A Gentle Introduction to z Scores (9-1)

- A z score tells you how far a raw score deviates from the mean when measured in standard deviation units. There are two parts to a z score: the number and a sign. The sign tells you whether the z score is above or below the mean. The number tells distance between the score and mean in terms of standard deviation. Regardless of the sign, the number indicates exactly the same distance. Two important rules: (a) always include both the sign and the number, and (b) round to two decimal places, and include the leading zero if less than 1.
