    Many years ago stationed in the US military in a very cold place I learned to start the vehicle every 12 hours and let it warm up when it was extremely cold out.

    • @NorwegianXplorer
      @NorwegianXplorer  ปีที่แล้ว +11

      Yes, some people even let it run 24 hours a day up here. I know a guy in the Norwegian military that had his snow plow, that he was driving in the service, running for 30 days straight, only stopping the engine for refueling😂

    • @reidcrosby6241
      @reidcrosby6241 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      There are very good diesel heaters that keep water jacket around engine warm, they also heat passenger compartment

    • @Lalunabreeze
      @Lalunabreeze ปีที่แล้ว +5

      US Army Fairbanks, Alaska had circulating heaters,often brought the battery in at night and put it on the charger.
      Oh the good old days😅

      Hi! I love your videos! Hope you're well. On turning off the engine to refuel during the winter... because diesel fuel is combusted through heat and compression, you can let your engine run while you refuel.
      I just hate for you to turn off the heat while you're refueling.😅

      Tusen takk & I did my friend! Yes, it was damn cold, but in Oslo, we didn't get below 22 deg celsius thankfully. Most days it was only minus 3 to 6 deg, so not too bad for me. Other days, only minus 2. One night I went for a late night stroll & was outside until approx 1.30am & it grew deathly cold (as midnight approached), but I didn't care. I was having such fun walking around, then having fun running in the snow & falling over. haha I laughed out loud, I just loved it. My face was as red as a beetroot when I returned to my hotel room & my hands were so frozen, even within leather & woollen lined gloves, that taking more pics outside became impossible & I was very tired by then anyway. I am going back soon, as I want more! lol This time during the warmer months & I will trek farther North this time around, heading back to Lofoten Islands, my ancestral home/region. Norge is absolutely spectacular in all of it's glory! The Winter train ride from Oslo to Bergen was insanely beautiful. I am well aware, that there are numerous other spectacular train journey's too. Next time for me. The snow & ice filled lakes & rivers everywhere, was exactly what I had been very eager to witness. Just beautiful & it was all so very surreal. I felt totally blessed to be there. Everyone was so nice & I felt very much @ home, as Norge is where much of my ancestral roots lay. Sweden was also amazing, very beautiful & the people there, also very kind & polite. Finally, my online name has now changed, as I'm getting in touch with my Irish roots. I took a DNA test & found new & interesting leads. As a Norwegian, I never knew about my Irish roots, but very good to know, as I visited Ireland briefly too & I really fell in love with Dublin & it's friendly, wonderful & humble people.@@NorwegianXplorer

      I should add, that when I left Oslo, there was to be temps of minus 19 to 22 deg, but still, not as cold as what you were experiencing! I don't know where you were located, but in Oslo it didn't get as low as minus 30 deg, although during my train journey, I noticed on the temperature monitor, that it was approx minus 26 to 28 deg outside & in some areas minus 30 as you stated.@@NorwegianXplorer

    Thanks for answering my question about your van when I asked whether it was a all wheel drive…you confirmed it was a front wheel drive. My query is isn’t it a bit risky for one of your fans to try a similar trip with merely a front wheel drive? You are probably great at calculating RISK about driving conditions and whiteouts and drifting snow. I notice you go at a good clip also. So what’s your advice to your fans…..do we carry tire chains? As well as considering ‘all wheel drive? I’ve seen shows similar to yours where a guy was stuck and had to put on chains plus dig a lot to get out! You make it seem so easy …with your experience!

      Thanks for your coment! It is of course a very different thing when you grow up and drive in this weather 6 months a year. I do bring chains in the van but have never had to use them. Good winter tires is the most important thing and is a necessity both with FWD and 4WD, and then you just have to take it easy and be very careful. 4WD will not save you if you loose the grip on the ice, but it will make some situations easier. Bring tire chains and know how to put them on, but most important, have good winter tires. What I am
      scared of in winter driving is ice with water on top, and going down steep inclines and loosing the grip. I try to avoid those situations. The colder it gets the less slippery it is usually.

    There is a lot of snow, it is very beautiful. The sun has risen on the snow. It looks very beautiful when it happens. The inside of your car is also very nice and useful. How is it hot inside the car? Wouldn't it be nice if there was a stove? The stove with a fireplace is small, but the snow is perfect. Where is this place again? Because I'm watching your camp for the first time. I'm from Berlin, Germany. Zeynep is a Turkish woman👍🏻😇🍀🌻

    One small winter motoring tip is to insulate your starter battery if it isn’t already you can make a jacket for it out of the insulation material you put behind radiators in your home, also if possible create an air gap underneath your battery and stop cold from the vehicle body transferring to the battery. Batteries work better when warm, or in your case less cold. 👍🏻🇬🇧 ps really enjoy your videos.

    You can insulate more with a few touches.
    A) block off part of the radiator to allow some cooling but not full blast freezer cooling.
    B) you can spray foam on floor from underneath van
    C) You can lay down a sandwich of foam then plwyood/OSB on top on floor for better insulation at only a cost of some extra floor height.
    D) you can craft translucent window covers of normal, cheap biig-bubble wrap that has two layers: one layer faces flat side to window, bubbles inward, and second layer has flat side inward and bubbles toward first layer of bubbles. This allows light but offers better insulation than a a thin cloth.
    E) This is a bigger job: insulation on engine block and oil pan to retain heat when engine is not running. The radiator will get rid of heat when running.
    F) Duct airflow in engine compartment down out bottom so air blast coming in does not freeze the firewall.
    G) Have a 50 liter drum of coolant for engine that the engine circulates to first before radiator. This is inside living compartment. Insulation blankets on it control how much heat or cold it adds to interior. Thi would have to be presurized unles you uSe propylene glycol-only coolant that requires NO system pressure on engine. I have used it on SIX vehicles like that. Zero pressure. rx7, 2 pickups, Hellcat, others.
    h) Thick fitted foam board pieces to put on windows reduce heat loss.
    But, two main concepts: capture heat from engine coolant into living space and get more detailed and aggressive with insulation.

      Thanks for all the good advise!

    • @exploranator

      @@NorwegianXplorer You are welcome. I like the idea of being able to extend your battery/fuel/fun through careful heat management.
      I have often wondered why Northern-climate adventurers do not have a big tank in the back of their vehicle that is the hot-coolant storage area that they can use insulation and airflow to either retain its heat or distribute it in the vehicle as they want. With propylene gycol-only coolant, it would not even need to be pressurized.
      Imagine an engine and transmission that were well-enough insulated that they took eight hours to cool down. Cold starts would be far easier. The transmission cooler and engine radiator make sure it does not overheat during operation. Also, you do not discard any where near as much heat to the environment. You could even run floor heat with the engine coolant.
      Ah, the potential.
