This is the old school playing that is sadly losing out to contemporary flash. During this time, the emotional content of performing was given proper appreciation. This man is a MASTER!
I'd always thought David Oistrakh play any violin music the best. But as far as this Cantabile is concerned, Kogan is the best! I almost cry as I hear this music. It is so touching. I am in seventh heaven!
I miss the old violin greats like Kogan especially. Don't get me wrong, today's world-renowned violnists are great and all, but they just can't compare to the old greats like Kogan.
I've just listened to 20 different versions. This guy wins. He feels the passion and let's the violin sing the music's heart out. Rather than making the violin itself above that of the music. A true master musician. Towards the end he's almost in internal turmoil reigning in his talent, forcing it into the music making.
the slides, the varied vibrato speeds, the placement of the bow...all parts of the larger picture...and yet after all the preparation you just have to let it all go in a way...and make music...Kogan seems so real to me here...I think the other thing I love is the "coldness" in his face...yet what comes out of the violin does not reflect this in the least...simply wonderful playing
Aubrey, I agree wholeheartedly about Kogan's playing. However, I don't agree about the "coldness" in his face. His face reflects intense emotion. Facial coldness is the domain of Jascha Heifetz, i.e. "The great stone face" who never showed any emotion on stage except in his actual playing.
***** Well, I myself tend to lean toward the old folks. Milstein in Baroque music, with a silvery tone and an exquisite taste. Rabin for Romantic works, with a rich, warm and sweet sound. Szeryng for Mozart, the man must have the most stable sound that I've ever heard. Oisrakh Beethoven and Kogan Brahms, or Kogan Beethoven and Oistrakh Brahms. You can't go wrong with either. Last but not least, as much Heifetz as I can get my hands on, because it's Heifetz.
Masterful and really outstanding. He is the true seed of God. It is far superior than trading one's soul with the devil. Now having listened to this piece, go and spend your life to find anybody who can sound like this. Awesome.
Kogan was all business and no bullshit. He had solid technique and so much musicality. He had so much consistency to his approach and his overall demeanor. There’s too much razzle dazzle with a lot of modern day artists. Oh well, that’s why artists like Kogan will always be the greatest
This is as good as it gets. They don't make musicians like Leonid Kogan any more, unfortunately. The world in which he and others of his generation flourished is gone. But at least we have marvellous recordings such as this one as consolation.
+Joel Carli because it's the 21st century, where people are more interested in knowing how many times musicians got high with shit and how many things they fucked. Sadly classical musicians don't offer the shock factor[sarcasm]
+Bhaskar Mukherjee The worst part... Classical music is totally for young people. It's perfect for us.. All the emotion.. Of course it's perfect for humanity
Nowadays, it's all about looks. Just look at the recent major violin competitions... ... Luckily Kogan, Oistrakh, Heifetz and many more musicians didn't live in our times - they wouldn't even get any recording contracts with their looks.
youtube is amazing. watching these videos is such a treat! thank you! originally, i thought my favorite violinist was heifetz, but then i started leaning towards oistrakh, and now i learn of kogan! love it!
So much passion in his playing but without the gymnastic theatrics we see today on the concert stage. Bravo Maestro🎻👏👏👏
Exactly 😅
@@mpumelelobuthelezi413 what theatrics ?
Absolutely RIGHT!!!
what theatrics are u talking about ?

I think this performance of Cantabile is the best one, played perfect. Thank you Leonid, you were one of the best.
Until little Himari was born. :) Check out little Himari Yoshimura's version. I think she is the absolute best. Yes, even better than Mr. Kogan.
U still alive? ಥ‿ಥ
@@ghettoracerI disagree
@@ghettoracer Смешно!!!
Leonid Kogan is the best. If you are a violinist, I bet just watching him will teach you everything that you don't get in music school.
A volcano of emotion, controlled into perfection. This is - for me - the essence of music.
I like the sound of his violin, so pure and very clear. For me Kogan is the greatest.
leonid is perfect, so clean, so prolix, he play so calm, the best of the best
Kogan was an incredible violinist
And he will always be

This must also be the reason that so many people are in love with this piece
Magnifique exécution! Encore un grand maître du violon!
The man is king of the violin. Mastery beyond anything imaginable.

Totaly agreed. Kogan was a Paganini's especialist, he was the only at his time (our time!?) to play the Stradivarius from Paganini, a true legend.
@@carlosreismusic9813 he may have played it from time to time but he was not a strad guy. rather, a guarneri guy; he owned 2 guarneris
I think so !
I agree, but I really enjoyed Bell’s performance of this as well
@@vincentcsvn yeah, paganini owned the il canone guarneri, i think thats what carloreismusic means
Perfect execution . The best in the world .
Bravo!
I can't seem to stop myself from repetitively listening to this performance in complete adoration.
His vibrato is so mature :) I just love it!
My favorite composer played by one of my favorite violinists... definitely no words are enough to describe the beauty in this melody
What a amazing way to deliver Paganini ..perfect emotional connection with just fingers touch
This is the best!!!!❤
The sound quality is fabulous, clear and sharp. I love this piece by Paganini. Thankyou for this video.

The best interpretation of Paganini's
Cantabile
Thank you for sharing this! My violin teacher told me about him and I am so surprised to find something so old here on TH-cam :)
Heart-quickening, breath-hindering, tears-inducing.

One of my violin heroes. Kogan is the best violinist of all time! God bless him!
Her Majesty Kogan is five stars PLUS supernatural magic of touch and expression.
In EACH piece he plays.

What is beyond you . People like only idiot music .
There are many “violin gods” during the violin Golden Age, but Kogan is no doubt sitting on the very top of the pantheon.👍👍👍👍👍
Simply the best, without any other words. Really explains the meaning of the word ,,Cantabile''
