Writing on my wifes facebook page hear i go, my first ever punk concert great support from subway sect, buzzcocks were fantastic i loved mcr bands inc my favourite joy division who i saw supporting buzzcocks the year after i must have seen them over 12 times including my last time with my youngest son cam at uppermill our nearest town to mossley and they didnt disappoint rip to one of the finest vocalist/lyricists of punk music ❤
Great sound straight off the board. I'm a yank, but I saw the Buzzcocks on their first U.S. tour. The support act was Gang of Four and that September 1980 concert stands out as the very first time my friends and I felt connected with what was happening in England. Filthy small club called Mother's ...by the end of the sets the dancefloor was soaked with beer and a few inches deep in broken bottles. I was standing next to Andy Gill from Gang of Four watching Pete Shelley lead the Buzzcocks through their set. Magic. Sweaty. Loud. Fun. Beautiful. Thank you Pete Shelley. Thank you Andy Gill. You have made our lives better.
Skimming through my vids, it looks like I do have the Buzzcocks show at Mother's in Chicago, but dated September 9, 1979. I believe they only ran in the northeast US in 1980, and more towards thanksgiving time. Could this be the show you were at? th-cam.com/video/VpAz9XAKe6k/w-d-xo.html
@@FullmetalArchivist You've got it right. Because in September of 1979 the only record by Gang of Four we could get our hands on in the States was the single on "Fast Product" Records, Damaged Goods, Love Like Anthrax and Armalite Rifle. By 1980 they had an LP and more available. Wow it's a great clean recording and I can hear some of my pals being loud and stupid in the crowd. THIS WAS A BREAKTHROUGH EVENT FOR WHICH I HAD NO IDEA EXISTED A RECORDING. Thank you so much, Fullmetal Archivist.
I saw Buzzcocks on their first two full U.S. tours - definitely September and then December 1979. We got so many English bands late in their early careers, especially on the West Coast. Buzzcocks, The Clash, Siouxsie and The Banshees etc. all were around for 3 years before they finally made it over to our shores. It was really frustrating as a fan.
Boy were they ever a phenomenal live band! I'm so fortunate to have seen them at various stages during their career but, not quite this early. They were a magnificent pop band but, their music was a lot more complex and varied than merely pop/love songs...the Krautrock and, even prog elements are outstanding and, what a tremendous rhythm section! John Maher, entirely self taught was all of 18 years old here! Having only begun playing drums not long before joining Buzzcocks in 1976 whoah
Amazing that in this day and age when EVERYONE has access to this incredible music, it's still very much "underground". That's both surprising and refreshing, in a way. Thanks a million for one of the best live shows on the Tube!
Feeling like I'm sixteen again. Went to see them with Joy Division supporting a year after this in November 1979. What a great band. This period and it's music certainly defined me. Feel the same now as I felt then (and I was actually 16 in 1979!). RIP Pete - you will be missed but not forgotten.
They were so incredible! Pete was such an amazing songwriter! I never get tired of listening to Buzzcocks. I'm grateful I saw them twice before Pete died.
THIS IS FUCKING MAGIC❤ Thank you so much for this. I am transported back to the very beginning of what Punk was, to me and my brothers, and my mates. Nearly 60, and still have that energy to just go Fucking mad to this........
I saw the Go-Go's open for the Buzzcocks before those ladies went big, it was at Orin Tucker's Ball Room in Hollywood. I also saw the Buzzzcocks with the Cramps, Clash, X, and Los Lobos. And then at House of Blues 2013
@TheBeatnikbandito Your memory’s failing you. The Alleycats and The Zippers opened for Buzzcocks at Orrin Tucker’s Stardust Ballroom on December 12th 1979, not The Go-Go’s. I was there. John Maher bought two baseball bats that afternoon and demolished his kit at the end of the show.
♡Buzzcocks♡ Always remind of pure bliss in luv. What a beautiful recording, brought tears to my eyes-that sound, you could close your eyes and almost feel there (!). I got to see them with the Avengers in Orange County here less than 7 years ago...was a bucket list achievement, if ever was. Spectacular recording and wonderfully shared thanx so much (understatement ), really cheers me up too. Don't think I'll ever stop loving this blessed music. All the best to you mate, great posts....☆☆☆☆☆
It's hard to fathom this now, but only 18 months separate the first three monumental Buzzcocks albums. This show was about 5 weeks after the release of their second, "Love Bites". They totally nail the songs and slay the hometown crowd here.
The Buzzcocks were such an inspiration to so man6 other bands. The wrote catchy Punk Rock pop songs that are as fresh today as they ever were. Even when Howard left they just got better with Pete on lead vocals.
Got this feeling right now Jake as I listen. Again again again. One of my all time favourite punk bands. Along with the DAMNED, Stranglers , Pistols and hundreds of others 😂
Agree - that one is absolutely stunning but I also love fiction romance and moving away from the pulse beat so it’s hard for me to chose but those three are probably my faves.
That was the following year. On this tour, they were supported by the Slits. Oh, and Joy Division played Buzzcocks off the stage in Manchester in October 1979. I know. I was there.
Checked that. There was in fact a later gig on the 12th of November also at the Apollo with Subway Sect, which was the one I went to. This early one must have been part of the Beating Hearts tour with the Slits. I remember Shelley complained about the new PA and amps at the later one I went to. They had just got the new sound system, which kept cutting out. Diggle kept kicking the preamps to try and make them work. They played exactly the same set and other than the odd cut out in between songs sounded just as good as this performance.
I can't believe this is live. Absolutely incredible performance.
First gig I went to..
Peak Buzzcocks this, should have been released on vinyl!
Agree , I think this , along with I don’t mind , promises , breakdown , and harmony in my head are their best songs !
"Nostalgia" is fantastic!
Nostalgia for an age that is here and now in 2021. Buzzcocks forever.

gobsmacked fucking floored
what a privilege to have been alive and, better, cognizant of bands like these at the very time
Gold from start to finish ❤️ RIP Pete Shelley

whoah
Man gotta say one of the best concerts on TH-cam - really perfectly recorded and not a duffer song in the whole set! Astoundingly great!

RIP to Ian Curtis as well
Lucky you. Never got to see my ultimate heroes, Joy Division ❤ But both bands, absolutely dear to my heart ❤
Was at the very same gig oh to be 16 again !!!
Joy Division & The Buzzcocks. That's probably the best concert in 4o years. And there's a Fac video of the JD Apollo show.
Best British Punk band EVER!!!!!
Happy Travels, Pete. Thanks for making great tunes. RIP.
World is a bit worse off without him.
Dave. I went to the Albert Hall tribute show for Pete ❤ What an incredible evening. Never forgotten ❤❤
Yes I was there aged 15. The seats were trashed. The sound remarkably good, almost like the record.
They were so incredible! Pete was such an amazing songwriter! I never get tired of listening to Buzzcocks. I'm grateful I saw them twice before Pete died.
Absolutely brilliant.
Great drumming, great band. And a great frontman too. RIP Pete
He was still at school when he joined the buzzcocks, went on tour with them in the summer, then went back to do his A levels.
... the drummer
@@richardmorton4762 cool...he was already a professional
I was there. Oh happy days.
Blown away ❤
51:05 ever fallen In love one of my favourite buzzcocks song. My favourite being boredom.
I was at this concert. Never knew there was a recording of it. Takes me back!!!
Same here great days
Me too. It was the bits about them having to pay for broken chairs and not standing on them or throwing them that made me realise.
could you imagine if this was on video . EPIC !
This was a great show. Peak of their powers.
THIS IS FUCKING MAGIC❤ Thank you so much for this. I am transported back to the very beginning of what Punk was, to me and my brothers, and my mates. Nearly 60, and still have that energy to just go Fucking mad to this........
Big Thank You for this great concert !
I was there………….. thank you…
Me too
I have this live concert on a c.d.in a rare live box set I bought years ago @ Amoeba Records in Hollywood! Brilliant Concert! Brilliant Band!
It'd be great if you could upload at 1080p ;)
How can a get a copy of this??
Wow!!! I would be REALLY interested in a recording of this .....❤
Great stereo crowd recordings- totally captures the vibes.
I saw this tour a day or so earlier at Bristol Colston Hall, my first gig.
I saw the Go-Go's open for the Buzzcocks before those ladies went big, it was at Orin Tucker's Ball Room in Hollywood. I also saw the Buzzzcocks with the Cramps, Clash, X, and Los Lobos. And then at House of Blues 2013

Man that’s a great album and they DO nail every single song from it!
beautiful punk band

FUCK ME WHAT A SET!!!
Great quality recording! Thank you!
A marvellous band!
Real World...what an intro!!
UNREAL
Nothing Left is the best song they ever wrote. It may be THE best song ever written........

Agree - that one is absolutely stunning but I also love fiction romance and moving away from the pulse beat so it’s hard for me to chose but those three are probably my faves.
Nice one, thanks, it still sounds fresh. A much more cheerful band than Joy Division who they shared the bill with for two nights.
That was the following year. On this tour, they were supported by the Slits. Oh, and Joy Division played Buzzcocks off the stage in Manchester in October 1979. I know. I was there.
Hi Nigel I was at this gig I think and recall Subway Sect played at the Manchester Apollo gig.

Unbelievably great! How do you get a machine to function that gloriously live! All in synch and sublimely rockin!
Great Drummer, and he wasn't very old. Should have made the effort to see them live more..
Didn't know they did a concert for me, on my tenth birthday. P.S. Commercial for prostate medicine before Autonomy. Yeah!
