@mosimms79 I love Daniel Greene lol love how he popped in. I haven’t read his books yet but would love to!!!! Thanks for a chance. You’re awesome Gavin!!!
The Daniel popup part was so funny loved it. 😂 Also so me if my cats make noise I need to check if they are oke and if they are oke I'll grumble a bit to the wall, about them making noise and making me jump etc. 😂
The Andy Weir set broke my heart with the price because I adored those books and special editions of that collection just don't exist anywhere else. It deserves them allllll
Michael Ende's last name sounds more like end-uh ^^ I wish Momo would be getting as much recognition as The Neverending Story because it's my favorite book of his and outside of Germany seriously underrated :((
I am so excited that you want to read The Neverending Story, it is one of my favourite books ever! Momo is another beautiful book from the same author. And Happy belated birthday, Gavin! We are birthday twins! 😊
I have not read To Gaze Upon Wicked Gods but I've seen several in depth reviews about it and I would encourage you to familiarise yourself with the historical context and the very real story of Unit 731 before reading it, so you can properly judge for yourself how you feel about it! I would also very much recommend catherineannechiang's video on it, for anyone who has already read it/doesn't want to read it.
Omg i cannot wait for my Neon Ghost to arrive from thr Kickstarter, good luck to all entering the giveaway. I also need to start skipping and/or cancelling a few of my book boxes but FOMO is real!
I've lived in a place that was slowly sucking the life out of me and I'm still not at the end of the moving journey but I'm at a temporary place and man, what a change for my mental health! I really hope you'll manage a move. Though please please look into making a catio. I have a balcony with a net and my cats are happy and safe. Your cats will be able to escape from the garden with just a fence.
Cloud Atlas is really really good, i read it about a decade ago and I think about it all the time. It's about a soul going through the ages and the different experiences of that soul, identified by a uniquely shaped birthmark, I believe a star. The only thing I will say is that the middle section of the book is a bit of a push because the language is weird/hard because of all the apostrophes used and just the language in general. But if you stick with it, it's really rewarding.
To Gaze Upon Wicked Gods really toed the line on colonizer romance for me. There were times when it didn't feel that way, and then there were other times that it did feel that way. And by the ending? Yikes. Once you know what he's been doing for his family, then it's just so hard to see it as anything else. He would need a serious redemption arc for him to be acceptable, and even then - it doesn't change the aftertaste once you're done reading the book.
I just got Tempest and Tea and can't wait to get into it! If you like cozy kind of books, Nancy Warren's "Vampire Knitting Club" is so cute. I've never liked mystery books really, but these are good, not too long, and cozy with vampires lol. I just finished the Argonaut's Lass by Jim Butcher, a sci-fi, steampunkish, fantasy series. A great read, but quite hefty.
Beastly beauty is one we have in common! Amy McCaw is so lovely and I really enjoyed the first book in the mina series! Is it just me or are the skandar books coming out so fast? I really enjoyed book 1 so far. And yay for beautiful classics :) Those are gorgeous. That is such a gorgeous edition of the martian D: Hopefully you'll like evocation more... I am also on the fence on cosy fantasy as well. I think my recommendation for you is to listen to the audio of can't spell treason without tea.
If you're looking for a horror sub box Twisted Retreat is really neat they have just book or book + merch options. The editions are all so pretty, and they pick a lot of dif types of horror since the genre is so expansive. Obvi after the new house thing is sorted, also good luck on the hunt may you find the perfect fit!!!!
You should do one of those read it or unhaul it videos to unhaul and sell some books to fund the new house! Maybe reading special editions you don’t have high hopes for ect.
First time I'm seeing a special edition of The Martian and it's STUNNING omg. 😍 devastated to have missed that. Also excited for the last murder at the end of the world
1.5 stars for Murder Road? Woooooow. I read it last week and was surprised by how much I liked it because of the reviews I've heard so far. Maybe I read a different book. It's a nice lie I can tell myself. I do agree with the Evernight sub box though. I also read The Invocations which I enjoyed but it wasn't super scary or anything, which is what I thought the box was supposed to be. That being said, I'm sad I didn't have the box so I could get that special edition because she is STUNNING. Like, I'll keep an okay book if she has a pretty cover. Because as always, book reading and book collecting are two different hobbies. I wish you all the best for saving up money and new home hunting! We'd love to see you in a new place with a garden for the kitties!
@@ReadwithStefani thank you 😊 I don’t have a book from either of these collections but they a publishing the worst witch later this year and have a few others I would like to read but if they don’t hold up I don’t know if I want to spent the money 😊
I decided to rewrite this comment lol. I've read similar reviews and seen some interesting conversations about To Gaze Upon Wicked Gods. It definitely seems like a conversation worth having about romances like this. Since I haven't finished the book yet, I can't give my personal opinions on it. However, I do think I would like to read a historical account of the atrocities that are referenced in both this book and the Poppy Wars. I do have some knowledge about that time period in Chinese history, but I feel like my knowledge is lacking to have a really thorough conversation about it (especially being someone who is not ethnically Chinese). Since I have the book from Illumicrate, I do think I will finish it so I can have a better opinion (and decide if I would want to continue the series). But I am also going to do some deep diving to find some non-fiction about the time period. Anyway, long post... but here's my insta handle @zeccola
If you're wanting more sci fi (that your library is likely to have seeing as there's no hauling allowed) check out anything from Emily St. John Mandel. Sea of Tranquility is a time travel book that's kinda structured like concentric rings where 5 people in 5 different times have the same really weird thing happen to them that lasts under a minute and then you as the reader are trying to piece together wtf the weird thing is. Staion 11 is about a post pandemic world and people trying to survive and rebuild. The Glass Hotel is definitely the least sci fo of them all and honestly isn't as good, but all three books are kinda linked but not really (kinda in a similar way to the Taylor Jenkins Reid books) and if you read the other 2 you might be interested
I just finished this phenomenal new book of fairy tales entitled Sillies, Fancies, and Trifles - it was phenomenal and I think you'd love it. It would go with the lovely recommendations here. Keep up the beautiful videos :)
I've spent the last couple of years very in the "buying books and reading books are two different hobbies" mindset, but I'm starting to run out of room in my house for new books! Now, I'm trying to be intentional with what I'm buying, and monthly bookboxes are losing their appeal for me, might be cancelling my subscription soon 🫤
i read molly x. chang's book and i'm chinese-vietnamese. non-spoiler short of it is that it's a betrayal of loved ones, countryman, and self. it's also really poorly written. i recommend watching catherine anne chiang's review of it (a chinese-american booktuber).
I can finally exhale knowing this isn’t the final book haul forever LOL Might as well enter the giveaway! @lettersfromlilly 💕✨ Debating to get my hands on the warm hands of ghosts & hoping To gaze upon wicked Gods is really good! Just got my copy in the mail earlier this week 🤞
To Gaze Upon Wicked God's isn't a colonizer romance. I think some people read the synopsis and assumed and wrote reviews on that. The author had to come out and spoil her book to show that it wasn't colonizer. I also believe she was one of the ones that was attacked in the cat corrian drama so she's been through it. My Instagram is @carolinejane42
I read the ARC and had started it before that started circulating. How can it be anything else? The beginning part was fine, but as you got to know his role more (within a certain building of science, for instance) it screams problematic. At the end of the day, he causes harm to the local people with the hope of saving his own people.
it's worth noting that the author and marketing team did an EXTREME pivot after the backlash. but having read the book and seen her original promotion it's very difficult to believe the new angle they're promoting or to dismiss the reviewers calling it a colonizer romance. it's supposed to be "zutara," the MC pays more attention to her feelings about his eye color than Unit 731 crimes, and there's a POV chapter at the end that's kind of unhinged and angling for a redemption arc. check out mynameismarines and/or catherineannechiang's review for some very thorough and fair BIPOC reviews that actually read the book (yes, she was part of the corrain drama. but that doesn't excuse how problematic and poorly written TGUWG is)

To Gaze Upon Wicked Gods was a really choppy, repetitive, hand-holding writing style that I didn't vibe with at all. I think if the goal was not to create a colonizer romance, then the writing/editing/marketing really failed here; and the POV chapter toward the end seems in direct contrast with the new marketing they've pivoted to.
