I live in Uptown and love it. I moved here from England two months before this video was posted. It has changed for the best and worst since then, depending on your economic outlook. I still live here with my family, with no plans for moving away.
The 80's also. I'm from the southside and use to go party at the Riv and had friends who lived there and other parts of the Northside. I use to hang in every part of the city. I never stayed in my neighborhood.
If be poppin you mean bullets sure. Place was a shiet hole. The Magnolia street goons would always be on the block looking to start shiet and then you had homeless and prostitutes everywhere. It's much better now.
Spent my first ten years in uptown. It was diverse bsvk in the 70s. Had the best teachers at brenaman elementary. We moved to Texas to escape gang violence and blizzards. Our first summer in Houston we experienced stifling heat and humidity hurricane and segregation in Houston. I remember growing up around Japanese Germans native Americans and various other immigrants.
I love that picture of Uptown (8:44) and I guess it's the Wilson "El" station with Downtown in the background in a sort of haze. How can I get that picture?
"If you wanna learn about the City of Chicago all you have to do is study uptown" This statement is pretty incorrect if you ask me there are so many other communities in the city of Chicago that have very different demographics you can't just learn everything by one neighborhood or one area that is apart of a bigger city. Had to say that it has bothered me a little bit (This is coming from somebody who has lived in Chicago all of my life and has not only seen my own neighborhood but others as well). The problem that I have is that somebody were to say that is probably somebody that barely knows anything about Chicago and has never lived or been area the south, west, north, etc.
Same story of gentrification all around the city and all over the world. Support locally owned businesses and try to improve your community before investors and developers ruin your neighborhood like they did to Wicker Park, Bucktown, Logan Square, Lakeview, etc.
Lo Co its a nice area kinda of pathetic and makes no sence for people to be gang banging up there instead of trying to get a good job or make something good of yourself
As a former resident of uptown I can tell you this documentary is not completely accurate. Cornerstone and other social service agencies like them do little to actually help the problem of homelessness long-term. Ultimately these agencies are nothing more than glorified welfare scams for the owners. When I lived in uptown most of the business owners acted like they were doing the customers a favor by taking their money, everyone was rude and angry constantly. Buildings in uptown are mostly overpriced and in poor condition. There are some nice people in uptown but unfortunately the bad people outnumbered the good. If the city of Chicago really wants to improve the uptown community they should bulldoze it into the lake and start over again. I am truly glad I moved out of the neighborhood.
Sad to say but gentrification is taking hold! Uptown has and is becoming more white and very Gay! Neither of these things are bad BUT is is making the hood abit less AFFORDABLE!

Good concise overview - thanks all.
I miss the old days and Uptown before gentrification
Me too.
So what’s wrong with gentrification it’s improving things and making them look better
@@Savagesaiyan2318 whiter.
