There are numerous interesting things about this war, from it being the start of Lincoln’s career in federal politics to the last stand of Henry Clay, one of the best major party candidates to never become president. But perhaps the most interesting is that of the American Diplomat for the treaty of Guadeloupe-Hidalgo, Nicholas Trist. See, Trist was sent by Polk expecting him just to demand as much as America could get away with, but as it turned out, Trist was actually a fervently anti-war Democrat and once he got to Mexico, he went out of his way to sign the worst treaty for America that he knew Polk would accept. Only reason he didn’t write a treaty that just gave Mexico everything back with an apology check was because he knew that Polk would flatly refuse and send someone else a little more expansionist.
Well, that's a bit unfair. One of the points I read he made was that depriving Mexico of more territory would basically doom the country to civil war. Losing half the territory was already a huge shock. The idea was that Mexico should be able to keep the legitimacy of its government institutions intact. This is to avoid revanchism and jingoism in the future.
I’ve read about Trist, and honestly he should have been charged with treason for what he did.

Mexico was really unlucky through history. They just got independence from Spain, had to abolish monarchy with a civil war, had to deal with a ton of independence movements, US citizens migration. And then, United States showed up and during the war they had to release Yucatan and take it later. And LATER when US civil war happened, France invaded Mexico and left it in ruins again. Damn, Mex is like one your unlucky friend who can't do anything in life, but somehow still exists

Brief Summary:
-Mexico was a chaos in 1800’s (lots of separatism)
-Just one republic gained “independence” (TEXAS) with ONE CONDITION: dont join the US
-Texas joined the US and claimed extra land
-US occupies
-Mexico “declared” war for its taken land (you can say the US started it by invading first)
-Poor mexican army + no mexican navy + centralist government + more americans + better american navy + mexican instability = mexican defeat
US just wanted an excuse to invade (it even tried to invade Canada), so yeah americans are not the “good ones” in every war theyre involved.
just some mexican guy I live in Texas and you've educated me about the situation in Mexico at the time, the way it's taught here is that the US claimed land to the Rio Grande, while Mexico claimed the border was at the Nueces, so when an American army regiment sent to guard the border ran into some Mexicans, who promptly fired on them starting the war. My only personal problems about Mexico is the whole Battle of the Alamo situation. Anyways, thanks.

And how empty that northern land was. Santa Fe was the only city in the land ceded to the US which had over a thousand people when the war began. San Diego and San Francisco were both still in the hundreds.

Tiny El Salvador was the 'epicenter' of revolting and leaving Mexico while the rest of the central american countries were nervously trying to revolt as well. El Salvador is a feisty country that deserves respect against all odds and succesfully lead the rest of the central american countries to leave Mexico for good.

For the Mexicans it was quite bad too, 82,000 Mexicans took up arms in the war. If non-combat military deaths and civilian deaths are included, then the Mexican death toll reached up to 25,000 according to "Warfare and Armed Conflicts: A Statistical Encyclopedia of Casualty and Other Figures, 1492-2015, 4th edition". So the battle deaths represented in the video are just a microcosom of the casualties actually suffered in the war.

Fortunately a new government was established in Mexico, getting rid of the same political party that ruled Mexico for 70 years which is the corrupt party (PRI), the new president is fighting corruption and investing in Mexican oil, they're doing well but they need time, maybe inna few years that country will have a better economy. Over a decade after that war ended. And there were deep divisions in the United States at that time.
And the U.S. civil war began just 13 years after the Mexican war ended in 1848, which sowed divisions between the states that can still be felt today.

I like how this animation includes the history fact that Mexico once didn't extend as far south as it does now. That Mexico annexed land fallen from the Central American Republic. What it doesn't show though is that the Baja Peninsula remained part of California and so it also became part of the U.S.. Until the U.S. gave it back to Mexico because of concerns that crime in the region would get out of control because of the isolation by the long southern extension and the Pacific Ocean & Gulf of California.
Although the USA wanted Baja California, it could not get it thanks to Nicolas Trist without him, Mexico would only have 1/2 of the territory it has today.
Yucatán was never part of the Central American Republic and they joined Mexico very soon after this war. Mexico has always been a pacifist neutral country.

President James K. Polk actually wanted even more territory from Mexico, he wanted basically everything that wasn't too populated north of Mexico City. However the major generals of the war such as Sherman and Taylor were part of the opposition party (the Whigs) and they didn't want to add too much land to the slave-holding south so they settled for California, New Mexico and Western Texas. Honestly the United States had such an overwhelming victory in this war that it could have just taken whatever it wanted by the time it was over, there was little Mexico could do about it.
Fun fact, Mexico fully expected to easily beat America and several European powers such as Spain, France and Prussia also dismissed America in this war. History can be quite funny sometimes!

The landing in Veracruz was in the early 1900s not 1857

Monterrey gave the US a tough time, that was because Monterrey was ethnically united(more Mestizo and Criolle) and behind the concept of Mexico(new concept). Veracruz are ethnically Mayan and had no allegience to Mexico and were part of the YUCATAN republic... The Yucatan at this time was fighting for is indpence just as Texas did, and many Yucatec governors were overthrown and fled to Louisiana but begging the US to overthrow Santa Ana.
Puebla is home of the Tlaxcallan Nahautl people so they also had no allegience to Mexico too. The only place that had resitance in the capital was Chapultepec but they were just cadets (15-19 year olds).
It's not until Porfirio Diaz that Yucatan is annexed by Mexico and the Mayans are visoucsly taken as slaves to work the mines of Zacatecas. Many Mexicans in the US think that Mexico is a holy saint, but Mexico during Santa Ana and Diaz was a super corrupt and violent state .

@@siulseven1096 From what I understand, the Mexican government was having trouble maintaining settlements in Texas because they kept getting raided by natives in the area. So they allowed Americans into Texas
