    I've been using my FloJet waste pump every week since 2014. Although the maker states the pump works up to 50 feet, I must pump about 100 feet to a sewer drain and it still performs well. It takes about ten minutes to pump out my tanks. Recently, the pump blew its built-in fuse. Turned out that over the years enough hair accumulated around the pump shaft (behind the blades) to bind up the motor. (A pump rebuild kit is available.) To solve that problem, I equipped all the drains in my 5th wheel with hair screens. Note: A macerator pump is not a substitute for a garbage disposal. (Solids like small bits of food or paper towels can jam or damage the pump's impeller.) A pair of hemostats is useful to remove debris from the pump without needing to take it apart. Otherwise, a good product.

    I have that same macerator pump. It is fantastic for being able to dump at my house. I hooked mine up to the trailer batteries through a 2 pin connector.

    I have the same pump and 3/4" hose. I also have a 100 gallon commercial grade water bladder that I place in the bed of my truck. Pump the black tank into it and drive to a dump station once a week when boondocking. Just open the ball valve on the bladder and it all drains through the 3/4" hose into the dump station. Works great.

    I have that same model and mainly use it at home to empty my tanks into the sewer clean out that's about 75 feet away from my driveway, and it works well at that distance. I use my Noco GB70 battery jump box to power it using small battery clips. The only problem I have had with mine was the first time I went to use it when I turned it on it instantly blew a fuse. I found that the impeller had some type of sealant all over it that they used between the motor and housing that had it bound up. After about an hour, I finally got it freed up and working. It looks like yours has a gasket, which may have been an expensive lesson for the manufacturer.

    I have the same pump. I am on my second one now. My problem is the distance I am pumping. I installed a 1 1/2 pvc pipe that runs about 40 feet under the house to the sewer clean-out on the other end of the house. I am using a 5/8 ' hose to that and here is where the problem arises. The hose run is about 35 feet or so. The pump tends to trip the internal thermistor after a few minutes. The more it trips, it seems to shorten the life of the breaker. The shorter the run the better. I would be better off with a 3/4" hose too. My next one will be one of the cheaper ones on Amazon....$70. I can't imagine them being any worse. They are also nice for pumping into remote vault toilets.

    • @LoveYourRV
      @LoveYourRV  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I read in the manual 5/8 is only good for 25 feet max and 3/4 is good for 50 feet max so got the 3/4 inch hose as I think I will need that here and it will be good to have in case I need to dump somewhere else. How do the vault toilet operators feel about use dumping so much so fast into them? I was wondering if they would be upset about it.

    • @WayneTheSeine

      @@LoveYourRV Yep...I need to get a 3/4 " and custom cut it...the shorter the better for sure. I did add a heatsink on mine that I found on Ebay and it certainly helped.

    Aren't solar ports on portable generators usually for input only? You blew my mind using that port.

    • @LoveYourRV
      @LoveYourRV  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      There are various ports used. Generally, I find barrel connectors are used for lower amperage DC power applications and higher amperage port they often use Anderson Powerpole powerwerx.com/anderson-power-powerpole-sb-connectors or XT connectors. amzn.to/3Cl5wEg On the back of the Safari ME box is another set of PowerPole connectors used for the 600W solar input feed. They have a different orientation horizontal versus vertical so you can't accidentally plug into the wrong port. Cheers, Ray

    I have also seen another video review on the FloJet & the concern of it turning off presumably from over heating. Wonder if that's been addressed? If I remember right, the reviewer waited a few minutes for it to cool off & then start up again

    • @LoveYourRV
      @LoveYourRV  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      The manual says not to run it continuously for more than 15 minutes so I guess the motor can get too hot and a temp switch shuts it down. It also says max hose length is 25 feet for 5/8ths and 50 feet for 3/4 inches. I can see people trying to use it with longer hoses and having it shut down sooner or something jamming up the impeller blades making the motor work harder. Hair seems to be an issue as it wraps around the impeller shaft.

    I poor boy’d an old macerater pump off a boat to hook directly on the tank outlet. I use it to pump into a big poo tote in the truck bed when boondocking. Only problem we’ve run into is the need to use more water flushing the toilet. Trying to conserve water leads to the dreaded poo pyramid and poor flow of solids out to the pump.

  • @lakecavanaugh
    @lakecavanaugh 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    Whatever you do, don't run that pump dry. It says you can, but neither it or you will like it. It uses rubber vanes as the pump and if they get hot (running dry) they weld themselves to the side walls of the pump. When you go to start it back up, it will seize the motor and pop the fuse. Each time I use mine, I pour a few tablespoons of vegetable oil into the inlet and use a screwdriver on the end of the motor to give it a few spins to ensure it is not seized and to lube it a bit.
    Inform your better half to NOT ever put anything down the toilet that can't easily be macerated (cleaning wipes, female products etc.) I know- she already knows that. So did mine, but... it happened anyway, several times. Those will wrap themselves around the blade and you have to take it apart to remove it.
    Also, I bought an add-on bayonet gate valve and a 6" clear adaptor to put right in front of the pump. Since 2009 (when I got mine) I have had to remove the pump mid-job 6 or 7 times and that valve saved me a mess. The clear adaptor lets you see what is going into your pump. It's gross, but knowledge is power.
    Don't expect a good flushing action as you get when you dump using your 3" hose. Lots of solids get left behind when the water is gone. After dumping the black tank, I shut off the pump and dump 4 or 5, 5 gallon buckets of water down the toilet to re-float left over solids and then pump those out. Sometimes I have to do this 3 or 4 times to get them all. That is when the clear adaptor comes in handy.
    This is what I do. You do what you are comfortable with.
    I am always super apprehensive when using mine. Also, I had to buy a new one this year as my old one died.
    Good luck!

    Great video, but would love to see it powered by a trolling motor plug (like your Viair) instead of lugging out the power bank every time you need to use it

    • @LoveYourRV
      @LoveYourRV  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      It would work no problem since the VIAIR draws the same or more power. It is rated for max 30 amp versus 20 amp for the macerator. I can always use an adapter Powerpole to Trolling plug if I wanted to use that port but its way on the other side of the rig and at the front. For the few times a year I will need to use the macerator, bringing the power box out isn't a big problem for me. I also makes it convenient to loan to others I may be camped with to use. Cheers, Ray

    I am on my second one. The first lasted 3 gray and black tank clean outs and the motor quit working. I replaced the fuse and still nothing. I tried it on another rv and it didnt work. The tanks emptied in about 10 minutes and when i touched the pump it was not overly warm. My 3/4 hose is no more than 50 feet.I bought another and it has run well for over a year. If this one goes I will find a cheaper one as other people say in your comments.

    • @LoveYourRV
      @LoveYourRV  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That may vary depending on how you are using it. I assume you will be using it with some type of RV to empty the tanks.
      You could run wires to your RV 12V batteries. Here are the recommended wire sizes for different lengths from the manual. Thicker gauge will work better for longer wire runs.
      You could also use the RV metal frame as a negative ground return.
      RECOMMENDED WIRE & FUSE SIZE
      Wire Size for Connection
      Length between Battery & Motor
      1-10 feet 12 gauge
      10-20 feet 10 gauge
      Fuse/breaker 20 amps
      Another method would be to attach alligator clamps to the wire ends and use the battery/alternator of a running vehicle to power the pump.
      Cheers, Ray

I see it on Amazon USA today for $307 and CampingWorld reg $340 on sale $254 RVupgradestore $367 PPLmotorhomes $340. Options in Canada are much more limited so price is higher usually here.

    • @LoveYourRV

      Sounds like you need a more powerful macerator for the job. In this pumps manual, it says longer runs may overheat the motor, They recommend a max of 50 feet. Also, incline plays a factor. The higher the shorter the run can be.
      From the manual "Recommended lengths are based on horizontal discharge. Longer discharge runs create higher resistance and may result in the pump motor overheating."
      What is failing on your pump? have you tried to troubleshoot what quits? Could be just a fuse or something. Or maybe the rubber impeller seizes due to a clog or overheating the fins. Thanks, Ray

      I'll have to dive into this one, tear it apart sometime and see what the problem is that some people are having with them. Seems like a pretty basic device so weird that they can't make it work long term like say a garbage disposal. I wonder if they need much more routine cleaning and maintenance than the instructions indicate. Or if the motor is just underpowered for the task to keep the amperage lower. Cheers, Ray
