Is THIS a Locomotive??

  • It may look strange, but the Herzog Multi-Purpose Machine is actually a pretty clever design. The train has been heavily modified to help railroads maintain their right-of-ways and get the job done!

I've caught a rebuilt GP39-2 from Herzog that had a very similar cowl that fully enclosed the locomotive. It was HGZX 186.

Very interesting engine. I've seen examples of other Herzog engines with the cowl body covering the entire engine, but this is the first I've seen that still shows the unmistakable GP40 radiators.

Definitely an oddball locomotive. I saw it running BNSF's Beardstown sub with a hirailer escort in the front. If I recall, one side had a P3, and the other a K series of some sort. From what I remember as well, when the flat car cab end was leading and would sound its horn, the rear GP locomotive sounded its horn as well.

Is there some reason some cars are not hump-able? Maybe what is inside is too fragile ? I can see this Herzog train is pretty specialized but I have noticed sometimes the cars that are not hump-able look pretty orginary. I look forward to you upcoming videos but also, hopefully, this hump vs do not hump might be addressed. Again, Thanx for these videos. I especially enjoy your enthusiasim.

You should never mistake this unit from a gp38! A gp38 has only two radiator fans in the rear of the carbody!and it has only one dynamic brake fan! It is really sad that most people don't know a go38 from a gp40! This locomotive is a rebuilt gp40!not agp38! COUNT THE NUMBER OF COING FANS!
