This is another great vlog, mate. I went to Japan for my vacation for two weeks in Tokyo, Kyoto, Hiroshima and Fukuoka. I live in stupid boring Beaverton Oregon (20 minutes out of Portland) and the rents have trippled here in past few years so a trashy terrible 1 bedroom cost $1500.00 per month but most of the newer small 1 bedrooms are now over 2000.00 usd and starting to hit 3000.00 with add ons like having a pet or a car to park and garbage and maintenance fees etc... its crazy here and the state government made an emergency rent control so property owners now have a limit how much they can increase the rent each year... its because too many stupid people all decided to move here all at once and now it is terrible with traffic and new angry residents and super high costs so now downtown tokyo is cheaper than tiny ridiculous Beaverton Oregon and all of the other surrounding towns too.

Is it odd that I really like learning about other people's routines? The difference between costs for groceries and rent is curious too - and the habits people have! Fascinating. PS: I had been wondering how those stunning shots were made when you were walking to and from destinations. Great to see the mystery resolved at the end.

How people don’t get that he’s trying to show average cost of everything so you get an idea if you wanted to visit tokyo, doesn’t mean he’s doing that every day
No, in the description it literally says "If you are moving to Japan you might want to know how much does it cost to live in Japan?" So that would be living in Japan not visiting.
@@owogasm his comment still means the same. He's saying it's not necessarily an average cost for every day. There may be days higher or lower and for people to relax. You're arguing semantics. Look up the word so you know what it means.

@Claire I spend far less in Japan than I did in Korea, you just so not live in the core of Tokyo, I'm in Kanagawa and food is cheaper here as well as rent. The down deposits for renting in Korea turned me off completely, and the food was great up to my 4th month and it all got boring because it was almost all pretty much the same but with slight differences. @@mennmenny9182 if you're a foreigner especially from usa, australia or any developed countries who are sent to works here, yes. But you won't like the government and their law cuz it's rigged and corrupt.
Uh, no buddy. That isn't average at all. If you're doing that daily then you're either wasting money you don't have(how you stay poor) or you just make enough and are spending within your means. You go broke when you spend more than you make.
The priciest thing ,of course the rent ,about £900 per month ......if it;s central Tokyo ,it;s not far from a London rent ,or maybe New York....I agree ,apart from the gym ( not necessary) the other prices are not too bad ,by Western capitals' comparison .
I was a bit surprised by that, I'm not sure if that was his family plan or something. My dad lives close to Tokyo and he pays $60 for unlimited everything.
Rent in hotspots of all major developed cities are about the same price. He's shown us cost of things we might spend on daily... But an average person wouldn't buy all those things every single day... Also average person in Tokyo doesn't live in a hotspot.
Actually I was watching a Japanese woman interview Japanese men on the streets (I can't recall the name of the channel at the moment) and one question she asked is if the men wanted kids and nearly all said no since the living was so expensive and they all have to work so hard just to scrape by.
Great video! But honestly, the cost of living in Switzerland (especially in a bigger city like Zürich) is even more expensive then Tokyo...I didn't expect that to be honest haha. What would also interest me: what's the situation with taxes and health insurances in Japan? Because in Switzerland, those are probably the highest expenses if you permanently live & work there. Note: Health insurance (at least a sickness insurance) is mandatory in Switzerland.
You can definitely live frugally in Tokyo and still live well! Find a cheap apartment or split the rent with a roommate or more if you have a house and your landlord is cool with it (definitely make sure of that first because not a lot of them are, but it's worth it to ask). Eat/prepare food and coffee at home. Get a much cheaper phone plan like pre-pay and just use wifi or get a pocket wifi if you need to (it'll still be cheaper). Get a bicycle to eliminate all of your transportation costs, aside from long trips and bike repairs (I've had to replace my tires a couple of times). Since you'll be biking more, you could ditch the gym membership, but it's up to you. As for Netflix, I dunno if Japan has the different tiered packages like America, but if so, then just get the HD one to save a couple extra bucks a month. There's definitely more ways to save than what I listed, but this is just me going through Paolo's budget line items at 05:03.
The pocket wifi is great. It's less than 4000yen for unlimited wifi. Just get the worst phone plan possible with 0 internet just so you can have a phone number. After that, just get a pocket wifi + power bank and you're set for life. You won't use your actual SIM card that much anyway. Everyone uses Line these days so i've never seen my friends try to actually call someone on their phone number unless it's for work or something like that.
I starting watching your videos an year before and really admire your efforts for making such amazing yet meaningful videos. I truly love japan. Sending best wishes to you and your family , Paolo.💗

After that, just get a pocket wifi + power bank and you're set for life. You won't use your actual SIM card that much anyway.
