      One is carried before the Queen when she opens parliament every year. Only Kings wear a cap. A Queen Regnant wears a Diadem instead. At the coronation ceremony a King wears the cap prior to the anointing after which it is carried.

      @@mscott3918 I don't understand how it could be the underlying for a crown. There's a large animal depicted on the top. Is that the crown? Why are there gaping holes in the mouth area of the animal? What is missing? I guess I just don't understand it. Perhaps watching this without any knowledge of the Black Prince might be why I don't understand it. It's quite a marvelous piece of history. It must have been very commanding when it was in it's pristine original shape.

      @@pamelahicks517 I know this is kind of late but it is theorized that the first use for a cap of maintenance was to wear under a crown, more or less like a padding to make it more comfortable. The example seen here was not for that purpose, it was worn as the crest for the prince's tournament helm, hence it's size and the fact that there isn't really a place for a crown to go. As for what was originally inside the mouth of the lion I'm not entirely sure but I think it is likely that it was simply made to look like the inside of a mouth but the pieces have either been lost or rotted away over the centuries it was left hanging above his tomb. They have made a reconstruction of an extremely similar cap and tourny helm that was hung above Henry V's tomb that you can see if you look up the video "Henry V's jousting helm reproduced, Part 1 - Capwell & Easton" from scholagladiatoria if you are interested in how it might have looked originally.

    I like to think you could pull on the tail, and perhaps the dog barked or it's tongue came out....or something. I've never seen this in the UK, but some German designs of this type, the tail was meant to be manipulated, sometimes it would even make a head shake.

    • @boydgrandy5769
      @boydgrandy5769 ปีที่แล้ว

      It's not a dog. It's a heraldic leopard. That cap was worn over the Prince's Great Helm in tournaments and became part of his funerary achievements displayed over his guilt copper effigy
      My guess is that, if you ever thought to pull on Edward's tail. there would have been consequence. Still would be.

      it was made for his funeral. If you search up 'black prince funeral achievements' you will see it is the cap that sat on top of his battle great helm. the lion is a symbol of english kings and I assume it would have identified him in battle, not that he would have necessarily worn it in battle. I assume that the helmet is still underneath but is wrapped in that white sheet for protection.
