I literally searched out for a review like this because I felt like I was going crazy because of how many people loved it and I much I found it unbearable. I thought the characters were so superficial and there were no connections to their actions and their motives. I literally just read it and it was so many things that were forgettable I forgot that you mentioned in this video. Thank you so much!!!
Earlier today I saw a tiktok marketing this book and I've been looking for reviews all day to see if it's what I thought it was gonna be like. Needless to say my expectations were met (tiktok book recommendations are pretty bottom of the barrel imo). This is great thank you I'm glad that you spoiled too lol.
I feel so validated after watching your video (also thought the random Anna Karenina spoiler was so unnecessary)! One thing that really bothered me about this book is how much of the story feels unnaturally pieced together. The characters are inserted into the story but don't really feel like a part of the world. The events of the story feel separate from the characters, and don't seem to really influence the characters themselves. I noticed that when you read the excerpt about Misha threatening/assaulting Ryen with the scissors aloud, the writing sounded extremely clunky, like there was a missing sentence or two. I have a theory that this story started as some kind of High School AU fanfiction that managed to fly under the radar. Mainly because it feels like a story that has been cut-and-pasted together from another source, though I could be reading too much between the lines.
I enjoyed the first 5 chapters and then it went down hill. I thought the idea of pen pals was cute, but I don't really like the characters. Misha is a hypocrite who hates that Ryne is faking her personality while he's roaming around here with a fake identity. At the beginning the author made Misha's sister death seem significant, but as we progress with the story Misha acts as if it never happened and only thinks of banging Ryen. The characters feel like objects with some dialogue since I couldn't sense any feelings or depth to them.
God exactly! When I was looking for opinions on such a book, everyone farted flowers and this book is my biggest shopping mistake. The characters are so childish and just plain stupid. The girl hasn't changed in so many years and I think people who haven't changed even a bit for the better in about 8 years are toxic. The spicy scenes are unrealistic and he manipulates her in most of them. I don't understand how anyone can like it
Well at least they didn´t fall into the trope of "Nerdy Girl thats just a little to weird and awkward but also is like ridiculously beautiful only she is the one person in the world that doesn´t know it" Or the "Tomboy girl that by the end uses like a dress and make up for the first time showing the rest of the people that she could be conventionaly attractive is she wanted to just to prove that she can get the dreamboat guy from the cheerleader captain"
I just got done with this today and I could not agree more with your sentiments. I wrote you a comment that was like 3 or 4 paragraphs long detailing my thoughts but honestly it would have taken up way too much of your time and since we're mostly in agreement there really wasn't any point. I'll be making a video on it probably next week so if you're interested you can see my thoughts there. I just hated this book and the view of masculinity was so infuriating. Misha is everything that i don't want to be as a man. Great review my friend. I'm glad I'm not the only one who felt this way.
Thank you for taking the time to write this! It's definitely a shared sentiment that this book doesn't have the best representation in any way. Hope to see the video then!
I couldn’t finish this book. But that classroom scene pissed me off. I get that they’re teenagers, and yea English does suck. But your telling me Ryely (idc I spelled her name wrong.) couldn’t get an audiobook and then get the book from the library?! Also didn’t like how she hinted at the teacher being pro grooming . Lolita is about a deeply disturbed man. A man that comes into an innocent girls life, marries her mom to get closer to said child, goes after the child once the mom has died, and then just messes up her life. He is an untrustworthy narrator because he sees there relationship as one of love. When in no way shape or form is it any of that. And this not real character would know that if she took the time to read the book. Watch a video about someone talking about it, buy the audiobook, or go on spark notes?! I call bull.
Ugh I’m so glad I’m not the only one who didn’t like it. I wanted to like it so bad. I read the fall away series by Penelope and loved it so I had high hopes for this one and was let down. I was ready to get it over with to be honest. I was looking forward to reading some of her other books but idk now .
I don't even know why I'm watching this, and I certainly don't know if your review is an accurate reflection of the book. What I do know is that when you described the setup where the girl is the idiot cheerleader that she hates I thought "Oh, so actually this is a really good story." But when you describe all the other characters I just think "Oh no..."
As a person who likes this book, I think you don't need to like how Misha and Rayn are in the start of the book, it's all about the character development of them imo
So basically he's mad because she doesn't fit the perfect picture of her that he created in his head... Awesome

It's interesting watching this video after watching someone else saying that this is one of their favorite books.
I definitely appreciate you taking this one for the team…this sounds like quite the crazy ride!

Misha and Ryan are both horrible people.

Everything u said is so accurate
I am loving your channel and videos! Thanks for sharing this Mari.
thank you Luther!! this warms my heart c:
Well, this book was a ride and I didn't even read it (I've never watched euphoria but it feels exactly like something out of that show.)
NATE JACOBS LEVELS OF TOXICITY
Misha seems like the final boss of the Nice Guys™️
Like it’s obviously bad Ryan is a bully but I don’t think that gives him the right to abuse her???
right??? especially while hiding his identity

I am your biggest fan
Wait until you read credence
The book would be so much better if it was slow paced idk the ending was kinda underwhelming.
