I liked that you shared, to a greater depth than usual, the fears that crossed your mind along the way. Last year I abandoned a planned run down the Petawawa when the river was already super high and the forecast was calling for an insane amount of additional rain the next day. Ended up paddling upstream back to launch in the dark.
I was a bit surprised that you didn't consider the option of just camping out overnight and then finishing up in the morning.

I like the camera angles. Behind and to the side you're paddling on is epic while going through rapids. Also the slo-mo, you did that right, didn't slow it down too much but just enough to capture the the intensity without losing it in the slo-mo

This video is a raw and powerful example of what paddling sport can be. Springtime - high and cold water. Great angles from the rear over shoulder perspective. Sometimes you just don't know how long a run will take because the guidebooks are wrong or were never written. Some of those rapids were near class 4 in my book. Keeping a positive attitude and smashing out the route with finesse when most would fold. Great stuff Jim stay confident out there!

I think that you are right about your supernova being pushed by waves -- it likes to have a good load to give it some momentum when hitting waves. I would say it is a whitewater tripper rather than just a whitewater play boat. Used mine on a solo of the Colounge and Noire and it ate most rapids for breakfast.

After taking off the river just at dusk twice, my rule was no unknown rivers without anyone that knew the river after 9 pm. Saved my bacon. I was paddling down a small class IV river with two friends. Another friend caught up to us and paddled ahead to the take out. When we got here, he said, what are you going to paddle now. We had planned a short paddle down a nearby river. One of my friends asked, what else is running. He mentioned a class V river we had heard of, but never paddled, my two friends said lets go there. So we were off. Dropped off a couple of cars at the take out and drove to the put in. The put in was right above a 5' ledge. I asked, what level is this. I don't know, never run this before. That was it. I told them I would wait at the take out for them. Both my friends ended up walking off the river. One had been chased by a bull and the other walked off to a farm house and got a ride to the takeout. The next day we ended up walking in to get the two kayaks. One of the guys had injured his arm and couldn't paddle, so I paddled his kayak out. We spent the next week paddling various rivers successfully and having fun.

Loved this video. Cutting it close for sure. Question, why not make it over two days? Pack a light overnight setup - tarp, pad, bag, minimal freeze dried food etc. Setting up on that road would be perfect and you could take more time scouting and just enjoying it without stressing about the dark. But hey, you are out there doing it and I'm pecking at a keyboard. Kudos for getting out there and bringing it.
