It is interesting that you (John) recognized the parasocial market in let’s plays. For someone like me this content reminds me of couch co-play with my friends when I was an adolescent/teen. It was so cool to just play a game (even if it was one player) and just talk through what we were experiencing. I never minded being the spectator when I would play games with friends like this.
Also the one of the reasons I loved watching you is bc all those other big TH-camrs you mentioned would scream and holler and give fake reactions and I always felt you were genuine.
Listening to you talk about your experience with TH-cam and finding that happy medium for what stimulates you makes me really happy. Theres obviously so much pressure to be the “best” and more and more views. But truly being happy and invested in what you’re doing makes the world of a difference in quality of life and motivation. The Gank Fight with Leda and the others is easily my favorite battle of this entire DLC. Even though you don't spend too much time with them, they are very memorable and them being your allies at first makes this fight very emotional. It's like FromSoftware taking the concept from Captain America Civil War and making their own take on it.
Easily one of my favorite moments of the dlc. Honestly, the biggest loss is that if you're not following the story, this fight is a pretty throwaway fight ( because Fromsoft NPC invasion fights are kinda garbage tbh ) But the intent of the characters ( Leda defending Miquella to the point of possibly killing several others, Ansbach trying to get Freta to turn against Leda and failing ) are all easy to miss small touches that add a lot of character.
I'm laughing way too hard at the Messmer impressions making him sound like Snape. Very fitting. The NPC quests in the DLC basically determine who's alive for the little free-for-all battle near the end so oddly enough you want as many as possible dead.
You can actually reduce that gank fight down to 3 people, and have up to 2 additional companions to call in. Leda, Freya,and Dryleaf Dane will always fight you - Moore needs to have his quest finished and talked out of supporting Miquella, and Hornsent needs to fight Messmer and be talked to after to turn his vengeance against Leda and Miquella ( where he presumably dies ) Meanwhile, Ansbach, Ansbach and Thiollier can be convinced to help you. While the fight is easier if there are less NPCs present - it's what I'd call the climax of the dlc ( where former comrades in arms turn against each other for the sake of their conviction ) and is one of the times where killing everyone earlier not only cuts their questline short, it also "hurts" a lot of the coolness factor of seeing them stream in 1 by 1 to help or fight you.
As someone who's been with your channel(s) for over a decade, it's really relaxing to hear you talk about the early days. It's just like listening to an old friend 😊

I'm gonna be honest, I'm like in my mid-twenties, so I'm not one of your earliest subscribers, and I didn't know you when you were HarshlyCritical. I grew up with Pewdiepie, Markiplier and the likes, but I wanted to let you know that I'm happy I stumbled on your account when I was in college (or it could be even earlier tbh, i forgot). Watching Let's Plays were (still unfortunately) my main form of entertainment, as I couldn't really afford to play/buy games back then, and now it's just my preferred way of enjoying a game. You also introduced me to DBD interestingly enough, and I was subbed to you for awhile when I had time to watch your streams (I live in ASEAN). Your voice and sass has accompanied me throughout college, getting my first job, and now a full time corporate slave, and I'm very happy that you're constantly changing your content to suit what you like. The old AVGN videos will always live in a special place for me because I was the one who found AVGN and introduced it to my siblings and we have since grown up with AVGN. The new videos are super hit/miss with me and as he's not as angry as he was back then. I do like him quite a lot as a person though. James has such great knowledge of horror films and a good passion for the things he loves.
Honestly, him toning down the crude, reactionary "humor" is expected of a middle-aged man with kids. He's not that young man anymore. I prefer him being more thoughtful about what he loves than him pretending that an ok game was the worst thing that ever happened to humanity.

Honestly John, I found your channel during the drop of the OG FNAF playthroughs, and after trying out Markiplier and others who came up before you on the search list, I found them EXTREMELY OBNOXIOUS AND INSUFFERABLE. I wanted to enjoy the game not listen to someone screaming every 2 seconds. You not only fit the bill, but you were genuinely entertaining to watch. Thank you for being one of the great few who aren't doing 1 bazillion wacky voices or over the top reactions so that I can see how these games are played instead of being forced to watch an unfunny clown perform.

So funny how many people jumped on calling it the Shadowtree without actually giving it any thought themselves. Erdtree means "earthtree" and erd is pronounced "earth" in the language it's borrowed from... And yet voice acting in the game pronounces it ERDtree, not earthtree. Haligtree is not pronounced "holy tree". So why would scadu be pronounced shadow? I don't think there is any dialogue that pronounces it, but if you ask me it should be pronounced "shadu". It fits with the other two trees being pronounced how they're written(because "sc" can make a sh sound in English) while not being as goofy. In the absence of an official pronunciation though, do whatever you want. But if you're going to leave comments correcting people at least think about what you're saying first.

What has been making me come back to watch every new video you upload for the past +10 years is not even any single one of the games, but the content you create using the games AND your personality. The soul you put into your content is purely amazing, with all the down-to-earth-ness, the humor, the saltiness, all the storytelling you do about your college days and family time. It's like coming back to a friend every day or so and listening to their jokes and stories. I know it's sort of an asymmetric relationship that people build with content creators and it's generally frowned upon, but I think it can be embraced and handled in a healthy way as well.

As someone with generalized anxiety syndrome, here's some advice. You know what helps with stress related illness? Going to a doctor and getting it appropriately diagnosed. It took me a while to internalize it was anxiety instead of something else, but doctors with an educated course of treatment helped. The second thing, try to learn to not second guess "what might have been". They always say hindsight is 20/20, but that's not true if you start to modify that past in your head. There is absolutely zero way to know how things "would have" worked out if you did something different. You may think you can look at others who did take that path, and assume it would happen for you, but there are too many variables. Enjoy the life you have.
I know I'm really late on this and you may not see it but I'm just watching your intro regarding the whole two-handing debacle and I just have to say in your defence: since your character has 80 strength, there is no real benefit to two-handing the ancient meteoric ore greatsword anyway because you will only get an additional 39 AR (attack rating) out of it which isn't worth it in my opinion. However, if you wanted to two-hand it, 54 strength is all you'd need since the game would treat the weapon's AR as if you had 80 strength while one handing it (the sword actually gets slightly more AR 2h with 54 strength than 1h with 80) and this would allow you to put more levels into other stats. Ok, now that I'm done with my little rant, I'll enjoy the video.

@@rintv3675if you don’t complete Freyja’s quest (by giving her Ansbach’s letter), she just stays in the storeroom and won’t turn up at the gank fight.

The soul you put into your content is purely amazing, with all the down-to-earth-ness, the humor, the saltiness, all the storytelling you do about your college days and family time. It's like coming back to a friend every day or so and listening to their jokes and stories. I know it's sort of an asymmetric relationship that people build with content creators and it's generally frowned upon, but I think it can be embraced and handled in a healthy way as well.
I liked when we watched your Amensia Let's Play on stream. Was really fun to see your early days of Let's Plays.
My first Let's Play-er I watched was a guy called Sinuyan. I don't think he does YT anymore but back then he played stuff like Slenderman, the SCP game(s?), One Late Night, etc. Random horror games.

As someone with generalized anxiety syndrome, here's some advice. You know what helps with stress related illness? Going to a doctor and getting it appropriately diagnosed. It took me a while to internalize it was anxiety instead of something else, but doctors with an educated course of treatment helped. The second thing, try to learn to not second guess "what might have been". They always say hindsight is 20/20, but that's not true if you start to modify that past in your head. There is absolutely zero way to know how things "would have" worked out if you did something different. You may think you can look at others who did take that path, and assume it would happen for you, but there are too many variables. Enjoy the life you have.

I know I'm really late on this and you may not see it but I'm just watching your intro regarding the whole two-handing debacle and I just have to say in your defence: since your character has 80 strength, there is no real benefit to two-handing the ancient meteoric ore greatsword anyway because you will only get an additional 39 AR (attack rating) out of it which isn't worth it in my opinion. However, if you wanted to two-hand it, 54 strength is all you'd need since the game would treat the weapon's AR as if you had 80 strength while one handing it (the sword actually gets slightly more AR 2h with 54 strength than 1h with 80) and this would allow you to put more levels into other stats.

I beat the dlc a couple days ago. I felt super empty, afterwards.
I guess I need to finish the rest of my NG+1 base game playthrough... but the ending was pretty abrupt, I felt because the end of the dlc is not the end of the game. Oh, well...
