Based on Anne Rice’s Lives of the Mayfair Witches, Mayfair Witches is an exploration of female power and the mortal implications of our decisions. It's not on Netflix, so hopefully it gets a couple seasons. AMC seems to give shows a chance. Nice to see Alexandria Daddario be in the lead.
TBF, AMC just cancelled Moonhaven AFTER having announced its renewal. Likely a financial decision.
Haha so true Netflix is like ohh we have a successful one on our hands but hmm it didn’t get that success in the first 10 seconds of release so we have to follow the algorithm really unfortunate but we have to cancel our number 1 show.
I am so close to canceling Netflix and I find myself being weary of even starting a show that looks good or that has buzz surrounding it because chances are it’ll get canceled way too soon and they won’t even give the show runners an opportunity to finish the show out completely so things end up being left open ended with a ton of questions unanswered.
AMC is no different than Netflix. Popularity contest. But even then, depends on the story being told, then yeah. They'll keep it. For now. A few seasons should do the trick here. Tell it within 3 seasons, and you got yourselves a story. If you want longstanding shows sort of seasons, then you're SOL with that one. AMC will not give you that (yes I know about The Walking Dead, but that's popular, it's more of a given than anything else). Good luck though. Much love and respect.
If people watch the shows on Netflix they wouldn’t get cancelled. AMC will give it a shot. Hope it’s not as boring as the other Anne Rice vampire show.

Their formula is to add one decent show to carry many.
Then cancel or change the writers and ruin a good show... Plus their monthly rates are idiotic. Greedy dirt bags.

@@SkyExplosion Honestly the changes that were made to IWTV make a lot of sense. We must remember that most of the books were written in the '70s-'90s. How things were presented wouldn't have held up well. Like Louis living on a plantation and having slaves.

@@CathieSoli The IWTV script actually says inspired by on the cover, not adapted from. The show was actually better than the book or movie, a lot of it for the nuance they gave Louis. U should give it a shot!

well, I can tell you after the trailer, the absence of Michael in it made me go to IMDB. No Michael. No Julien. In other words, no Mayfair story. Just another butcher job and cash grab.

I wonder if the Mayfairs will briefly mention that vampires used to have a presence in the city way back in the early 20th century? I know the Du Lacs mentioned the Mayfairs were their neighbors and of course in the second to last episode of the first season, they hinted other supernatural beings besides vampires existed in their world. It's all connected! #ImmortalUniverse
In the books she did eventually blend the Vampire Chronicles with the Mayfair Witch series. Lestat meets and slightly romances Rowan, although she is in a relationship at the time. spoiler alert Rowan’s promiscuous.

To see these Mayfairs brought to life is such an amazing gift I selfishly get from my favorite author. This is my favorite series from here. To say I can't wait and I'm excited is an understatement

with that name aren't you concerned there is no mention anywhere of a Michael character in the story? without that character, this literally has zero chance of following the narrative of the book, right from the start.

I remember reading The Mayfair Witches, Lasher, and Taltos years ago. I'm gonna be all over this!
If I hadn’t read the book, I’d be all over this show, but as a book fan, I can’t get passed all the changes from having the emerald be a key (obvious much) to Rowan being brunette and Michael and Aaron merged into one character who wasn’t in the book. The Witching Hour has sex, incest, violence, powerful yet tragic women and a mysterious tale winding down from the 1600s to the 1980s, it could have rivaled GoT if it stayed true to the source material and was on cable where it could be itself. On AMC which still has network constraints and with major changes made, it can succeed, but it will never reach the masterful nature of Rice’s text.
My thoughts exactly. So disappointing.
Interview with the vampire also suffered form some major changes and I complained a lot when only seeing trailers, but giving the show a chance by the end you totally forget because the writing and cinematography and story telling and acting is so good, it just all works. I hate when they change book lore usually but AMC is really doing a good job adapting this universe.
It's literally one of my favorite book series of all time, which is why I cannot watch this show. Her writing was perfection, down to every last detail. I can't imagine this show will do it justice.

Please don’t forget about Lasher!!! He was over 7 feet and older than humanity. An he didn’t move or behave like a vampire. He was actually a well spoken businessman but truly was the last of his species.

I guess Alexandra Daddario is perfect for this role. I watched 2-3 movie \ serial with her. Always she pushed away and charmed me at the same time. She truly has charisma and her own flavour.

Apparently AMC decided to combine the characters of Aaron Lightner and Michael Curry from the books(Ciprien Grieve). Seems like a rather drastic change. I wonder how Anne Rice would have felt.

Probably not happy, her son won't even comment and that's really telling. This may be an unpopular opinion but I couldn't stand to finish the first episode of Interview with the Vampire, and hearing about all the changes they're doing to the Mayfair Chronicles I'm dreading what these would look like.

I loved the new twists with Interview. This decision has me extremely worried for the quality of the story. Rowan and Michael are basically a dyad, destined from birth to find/complete one another. Seems reckless to cut out one of the 3, most important characters from the books.

Why are the books compelling?
Because Anne Rice is both a great story teller and a great writer. She raises the horror novel genre to the level of literature. The closest thing to her books I have seen is the original Interview with the Vampire from the 90’s with Cruise and Pitt. Anne Rice wrote the screenplay. Tom Cruise was not right for the role of Lestat but he is a great actor so he pulled it off. I wish AMC would not have remade Interview and made “The Vampire Lestat”- which is Lestat’s origin story. I also loved Queen of the Damned and The Tale of the Body Thief. She also wrote some great historical novels (non horror)- The Feast of All Saints is about mixed race families in 19th century New Orleans and Cry to Heaven is about male opera singers in 18th century Italy.

@@LunaWolf29 Cruise was a terrible choice, but obviously could have been worse. Pitt however really embodies Louis very well. The rest, with Banderas and all was a joke, but the movie overall still worked. Banderas would have made a much better Marius. As far as this trailer, with literally some of the most important characters removed there is nothing here for me to watch, just like the new Interview series, a total bastardization. You can't tell the Mayfair story without a Michael character. You can't have Louis start as a black pimp, which is what they do. It ruins his core trait throughout the novels, the one who has so much empathy he is the closest to human. You don't build that sensibility thru a life as a pimp. I imagine my standards are too high, but I wish they'd just leave it alone if they aren't even gonna try to follow the book from the beginning.

Only thing that made me want to give it a shot was Anne Rice and what ive heard about her book. I only saw the first episode of this and it was a real disappointment.

I'm glad HBOMax has Interview with the Vampire on it, because I finally got to see it! Hopefully Mayfair Witches will be on there too. Big fan of Anne Rice's novels for decades now, and happy to see that AMC is doing the characters from these stories so well!

Okay, so having read the book I have some thoughts. I do hope that Daddario captures Rowan’s sort of aloofness. Also the actress who plays Carlotta is sort of consistent with my conception of her (albeit Carlotta in the book is a lot older). Apparently they also combined Michael’s character and Aaron’s character, which is probably my biggest gripe so far. Either way I’m excited and will be watching! Oh I also hope they devote time to exploring each of the witches’ backstories starting from Suzanne, and especially Deborah and Mary Beth’s. :)

Rowan had very long blonde hair. I wish they would stay true to the character. It was referenced all through the novel. Blonde & grey/blue eyes and very tall.

My biggest concern is whether they will keep Rowan's essence, her personality and whether they'll keep the core points seen in the books.

Well she technically doesn't look anything like Rowan Mayfair because she suppose to be androgynous looking with ashen blond hair and piercing grey eyes. Pretty much that almost describes Tilda Swinton or Cate Blanchett.

And like Interview with the Vampire, I'm sure AMC will ruin this as well. It's hilarious they call it Anne Rice's. For the Interview with the Vampire series, they took her characters, and wrote their own story. If it's really her work, then they should do proper adaptations of her books, how she wrote them. Anything else should be considered plagiarism.

I had never heard of this book series previously, but after watching IWTW, I'm looking forward to this. I hope they mention something about vampires, not necessarily the ones we've already seen though.

I love these books. I was worried that this would be awful. It's not. It's thorough and follows the book wonderfully. It's magnificent so far.

Currently reading the book and I stared 2 days ago and I’m half way through. This book is insanely good. And I’m grateful there is another 2 books. There is so much detail and so much they can do. But this trailer looks a little thin and I fear Michael and Aaron aren’t gonna be in it. When they are crucial characters.
Read the books and get lost in their brilliance - DO NOT watch the series - it’s that bad.

Why bother naming something after a book when it is almost completely different from the source material? If you're going to change the whole essence of the story, why not just make something new? Oh yes, because of course they want to milk the books' popularity. And don't bother telling me not to watch, because that seems to be the usual reaction to criticism nowadays, but after loving the books for decades this is really heartbreaking.
Last I checked, the books are there so go read them...
this is what you get from people today who have no respect for the books. they also seem to have no concept of criticism, as though their entire view of the adaptation will suddenly collapse if you point out the bad things in the adaptation. they give off the vibe that they don't read books at all. any nerd implicitly understands that books are some of the best things in the world and to see people gleefully trash source materials for money is a definite sign of a crumbling culture.

Rowan isn't blond? No Michael? No Aaron? How can people comment that this is true to the books? It clearly isn't.
Rowan was Nordic Blond like her ancestor Peter. The necklace is wrong. No Michael? No Julien? No thanks. Some of these details could have easily followed the books.

I don't mind different interpretations on stories, tweaks and twists to make the onscreen story it's own. That said, I have no idea how you tell this story without Michael Curry or why they decided to fuse Curry & Aaron Lightner into one character that isn't present in the books. I loved the new take on Interview with the Vampire. This looks amazing, too. I worry this decision may ruin the story, or at least keep it from being what it could have been.
I found Lestat in the the series so annoying. Like the dude just doesn't shut up. He's that yappy pretentious queen instead of his brooding sensual bisexual powerhouse self in the books. Luis got an upgrade for sure but the actor they cast for Lestat is so bad.
I was looking forever for this comment. The actor who plays this new "fused" character could've easily been Michael. Michael is the heart of the books. He keeps things grounded. I don't know how a guy who works for the Talamasca is gonna do that. But I guess we'll see. I love Alexandra as an actor and was so excited when she was cast as Rowan!
Anne Rice has to be turning over in her grave at this TV rendition of her Mayfair witches. They completely did away with Rowan’s love interest who is a main character. Michael provides the back story of life in New Orleans and the history of Rowan’s mother. I gave it four episodes, and it only gets more muddled.

Alexandra Daddario is so beautiful just as ever and I remember seeing her in Texas Chainsaw 3D 2013 and that was a January movie too and now her new show series is in January 8 10 years later and it will mark the 10th Anniversary when Texas Chainsaw 3D came out and she did a great job in that movie too and sadly they couldn’t make a sequel because I would of like to see her character come back but no we had Leatherface 2017 which was a prequel to the original Texas Chainsaw Massacre 1974 film

So far these AMC Anne Rice adaptions are killing it. It would be interesting to see the same guys adapt Twilight into series as they’ve been making slight changes from the source material already with their shows and it hasn’t ruined anything.
Edit: Like giving Bella more of a personality, getting rid of Alice’s vision scene in the final story by going full vampire war (that was the biggest rip off seeing the movies) & better explaining how on earth Bella traveled to Italy out of the blue without telling her parents.
I'd be interested in seeing someone else's interpretation of Twilight, honestly, it has the skeleton of a good story with a bunch of fluff in the forefront.
I read The Witching Hour and it was good, great actually. The trailer was kinda eery so I see it captured that element. Definitely be tuning in. I always thought someone should do these!

I just watched the first episode didn’t keep my attention for the remainder think they could have found other actors for some of the roles 😢

What they did with vampire chronicles was so disrespectful with original material, now they do it again with mayfair witches!
If the books were a best seller, it was for something, but these geniuses changed what they want, and end up destroying the work. It is pointless! What a shame!
