    How does a country deepen its relationship and do business with China without risking retaliation by the US and its allies? How can a nation protect its territorial claims in the South China Sea yet maintain a delicate balancing act with its neighbours with their own views and claims? Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim discusses these issues and more, including his deep anguish over the Israel-Gaza war, in this episode of Talking Post with Yonden Lhatoo.

    Malaysia has traded with China for more than 600 years, dating back to the Malacca Sultanate (1400-1511) when the Malacca Sultans had friendly relations with the Ming Emperors. This was to the extent that one of the Ming Emperors sent his daughter, Hang Li Po, to marry Sultan Mansur Shah of the Malacca Sultanate. However, the Malacca Sultanate fell to Imperialist Western invaders and colonialists, first the Portuguese, then the Dutch, and the British. So, if history has anything to teach Malaysians, it is to be careful of Western countries for their avarice! China has never conquered and colonised Malacca or even Malaysia like the Westerners did.
    “White man speaks with a forked tongue”, as the Native Americans found out to their cost! At least Malaysians still have their country and independence after kicking out the foreign Western Colonialists. However, the Native Americans can't say the same for their lands and country.
    "In the fifteenth century, when European settlers began to arrive in North America, the continent was richly populated with Native American communities. Hundreds of thousands of people lived in a wide range of environments from shore to shore, each community or nation with its own distinct culture. The centuries that followed the arrival of Europeans were years of tremendous upheaval, as the expansion of settler territory and the founding and growth of the United States resulted in Native American communities being moved, renamed, combined, dispersed, and, in some cases, destroyed.
    These dislocations and changes took place across many centuries, and each individual episode was marked by its own set of unique circumstances, from public negotiations and careful planning to subterfuge and deceit; from declarations of friendship to calls for genocide; from disease, starvation, and bloodshed to perseverance, resistance, and hope in the face of persecution. But all were driven by the relentless expansion of European settlement and U.S. territory, and by U.S. government policies that relegated the independence and well-being of Native Americans to secondary status, if that." I get the sentiment, and the whole deal about the long trade relationship of Malacca and China. However, the story of Hang Li Po, Hang Tuah ... and all the other "Hang's", and well as the many stories from the "Malay Annals" has since been come into question, since there are no corroborative entries in the archives of the Mings nor Portuguese. But yeah, there's been long relationship between China and the Malay straits. Just this whole idea of the mighty Ming Dynasty sending a "princess" to be married is in question.

    My only friendly advice to Malaysia is be vigilant. Philippines was just like today's Malaysia under Duterte admin remember? Duterte even favor China over US (if I'm not wrong Duterte even curse Obama in a press conference) however the strategy to be friend with China was futile. China cannot be trusted as well as USA. China pledges a lot of projects to the Philippines, in return Philippines under Duterte will not fight for their rights in West Philippines Sea (if I remember correctly, Duterte let China built military bases in South China Sea during pandemic). However, those pledges were just broken promises. They never happened, most of the projects were cancelled. China is just like USA. These superpower countries, why not fight on their own lands? Why would they choose ASEAN lands and seas for their own greedy ambitions?

    • @stephaniejaboh8929
      @stephaniejaboh8929 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      but we also have to look at the differences. The Phillipines have always been in US grip for far too long that trying to back up a little may be viewed by the US as a huge threat. They will never let the Phillipines go. The Phillipines and Taiwan is important to the US to secure their base for war in case china-us war ever happens. This way, US soil is safe but at the cost of Phillipines and Taiwan security. Malaysia have always been vocal about the US, more so during Mahathir days. He was on record condemning the US for many years. When compared to Mahathir eapecially, Anwar is still much more reserved in his critism against the US. Still, Mahathir was the PM of Malaysia from 1981 till 2003 when he stepped down. He once again became the PM in 2018 before he stepped down in 2020 amid political crisis. Malaysia once rejected the air surveilance project to be based in Malaysia and manned by US military, proposed by the US government during Obama administration. Malaysia didnt want to have anything to do with it because it is pretty obvious who their target was. So, this is not the first time Malaysia is vocal and transparent about their stand with the US government. Certainly not the first Malaysian leader to do it. I do have to agree that, Malaysia needs to be aware and cautious when it comes to the US. They have proved themselves indeed deadlier than China.

    Furthermore, we have about 50% of the world’s wealth but only 6.3% of its population. This disparity is particularly great as between ourselves and the peoples of Asia. In this situation, we cannot fail to be the object of envy and resentment. Our real task in the coming period is to devise a pattern of relationships which will permit us to maintain this position of disparity without positive detriment to our national security. ... that Japan and the Philippines will be found to be the corner-stones of such a Pacific security system and that if we can contrive to retain effective control over these areas there can be no serious threat to our security from the East within our time.
    Taiwan was added to the Pacific security system after Chiang's army retreated to the island of Taiwan in 1949. South Korea was added after the Korean War in 1953. The attempt with Vietnam, Laos, and Cambodia was abandoned in 1975.
