  • We visit a farm in Ellicott City, where they plant one of Maryland’s most popular crops: corn. We follow Ricky Bauer and his team as they work to ensure the best possible conditions for corn to grow and later be harvested. The process is long and meticulous, but every step has its own importance. Over the course of a few weeks, Ricky shows us how the crop is progressing. This is all thanks to the “no-till farming” and GPS technology that skilled farmers who work at Carroll Mill Farm utilize. Viewers can join us, at the end of this season, when we return to learn about the complexities of the corn harvesting process.

why do we dump so many toxic chemicals into our soil?

Oil company bought out big Ag biz to sell crude based NPK. Military Industrial Complex bought out big Ag to sell DDT and other chems. $$$$

Rye works great..........but also takes lots of nitrogen way. Therefore I plant in strips in the field rather then the entire field. Saves lots of nitrogen costs !

Why not do a diverse cover crop that can prevent runoff, erosion, fix nitrogen, and reduce weeds?

Less money in it, it'll work on a smaller scale. The farmers that run the countries corn and meat production have to pump out as much as possible. Less maintenance since when the corn is planted most of the work is done aside from irrigation. If you want farmers to be more ethical you need to show them some money, it's plain and simple. That's what got the cover crop initiative to work here.

That’s what most farmers are doing now, a multi species cover crop

I just don't like the herbicide part. Can't they just mow it down?

Why not crimp the rye instead of cancer juice?

What’s the point of no-till if you are using herbicides anyway 🤦🏼‍♀️

@@Sai_______ not sure to be honest. I've helped my parents in the field when I was a kid, but it was a small plot of land compared to what they are doing. Probably the AI robots zapping the weeds with lazers is gonna be the best solution to this 😁

@VeronikaM there are already robots zapping weeds with lasers. But, a lot of no till farms use non herbicide methods to terminate the cover crop. Crimping is one method that comes to mind

Herbicide will kill off the rye so it's roots don't compete with corn seedlings roots.
Tilled land is still herbicided first to kill grass to start drying it out for silage/hay

@kotukuwhakapiko467 I've been around a lot of farmers, and I've never seen or heard of one using herbicides on a hay field
