    So, I'll be one of the first to comment here. When we were young, especially being guys, we would never admit to liking this song but let me tell you, many years later when you fully appreciate music and lyrics, you will understand the power this song has. May be considered teenage girl music to some but it is one powerful song. I've been through generations of music and the Bee Gees were awesome. Keith Urban did a tribute version of it for a Barry Gibb tribute and blew it out of the stadium. Look it up, you will know what I mean. Thanks for the fun, I just found you on here and am having a blast watching you react to these songs.

    • @JM-zk9ou
      @JM-zk9ou ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Keith Urban sings this as a duet with Barry on his Greenfields 1 album that came out a few years back. Many of the songs are reimagined as country songs. It's very nice.

      I think it’s interesting to see each decade in order, back to back, and see/hear the evolution in appearance and style, how the voice matured, and how they changed things up to keep old songs current. Of course 1979 was my generation, so I can’t argue. Glad to have them!

    I watched a video on TH-cam where they each were talking about how they came together in their harmonies. Barry described Maurice as being the one who instinctively knew how to fit his voice in songs. In an old t.v. show, before they discovered their falsettos, they sang this song & it’s Maurice who sings the high parts in it! He was very talented vocally & instrumentally. He was probably the most important brother & he didn’t near enough praise for it ☮️✌️

    • @jerickson725
      @jerickson725 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Robin was fabulous too, and sang the lead in some of the songs, my favorite being "I Started A Joke" . I think all three were equally talented, and together it was just magic. Then there is little brother Andy - too much talent for one family!

    • @sallymcmanus9198
      @sallymcmanus9198 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      @@jerickson725 I have been a Bee Gees fan since the late 60’s & all of the brothers were so very talented. They had different sounding voices but they were able to blend together like magic! They were making plans to add Andy to the band before his death. I have learned so much about them in the past few months with searching on TH-cam. They were comedians in addition to their singing & that has made me love them even more, lol.

      @@sallymcmanus9198 I totally agree Sally. I've been a fan since I can remember; probably since 1974 when I was 10 and really started getting into music. This sound like an Otitis Redding song but The Bee Gees did a great job sing this song that they wrote for him.

    US or UK charts aren't all on earth. Did very good in Germany, bigger market as UK. But all in all, the world those days wasn't prepared for 'Whities', singin soulmusic (blue eyed soul). 'To Love Somebody' is to me their entry to songwriting-fame. Stephen Stills, Bono, Noel Gallagher and many other well know artists said things like "they're the hell for songwriters" or "If there's one song, I wished I had written, than its for sure 'To Love Somebody' ". The list of covers overall is endless and holds in names like Janis Joplin, Nina Simone, Bonnie Tylor, Rod Stewart, Leonard Cohen, Jimmy Sommerville and Michael Bolton.

    I couldn't wait for you to hear this. It is perfect R&B soul from 1967. Hundreds of singers have covered this, including Janis Joplin, Michael Bolton, and even Tom Jones. Barry has a perfect sense of timing, He comes in after beats (listen to him sing "You ain't got to be so ....blind" and especially "but what good does it .....do" This is soul at it's finest. Barry started writing it, and finished it with his brothers, with the thought that Otis Redding would sing it. Unfortunately that didn't happen. The brothers recorded, it, and sadly Otis perished in a plane crash. This is early, wonderful perfection.
