new membership site called Photoflix which is the "Netflix for Photographers" for our members to binge-watch monthly content from dozens of photography educators around the US from the comfort of their couch. We currently have 20 contributors and 371 members after 3 weeks. We haven't officially launched the site to anyone but my course students. Love the idea on annual subscription option which I will implement! We are set up in Kajabi and looking to offer our contributors affiliate benefits for each member they bring in. Does Kajabi have the capacity to keep track of each Contributor's affiliate members and distribute monthly payouts?
Wow Brittany! 371 members in 3 weeks is amazing. Great work! So Kajabi (on the middle and upper plans) has an affiliate program that gives your affiliates their own backend with their custom links and sales tracking. It keeps track of everything but you still have to do the payouts via Paypal.
Thanks for this. I use Patreon for membership, and although it's possible for people to post comments on all my blog posts, the community aspect is really lacking. I release a song a month and share my songwriting process as well as sharing artwork and stories behind my work. But barely anyone comments on what I do. I created a Facebook group because I heard people were struggling with logging in to Patreon, but not all my Patreon members are on Facebook, so it doesn't feel quite fair...then recently I also made a WhatsApp group just to try to connect more. I would LOVE more of a community with my members, but I guess my people are just really quiet?? I mean I only have 38 right now...but still, I want to do my very best with those 38 people. Any ideas on how to develop community on your membership? I'm also always nervous that I'm bugging people....
From what I've heard from other creators, most patreon members will pay for a membership to support you, but they usually aren't interested in viewing content on patreon. Have you tried discord?
I spent the past 3 months testing the membership model and it absolutely sucked. Honestly, its such a shit model. People doing one month and cancelling. Missed payments, failed payments......and each month you end up juggling kittens to try and keep people "entertained" so they dont leave, all the while making a few hundred dollars at a time. Its such a stupid business model.
I have 600 people in my private WhatsApp group. I am thinking of launching a course with them but my question to you is. Is it wise to Crete a membership instead now that I already have 600 loyal followers and members all gotten from TikTok. They have been paying for my workshops on the tool I teach. Can I convey them into paid membership??

I'm a tutor. Does this membership community work for community for "kids" under 18? Hmmm...

Great video!! Just subscribed 😌 How do you tie in new members without repeating material that existing members have already heard?
I love your tag line. My plan is to launch a membership site soon along with the course.
Excellent information. I really enjoyed the video!
Thanks Graham, that helped!
Getting ready to launch my membership site your information is so useful thanks again for Graham!
Fantastic!

You can - but it’s nice to have some kind of bonus training in there from the beginning. Even if it’s not a full blown course. Just something
Great video, with lots of tips that will help as im looking at starting an Membership Site for my Content and Followers

Great question. I'm personally not a fan of the "lifetime" membership option. I would stick to monthly or annual.
@@GrahamCochrane Thank you! I will focus on the mini coursed for now. Thank you for the 5day funnel
Great advice!! We are building a community now, but our members are job seekers and not always keen on wanting others to know who they are. Any advice on how to build a community membership while still maintaining confidentiality? Thank you!!!!!
Interesting. If that's true then you could encourage everyone to just use fake avatars and names.
@@GrahamCochrane yes, we thought about that and are working on a remedy. Thank you so much!!
100% Community is key - especially these days.
Great content and stroll through history!

Yes it was!

Glad it was helpful! Yeah - Patreon can be a great option if you don't intend to sell your own products and just want to make content.

Graham Cochrane Nice, I’m gonna take these points into account as I develop mine. Thanks again.
So nice to be among the first ones to view this video!
Thanks for watching!
Very valuable info
Would be awesome to watch a video about Sales Tax & Online Courses. When to pay VAT due to EU customers, etc
Great stuff

Offer it as consulting or private lesson. You will gain experience and hear from your audience.

Membership sites are not passive income. You have to constantly create content.
