this is visible even in games, the importance of ur starting maps. in civ games, if ur start location sucks aka no rivers, no natural resources, lots of mountains & archepalagos, ud be inclined to restart because ur poor start location aka 'geography' renders ur competitve prospect in the game almost null.
in medieval total war, the choice u make with ur faction has their own start location, like venice in venice & with access to the whole mediterranian seas. so ure incentivized to immediately build ports & merchant wharfs to immediately kickstart the sea trade & overtime if u are able to build a strong navy & good enough garrison to protect venice, ud be flowing in giant sea of greens. on the flip side if u start as norway, ur north territories r less fertile & more mountainous & have less places to trade by sea. ud be inclined to expand out of ur starting location immediately to maybe great britain & into holy roman empire to take advantage of the riches either in building good farmland in holy roman empire or lots of sea trade in great britain.
