What do you think about Amsterdam? Is it a great city to live or to visit?

I find it so funny when people find the climate so hard. Maybe I am just completely made for this weather, but I can don´t mind the weather at all and sometimes I prefer the colder over the heat of the summer. I guess when people are from Brazil that it might be different because they are used to a complete different climate. I would just recommend them to take vitamin D and a infrared lamp because that can help against winter depression.

Agree the winter times can be tough, especially the last year with the extreme amount of rain. However it has many advantages, including increasing the water quality you talked about. Plus because of the cold we don’t have tropical deceases like malaria (yet).
And I really like the different seasons, even the wet winter one. They make me appreciate when the sun comes out, and I actually prefer the cold, but rather would like to see more snow and ice in stead of constant raining. However one big winner here is nature, that has overcome the extreme drought we have been suffering the last few years.

Lived in Amsterdam for a few years - which was an interesting experience with ups and downs. Being older now I wouldn't do so again as it no longer feels like a Dutch city and the cost of living has become insane.
Many smaller Dutch cities offer the same and sometime better benefits and these are all within easy reach of Amsterdam.

Why stay if it is all so bad! It is not very nice to hear this rather egocentric criticism

Yes, the center of Amsterdam is compact, with narrow streets. That happens when a place surrounded by walls or water attracts people, or when investors want to earn as much as possible from a building lot. Another option, poor-quality buildings, became harder when a national law (Woningwet, in 1901) imposed standards on buildings.
Amsterdam has a fascinating history [matter of opinion] in many respects, including building (what to build where: mixing or integrating? - in various respects). The assumed ideal of housing many people in park-like surroundings resulted in the "honeycomb" apartment buildings that soon made the Bijlmermeer a no-go area (and most of them have been replaced by "Almere-style" housing). I'm not sure what to recommend for further reading/viewing/visiting.
EDIT: I wrote "mixing or integrating", but I meant "separating or integrating". Sorry! :-)
Apart from this, Amsterdam may have been in a transformation process for a century now: the "stadsvernieuwing" of replacing poor-quality blocks with better ones, the loss of so many citizens to mass-murdering, then to new lives elsewhere (Israel, Canada, Almere). Nowadays, most "originals" seem to cling on to the homes they happen to have, as moving to another home in Amsterdam is almost out of reach. Enter the expats. When I'm strolling in Amsterdam-Noord (where I live), I notice even cyclists chatting in more languages than Dutch and English.
The population is changing faster than before, though not as fast as in the 17th century (I guess). So is the atmosphere. Similar developments (opening up to a global society, and no doubt clinging to the certainties of the past as a reaction) seem to take place "everywhere".

Blame the government. I have no problem with expats when they contribute to the country, but there are definitely some they should get rid of, illegals, and I hate to say it because they need to live somewhere, the assilum seekers, we have no room, not enough homes, the Dutch cannot move home, because there are no homes available....
