Thanks for the info. It's been a while since I had to use the charts. You're right, the speed square and calculator has taken over a lot of these functions. Kinda like the abacus vs. calculator.

You are a inspiration!! I'm not as young as 99% of the people in the woodworking/cnc community. Most people my age say "cnc isn't woodworking" or "it takes nothing to push a button"!! Well you can hopefully attract woodworkers with fantastic videos like this and hopefully inspire them to try the cnc part of the hobby.

I also had a recent fight with a table saw.........my left forefinger paid the price. Took 1/4 inch of bone off the end. First accident ever after 50+ years of operating power tools.

Lots of good stuff here. I always assumed that my square was in fact square when I bought it - trusting the manufacturer to deliver a quality product. The tips on tuning it were also great. The various charts were sometimes a bit confusing, but if I took a bit of time and watched them a few times it would probably make more sense. My lack of understanding what you were explaining is not your problem; it's mine. Blessings to you sir, and thanks for sharing this valuable information about a simple, but important tool in the workshop.

Really awesome. Thank you... I'm in process of digging post holes for one side of a deck. Would love to see how to set those posts on a 90 degree angle using the square, but u covered that pretty much.
I only covered part of it using the framing square. If you are aware of the 3,4,5 rule then use that to get it square.
Paw Paw’s WorkShop , thank you. I've only recently become aware of it on TH-cam. Luckily, the foundation running perpendicular and past the deck, so I may use a laser w/90 degree lasers and the foundation or just the deck itself to line up the new posts.
Oddly enough you will find that the laser may be difficult to set up. Use the 3,4,5 method. You can also double the number to get a more accurate measurement to get you corner square. If you have room measure from the corner out 6, and again from the corner 8. With those two point marked on each leg get a helper and connect the dots. You need 10 to be square. Very easy and works perfectly every time.

The mark along the side is 1/2 of the hypotenuse. Then cut a 45 degree line across the corner. which will make even side for an octagon.
had a square for ever, my Dads. trying to figure out how some of it works. my square shows at the 39/39 mark... 55.16 I know my square if way old tho
That is the brace scale. The 55.16 would be the length of the brace it the two sides were 39
I know that a lot of table saws set up differently, I have a ShopSmith, but a general setup routine for table saws would be informative. How about the smaller squares or the triangle square?

I think the cnc left a lot people out in the cold. Myself included most people do not have access to these type machines
The cost and the quality of these CNC machines have come down greatly. It is increasingly easier to get one of these machines. It is a great hobby and potentially a money making opportunity. Many people have turned their hobby into a business with the CNC machine at the center point.
Operating a CNC machine is definitely a skill. I don't consider it a wood working skill. My wife and I have bread machine and make our own bread. It doesn't make us better bakers. The two skills are different.
I do believe it is still woodworking. You have to know wood types, hardness, grain considerations and many other factors. Not to mention the finishing. I do believe it takes an additional skill in that you must have computer skills. But consider this, technology is coming to many tools. You can not get computer controlled table saws, routers and other tools. As technology evolves so will the tools. Our history proves this everyday.

Thanks for the great video. Do you know if you can use a framing square to determine the body and leg measurements to scribe a given angle? Say I want to produce a 27 degree line. I only want to use tools available in the mid 1800s. Would I have a reference book? Or could I do it with the charts on the square? Thanks for the help!
Yes, you can use just the framing square. You just have to understand some basic such as a 12:12 pitch is a 45 degree angle and a 6:12 pitch would be a 22.5 degree angle and so on.

One of the most important and overlooked classes in school back in my day. Fortunately I didn't overlook them although I didn't understand their future use. Nor did I overlook other sciences...chemistry, physics, etc. Unbelievable how all of those topics have come into play in my life.

If you have to do this to your tools then buy more higher grade tool, the cheap tools are always made with poor metal. And people bang up their tools and knock them out of alignment
