  • When greedy contractors wanted thousands of dollars to change our carpet covered stairs into hardwood we found a way to do it for less. With a little elbow grease and tools from the Toronto tool library (torontotoollib...) our DIY renovation looks great!

    Looks great! I think I'm going to try it, but will use quarter round in-between stairs so I don't need perfect lines! I suck at taping...

      Probably worth it, we went with the extreme budget option!

    Where exactly did the hardwood of your renovation come into play? All you did was sand , stain and paint the existing wood that was already there.

      It’s true, our original plan was to put on hardwood, but the prices were a bit high - so we used multiple coats of wood hardener instead. It’s held up fantastic so far.

    Nice job and way to save that $$$! If you have one available, a miter saw is really helpful, even the plastic cheap hand version. This will help give you a nice appearance between the stained and painted parts. Pre-paint or stain some base, shoe, toe molding (whatever it's called where you live). Measure the width of the tread where it meets the riser. Cut your trim about 1/16"- 1/8" longer (you be the judge) and nail in place. Making it a bit longer ensures a nice snug fit on either side. Each stair will probably be different. Just bow the molding out in the middle, place either side and then push the piece flat and nail in place. Pvc trim is a lot more flexible than wood but, both are fine options. If you don't have a nail gun, no problem, a hammer, nail set, and trim nails is as easy and using a hammer is more rewarding than a nail gun sometimes!. Sorry for the long post. I do this type of work for a living and there's a lot of nuance one learns from experience that's hard to explain...maybe that's why people make videos lol. Stairs turned out great! Nice job.

    Are these stairs builders plywood and u painted them ?'or real hardwood stairs?

    • @imamike
      @imamike  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Bess, not plywood - Stairs were Pine, and we used a chemical wood hardener to make them durable for daily use. Highly recommended as it saves a ton of money and works just as well as the crazy priced natural hardwoods!

    We are doing this project now. We are using RetroTreds and are very pleased with them. Measuring each tread (both width and front-to-back) for trimming was tough until we (re) invented a jig out of two wooden rulers that slide over each other. Cut a 6" slot lengthwise and secure the two rulers with a bolt/washer/wing nut. Or spend a hundred bucks US on the Step Doctor jig. (If nothing else, looking at their jig will make the description of my jig clear. Same idea.
    Anyway, you did a very nice job.

    Should have gotten a sander that attaches to shop vac and used a much lower grit.

    • @imamike
      @imamike  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I have one now! Didn’t even know that was an option back then. But at that point it needed a VERY high grit. I did step down during the finishing stages.

    I'm currently in the process of doing (supervising, actually)) the exact same thing on my neighbor's staircase here in Santa Fe. It helps that she's in Mexico for a few months. It got finished today except for a few more coats of polyurethane in the coming days. This is an excellent video on showing the process. It's worth the effort. Just do it.

    I spent $250 buy 3/4” Bruce hardwood to replace 12 steps old carpet stairway, all hardwood floor, No white paint on risers, it is a permanent job, not a easy work but wealth to do it, highly recommended. It took me 7 x 5hrs to completed.
