Great development of Wallace’s character, you get to see how innocent of a person he is

It's funny how so many people start defending drunk driving when it's Rawls going after McNulty.

just a correction.. D might not have been as emotional as Wallace when seeing the death that followed their respective actions, but make no mistake- D was also distressed that witness was killed. you may have misinterpreted his facial expressions in that scene.

4:20 I'd say D'angelo looked contemplative, and uneasy when he saw the dead body of Gant at the end of episode one.

the guy playing Bubbles is so good, probably my favorite performance. apparently Lance Reddick initially auditioned for the character which is crazy to imagine now since Daniels is the polar opposite lol

They were both cast absolutely perfectly. But, if you watch Oz. Lance actually does a pretty decent criminal/addict too!

One thing you'll get to love about this show is just how well realised almost each and everyone of the characters is in this show, which is no small task when you consider that there are over 262 named characters that appear in at least one episode across all 60 episodes.

I find it interesting that Bodie calls Stinkum to find out why the Pit is dead, not his actual boss D'Angelo. Goes to show how much Bodie respects D I guess.

Failing institutions in an urban environment. The systemic issues often trump human agency. Even in a dysfunctional police department, a rare good case gets derailed by corruption and a lack of political will.

If you're already feeling sorry for the characters, wait til you watch the show creator's miniseries "The Corner" that was before this on the same topic and city. That will _wreck_ you. I'd already seen The Wire several times through when I watched that, and it got to me.

Still catching up on your reacts so I'm a couple episodes behind, but yeah, you're in rhe ballpark by assuming that the show wants you to see the people on the drug side of things as people, and humanise them . David Simon, the showrunner and one of the main writers, used to describe the show as being about how people are worth less. And you will see both what he means and howbthe show fights against that as it goes on.
There's alao lots of parallels being drawn all the time, and a good one is Dee and Daniels. They're both good supervisors and lieutenants, ready to protect those in their care. What Dee did to Cass might have made him look like an asshole, but he probably saved her life right there, especially because she only stole because of Stringer's plan to begin with. Both worlds are disfunctional and quite inconsiderate to those living at its bottom.

My favorite part is at the beginning when that wire is just wiring things together, and you know it's about to go down, and sure enough, the electrical company wireman shows up, and he's like, "it's wiring time!!!" and everybody just starts wiring all over the place! Bravo Nolan. U U U U

On a more sober note, and in response to the question in the video, yes, I can sympathize with the characters. In fact, I was arrested for trafficking in '06.

Hey Elie, I'm loving your reaction to the series so far! I'm sure I'll be seeing the rest of them over the next while 😃
As far as your question around 8:30 regarding how things might have been different if someone had been in the office to notice the calls, they mention that the taps are for specific notable people and their pagers (D, Stringer, Wee-Bey etc.) and unless the police can physically confirm that they are the ones taking the call, the call can't be monitored. This is why you sometimes see members of the force up on the roof near the Pit calling in to say that even though it might be pretty obvious who's about to be on the phone since it was D's pager that was pinged, it is in fact D who then went to the payphone to make a call.
Basically they'd have needed someone out on shift that night monitoring the payphones to even be able to listen in to those calls, and without someone doing that there's no point even having someone sitting in the office on the wire!
Edit: Annnd of course Kima explains it 1 minute later in to the video 🤣

You doing a good job. As someone who grew up in a similar environment. People often times don't emphasize with us. Its easier to call them criminals and say they choose this life. What most dont understand is its a lack of options that lead to bad choices. You will see in later seasons. The 4th season is my personal favorite .
The show is hreat to me because unlike most cop shows. It shows you both sides. The criminals get character development they dont always protray them as bad 9r objectively evil. And the cops arent always shown to be these good guys who just want to catch bad guys.
People will never have to make the choices ive had to make because they never was born into a situation where these choices where the only ones available to them.
You will see that this show constantly explores this. Its not necessarily a race thing. Hurk and pres aren't racist but ao far you've seen them commit multiple instances of police brutality. But you also see them have moments like with herc and bodies grandmother. It shows that even tho he's constantly beating on people. He still has some respect for this old lady and he apologized for his language. This is contrasted by carv and the other black officer looking confused on why he would talk to her. When you would think someone like herc wouldn't care and that black officers would be more understanding.
From my personal experience. A black cop can be worse than a racist whote cop because they not only will be even more unreasonable. Because they are black they will not have to deal witb any racist accusations.
My veiw on this is that as a black cop. You almost have to prove yourself. You have to show you dont show favorites. These leads them to being even more harsh then a white cop

Oh wow was not expecting another reaction so soon. Love to see it. This episode was a great showcase for Daniels because he's decided to put doing the right thing over his career and appeasing the bosses. Interestingly enough both Daniels' and D'Angelo's story arcs parallel each other within their respective institutions. I sympathized with characters like D'Angelo and Wallace heavily cause I personally know/knew plenty of individuals like them. Kids like Wallace who aren't fully aware of how serious the game truly is but it is literally all that they know and people like D'Angelo who are more tied to the game due to family and wouldn't have been a part of the drug world otherwise. D'Angelo puts on fronts and appearances (which is why sometimes the show focuses on him carefully choosing what he wants to wear) and is trying to project a certain image of himself. His relationship with Wallace is definitely a highlight. On my first ever watch I was constantly rooting back and forth between The Barksdales and the detail although highkey more for my Barksdales than the cops...but still the cops POV did open my eyes to their world a lot more because there are good cops like Bunk, McNulty, Kima and Daniels who do genuinely want to do their jobs. Even Prez who did something *very* terrible is showing more to himself with proper guidance. In a lot of ways the cops and the drug dealers are all pretty much products of their respective worlds and institutions. The parallels between the two forces is one of the best things about Season 1. See you at the next episode sir!

You'll find through the course of The Wire; you'll see Thugs as Saints and Cops as Sinners. This is a show where not everything isn't painted simply as black and white. There are different shades, multiple layers. For me that is the beauty of the show. The complexity of it. This show isn't out to hold your hand but rather teach you in the tale it is trying to tell. In my eyes, this show is much like a visual novel.

I think Kima and McNulty are most interested in Omar as an informant and are mainly being more respectful than sympathetic. I think they saw Brandon's death as an opening and as part of the game that people like Avon & Omar play.

34:05 yeah i feel more sympathetic w criminal world in this show with cops i like just few of them and want them to catch some of the “bad guys” but they’re are not tragic characters so there’s no depth for me and no reason to feel bad for them that’s why i’m not that attached
there are few police officers who are empathetic to these kids and even bad guys like Jimmy for sure one of them even tho his ego is big af and he plays w them i feel he had empathy as well
