I disagree, I think the original ending was amazing. The way I see it "Gavin" is dead and gone. The new guy is a completely new person. Ending scene also ties in great with the end song.

I think that was the intention to make a 2nd part which is why Gavin lived but it never happened. Personally I prefer this ending more as it's darker and uncertain. Either way still a good movie.

If a sequel were made, in a way the Steve, his GF will go out to find Gavin, learnin there's another batch of blue ribbons. They'll expose the truth about the experiment. But it's just what if, what if.
I was 2 back in 1998 when this came out. I rented this and watched it with my mum yesterday. I just learned about this ending and we both agreed that we preferred this one. I wish they had used this.
Why didn't the studio go with this ending instead? This completed Galvin's character arch. You can tell the old Galvin was still in there fighting his blue ribbon self. Would have bern the most emotional part of the whole film.
The director and some who worked on the movie explained that the producers felt the movie was too long so there were A TON of edits made to the finished product that we saw in the theatrical release. The producers felt the movie would be too long to keep a teen's attention without the cuts that were made. This movie was also made at a time when school shootings were becoming more and more common and it was thought by some that this type of ending was too violent. Disturbing Behavior was released in July 1998. There were about 12 different fatal middle and high school shootings throughout the 1997-1998 academic school year. That was the pre-Columbine-era in which it was thought that violence in movies, certain types of music and video games were at least contributing factors to the violent acts that were becoming more and more commonplace in schools at that time. I was a child of the 90s and wondered why this movie felt so disjointed at times so I did a bit of a deep dive on how and why we got the theatrical release vs this ending.
22 years later and I appreciate and understand what the movie was about now. If you can see it you’ll see that it doesn’t matter what side you chose their is and always will be prejudiced. One side wants to look good and be polite while being prejudiced. The other side wants total rebel like freedom to be prejudiced.
I like this ending better. I read that test audiences didn't like seeing Gavin die, so the producers had the ending re-shot. There is a Director's cut by David Nutter, but MGM blocked its release. The studio cut 31 minutes from the original cut.

why did getting shot turn Gavin back to normal ? I mean granted the whole having a control chip inserted into your brain through your eyeball didn't make whole lot of sense to me at least and granted it's still a good movie and I like both endings fine this one doesn't make any sense

my first time watching this movie and i swear I thought gavin was just going along with it to either go further to prove his theories or to ultimately kill the blue ribbons once they went after rach, steve, and uv. I think they shouldve ended it with either letting them save gavin or this ending ... I agree the original ending was cheap and didnt fit the dramatics of the plot
