  • RUTENG, FLORES, INDONESIA 🇮🇩
Such a surreal place, just under 4 hours from Labuan Bajo yet polar opposite. We instantly felt the cold, and took comfort in it. We noticed the religion shift from Muslim to Catholic with beautifully dramatic churches. We witnessed children so happy to see us, at points running after our moped to shout "hello miss, hello mister". We met people so eager to engage with us, stopping to ask us for photos and practice their English. We ate in the same local warung 2 nights in a row because the food was just so good. We found rice fields shaped like spider webs, caves that held so much history and viewpoints like this one that made us stop and appreciate where we were and how far we had come. This little town doesn't seem like much on paper but made a real impact on our travel around Indonesia.

Ruteng is a small town located in a mountainous area, this town is predominantly Christian and is nicknamed the city of a thousand churches and monasteries. Apart from that, actually near the island of Flores there is also an island called Larantuka or usually called Indonesia's mini Vatican because this small island is predominantly Catholic, and it is usually very crowded there during the Semana Santa celebration.
