I dig how you tell stories. I enjoy your Story Time videos more than the normal 4x4 stuff. My wife is just in love with your content. She doesn't watch a lot of TH-cam but for you she can watch the whole video. Keep up. This had me in stitches though, especially the part about Baboons chasing you.

As a rifle and bow hunter for the past 44 years I have witnessed many shots like this. People have to realise that some folks are born with better reflexes, hand/eye co-ordination and others can just run faster than most. We all have different gifts and this man was obviously a remarkable marksman. Just look into history, there have been many freakily accurate snipers in the armed forces with very basic equipment by today's standards who pulled off incredible shots. Thank you for a very entertaining story Andrew...
No my man it was standard requirment to be able to shoot a chest sized target at 850m with open sites R1 or R4 in the old south african army. Ive seen my father do the same thing. He would just pick up a rifle to his line of sites and slot a running springbuck in its head, infact on the farm when he and his brothers we asked to go fetch meat they were only aloud to shoot head shots so as to not waste meat. The times he didnt shoot head shot an missed happened so few times that they remeber each time and still tease him about it.The old army had incredibly high standards and were the most deadly ground and airborn units in the world along with Rhodesian forces of the time. Go read about 32 batalion and exucutive outcomes. Any man that was in an infantry unit was expected to be a master marksmen, it wasn't talent it was a requirment.

I was at boyscout camp with my son many years ago in Northern California, when a mountain lion attacked a horse in the coral 100 ft from where we were sleeping in a tent. The horse screamed and woke up the camp. Most horrible sound I have ever heard. It survived. We got a state tracker and a permit to shoot it but never saw it again. If it was bold enough to attack a 1200 pound horse, it wouldn’t have thought twice about going after a 10 year old scout.
Loved it Andrew you’ve definitely have a great way with story telling , and you’ve definitely have had a great life so far by the sounds of it.I hope that we meet soon as I feel you have a lot to offer to others in an inspirational way. Saffa hunter here. I can confirm, baboons know what a rifle is. They’re eyesight is amazing, look it up it’s quite fascinating. Impressive that you went after them with a shot gun. South African game farm baboons wouldn’t get close enough.
Great story! (Since they were so sensitive to the weapon's sound, you could have used something like a clicking frog to scare them off and if they ever got used to it, then bring out the weapon for real.)

I too hate baboons, Andrew, with good reason. In about 1960 in Zimbabwe at the age of 9 I was bitten by one. I had ridden my bicycle to the local native store and my dog had come along. He went sniffing around the back of the store and there was a baboon tied up there - it attacked my dog so I went in to rescue him and got a nice chunk taken out of my wrist. I still remember riding home with blood p*ssing out of the hole and tears running down my cheeks. My mother was a nurse and decreed that I didn't need stitches so to this day I have the scar to remind me how much I hate them. I revisited Zim in 2014 and went to where the store was. It had gone and there was a flash pizza place there, run by a couple of sisters. I told them the story - they were amazed that after 50 years in Australia I had come back to Zim to the spot where I'd been chewed....
A gunsmith I know has a baboon skull, from an alpha male, that he takes with him to all the fieldsports shows, he calls it "Yorick." The canine teeth are huge, absolutely huge. Great story, thank you for telling it.
Andrew. Love the stories. Had a similar problem with a horse (I did not shoot it so please listen to my brief tale). We were on a caravan holiday in the English country side in a rented caravan, the caravan was sited right next to fence keeping a horse contained within a field. From the first morning we arrive just before 6am this horse would tap its head against the window of the caravan, we soon realised it did this every day as it was used to being rewarded with food by other holiday makers. Now I do not dislike horses, but we are not early risers and this by the third morning was ruining our day, so I decided on what I hoped would be a solution. So I went shopping to be prepared for my wake up call next day. As expected we heard the tap on the window and on this occasion I opened the window and greeted the magnificent beast. I held out my hand and gave him some sugar lumps which he obviously enjoyed, I then held out my hand a second time and fed him a handful of “Fisherman’s Friends cough sweets” for those who may not be familiar with the product they are to say the least very strong to taste almost having a similar effect to eating a raw chilli...To say they had an immediate effect would have been an understatement!!! All I can say it that for the remainder of our stay we were no longer disturbed first thing in a morning from then on😀 Love the content and wishing I could replicate some of your travels and adventures...
Having had baboon's raid my tent while camping near Vic falls in 1998 I can appreciate your experience. I too on more than one occasion have shot nuisance baboon's and I can tell you the staff were very appreciative of the "bush" meat.

Nice story telling Andrew Same thing is happening on Fraser island here in Australia where ignorant people feed the dingoes ,and have to be culled only because they lose their fear of humans
Great story. Yes I have seen how baboons unzip a tent in Kruger Park. Never believed they can...until that day. I have also seen how they first go peep into a caravan to see if the folks are sleeping, then went to raid the side-tent. They ripped my tent (heavy canvas) open from one side to the other. They have raided my camp numerous times - ripped plastic ammo boxes open to consume the contents. So not to fond of them either :-).
You tell a hell of a good story. Next time you are in the US, consider coming to one of the Cowboy Poetry and Story Telling events; I think you would enjoy it. Maybe even share one of yours.

How about electric fences - or later just the look of them, wouldn't that work? We chase martens away from engine bays with pocket size electronic devices that really makes them jump when they TOUCH it, it's not ticking the whole night.
Good story, and believable. I have read some of the comments on here and some people don't understand how a shotgun works. The farther away the target, the greater the spread of the pellets. It only takes one pellet to get the job done. 000 has 10 pellets and 00 has 15 pellets. If it was a slug it would have separated it's head into two halves.
Great story, Andrew! This reminds me of how came to see a Massey Ferguson Red alpha male baboon on the Nottingham Road Loteni district road. We were in the back of a Landrover 110 tdi200 landrover pickup on the way to Loteni for an overnight hike to Yellowwood Cave. We were passing Nzinga Cattle Ranch only to see a lone, very bright red baboon a short distance away from the main troop around catte feeding stations. Being an avid wildlife enthusiast I sent a photo of this odd baboon to my ex Natal Parks Board dad and my then current Cape Nature older brother. The former mentioned mutations, genetic throwbacks etc. My brother sends back a message saying " Peter M^^^^^s has been painting the boss baboon again. It must have stolen the cattle feed licks again...
Never want to meet a baboon due to stories I've heard; but just think Andrew, if a baboon never s*** on your head, you'd never have a great story to tell! I love story time! An art that should never die! My kids are always asking me "tell a funny story, tell a funny story!". I hope i can keep up without repeating... I find it is through some of the most distasteful moments of my life the best stories are born.
Storytelling is an underappreciated art, but I appreciate it, very much.More please :-)

it might have made the camp more unsightly but staking the baboon's body up into the tree probably would have been a far better deterrent
